Yep yep.

Put some thought into character creation too, you can't just take a 2 in Charisma or Intelligence or anything really to boost up your other stats. Be careful in combat and don't forget that you can do Targeted Shots by clicking the little button to the bottom right of your weapon. Those are highly helpful.

Also, save a lot. If you think you're saving enough, save more.

Like MrSmiley said: your character is one of the most important aspects in Fallout, give it some thought. Firstly picture an overall type of character: thief, diplomat/educated, brawler, melee/gun fighter, sniper or a mix of these types for example then balance out your: stats, traits, skills, tags, etc. most suitable for this type character. Once you made a choice there's no turning back!

Actually Fallout is based on 3 main characters: charisma boy/girl, combat boy/girl and stealth boy/girl.

*Edit* The outside world is harsh! Always good to have a few medium fighting skills. But that's just my opinion, I never completed FO1 as a fully diplomatic/scientific character to be honest coz there aren't that many companions to help as in FO2, some fights are unavoidable and brutal. I could be wrong however, it's been a while since I've played the first one.

The best piece of advice I have is this:

Read the manual!

The second best piece of advice is:

Don't read online help guides. (If they don't contain spoilers they are probably not worth reading; wait until you've played it through a time or two before looking at the help guides)

For Character Creation I would suggest going to the part of the manual that describes the perks, since there is a limit to how many you get pick the few that you really want and make sure that your character will have the stats to qualify for them.

Great advice right there. It svcks to be just a point off from getting the Perk you want.

Save regularly. Very Regularly.

Specialise in a few skills to begin with, and start spreading out come level 5.

Do a combat tank type PC first ~the game gets harder when these skills are lower ~but its worth the replay after you get comfortable with the game.

Have a good small gun's skill. That's the first and foremost class of gun you'll ever see. Ignore the patience that other faction's offer and piss them off right off the bat is a VERY BAD idea.

When buying/selling things, be sure to grab the right amount of caps from the merchant's inventory because its not an automatic transition. First time I tried selling something to Seth I did that wrong and thought "Where the hell's my money!?"
