Any tricks for farming wood?

Post » Wed Jan 13, 2016 4:14 am

Wood is the one resource I need the most, I am building up settlements and have 3 right now at max settlers. I have 3 more I want to do, but wood and concrete are a must. Cement I can clone, what about farming wood?

Wood is a bit hard to get from loot, easiest is to cut down all the forests on the settlements even if you don't need it on that settlement.

you might want to use more metal as it can be gained from weapons and metal armor. Weapon with wooden details drop one wood too.

You can break up weapon on crafting stations at various raider bases.

Else its not very expensive to buy.

If you have enough caps, you can buy wood shipment from Moe (100) at Diamond City Market, Green at Graygarden and Connie at Abernathy Farm sells 50 wood shipment.

Breaking down items, scrapping trees.

Basically, build Purified water farm to gather enough cap then buy shipments of wood from merchants, maybe wood items if they sell any.

Yea, lately I have been buying wood more often (I've unlocked all settlements and scrapped all the trees. My Spectacle Island fortress used a ton of wood lol).

Some settlements have a ton of trees you can scrap, like Spectacle Island. Use a Ghoul Settler to establish a supply line to the Island (due to some radiation in the water). You will get more and more wood, the more settlements you open up. Scrap all the trees you find and build supply lines.

Note that at this time you run out you should be able to have build more than 10 water purifiers giving you more than 100 purified water each day / visit and should not have problems buying wood.

Oh I have caps coming out of my ears, so buying wood is no issue for me. :) And I don't use Purified Water as currency, I use pre-war money and/or ammo types that I don't use.

Scavenger settlers seem to "create" resources that players can't access. With one or two scavenging benches at each settlement -though I don't actually know if they stack - WITH settlers assigned to them (that took me WAY too long to figure out) wood has never been an issue for me.

What do you mean by clone? The duplication glitch? If so, why not just use it on wood?

There's a PC mod that lets you actually plant trees and then harvest wood (in increments of, I think, 15, 30, and 60 depending on which version of the mod you use). I've planted the trees but have not yet been back to harvest the wood so I cannot say with certainty that it works but if it does, Spectacle Island is about to become Endor.

Several of the weapons yield wood when broken down too, though not all of the ones that ostensibly should yield some.

The yields are completely out of whack. A pencil yields "1" wood, and a baseball bat yields maybe "4."

A typical pencil weighs 6 to 10 g (we'll say "8" on average), and your average baseball bat weighs 880 g.

If 8g of pencil = 1 "unit" of wood, then 880g of bat should = 110 units of wood.

A sapling should probably yield 200 to 800 "units" of wood and large tree should probably yield 2000 even as high as 5000.

Will be fun to "fix" this stuff in the GECK once it is out ;) Might not make the game "fun" but I"m going to try it.

Also, a piece of the "cheaper" wall uses up "7" wood (along with about "3" steel). So you can build a wall with SEVEN pencils, or two baseball bats!?

The obvious issue here is that, many of the building components need to have different units: logs, planks, boards, scraps, etc. It should pretty much be impossible to turn any "smaller" unit of wood into a larger unit: you cannot "make" a board using 100 pencils, it just doesn't work that way . . . but now we are getting into an overhaul of the entire loot/crafting/inventory/weights/building system, and I may or may not go there.

Wood I s a very frustrating resource to have enough of once you start getting into building hardcoe. I have scrapped every tree from every settlement along with anything junk that contains wood.......and I still find myself going to diamond city, buying a shipment of 100 wood.......wait 48 hours on a stool..........rinse and repeat -_-

But yet you can buy 4 shipments of steel at a time? WTH?

Have you tried the scavenging settler strategy? My Prime toon has somewhere around two dozen settlements and there is enough wood coming in on its own that I don't even pay attention to it at all. Last time I happened to take notice of it, it was somewhere around 3,000 units. I have not been hoarding it, either, as most of my settlements are fully walled. But even on the settlements that I've chosen to ignore, one of the two or three "founding" settlers is going to be assigned to a scavenging bench, contributing to the Empire.

I have at least 1 scavenging station in almost all towns and some have about 4 to 6. Never seems to increase much?
