Here are a few recommendations to consider:

- Save often
- Don't feel like you need to do the Main Quest immediately
- Consider talking to Moira at Craterside Supply about helping her. That quest line provides a great focus to start the game
- Focus on one kill skill. Small guns is probably easiest. Keep in mind you don't need to get it to 100 and there is a bobblehead for each skill that increases it by 10
- Repair is a very important skill
- lockpick can be a very useful and profitable skill
- Scrounge any ammo you can. Particularly at low levels
- Keep your weapon fully loaded and in good repair
- Go to Rivet City early on and the the intelligence bobble head, that will help increase the rate at which you gain skills
- Take the Educated perk early on for more skills (though some would say there are plenty of skill points in the game, I think it's nice to get them early and it's helpful for a first playthrough
- If you go into Vault 106 don't close the door after you enter
- Save often

Never underestimate the value of a well placed land mine.

- Save often

I would like to add to Savlian's excellent advice with this: save in multiple save slots. Never rely on only one save. You can never save often enough. Save before making big decisions in case you change your mind later. Save, save, save and then save some more. You can always delete extra saves if you need to make room on your hard drive.

Another tip: When you meet a guy named Gob, be nice to him. He'll give you a discount when you trade with him.

let me just add a couple things to this list

-Do Not Fast Travel take in the scenery, and explore every inch of the Wasteland, you really miss out on stuff when you fast travel
-Don't use Online Guides or a Strategy guide for that matter, if your stuck or lost, stop and think, don't ruin your game experience
-Live with your choices, don't reload a save game cause you screwed up
-Oh and did someone mention to save often???

Don't weigh yourself down collecting empty bottles, forks/plates/coffee cups/clipboards...bottlecaps are money and bobby pins open locks.

Don't ask people on this forum about the game, best tip.

Play it anyway you want to for the first time, it's always the most fun, but don't rush the main quest, it is pretty good, but there is tons of other stuff to do that's not part of the main quest.

Some things I enjoy doing even after many playthroughs

Don't fast travel

Don't let it a be a walk in the part, don't keep spamming stimpacks to give you godmore(possible)

Don't reload if you think you've done something wrong, you can "fix" it in the next playthrough.

Peace.

Adding to the other wise voices here:

There are three karma routes (though it is ridiculously easy to switch karma at any time), so there are at least three play-throughs for you here.

SAVE OFTEN.

Yeh this is true, but I hope it doesn't harm to suggest collecting scrap metal, pre-war books and sugar bombs for bonus caps. I sold or ate all of mine before I realised they were worth a lot more to the right person(s), I wouldn't have minded that tip when I first played :)

There's nothing wrong with doing that at the start of the game. It does get redundant quickly though.

When traveling out in the capital wasteland be careful of random enemies. When you got to higher levels you'll come across some hard creatures and have to be prepared or you'll die real quick.

At the beginning of the game everything helps. I used to clear out Springvale Elementary of everything that had the slightest value just to get my character started.

Yes its better you find out for yourself, but here's a tip. Play on your own pace, observe and you know its the Capital wasteland out there so the bottom line is, learn to survive.
