So any ways to make Fallout 3 harder

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:33 pm

Ok basically I'm thinking about restarting a file on Fallout 3 however I don't want to be a broken character I want to have a little bit of a challenge. Any ideas on what I could do like low stats, don't take certain perks etc.

I've now got a basic idea of how the special rules for my file are going to be.

Can’t select Almost Perfect, Grim Reaper Sprint, Educated, or Comprehension
You can’t have an armor that’s over 15 DR
Leather Armor is an exception to the rule the Wanderer’s Armor does not count.
Raider Armor can be used
Combat Armor can’t be used and that includes both versions the regular version and the Talon Company version.
Intelligence can’t be higher then 5
No Power Armor of any kind as its over 15 DR
The Chinese Stealth Armor can’t be used as it makes the game too easy.
The Fatman can’t be used and neither can the Missile Launcher
The Tesla Cannon can’t be used and neither can the Gauss Rifle
Plasma Grenades can’t be used.
Intense Training Can’t be used
Bobble heads can be used
The Lincoln Repeater needs to be sold to either Leroy, Hamlin or Abraham Washington
The Alien Blaster, Tri beam Laser Rifle, Metal Blaster and the Fire Lance can’t be used.
Hats can’t be worn but Sunglasses can be worn the Lucky Shades don’t count.
No Fast Travel

download FWE (mod). If you're just going for self-restrictions then:

--only carry 5-10 stimpacks

--no fast travel

--keep all skills at no higher then 75

--Only carry two weapons (three including a hand-gun)

--No selling ammo (since it's easy to find and sells for alot)

--Keep low endurance for low HP

--Stay away from end game OP weapons like gattling lasers.

--ONLY use "Quick save states" and never load the file unless you die.
----Only save once an hour, or every half hour.

--Anything else you can think of.

Its a shame I don't have it for PC but some of those are good ideas. The Fast Travel one is something I'm seriously considering.

When I replay through i'm (luckily enough) using FWE which has alot of it's own options. However, I am going with no fast travel, and FWE makes it so I need to eat and drink, take and give more damage etc. Basically, self-restriction on anything that makes the game less realistic. Ammo in real life has weight, so FWE adds this, but for yourself, just limit the amount of ammo you'll allow yourself to carry. I sat down for hours debating everything I wanted for my own harder playthrough.

Avoid high-end armour. Stick to something like a merc grunt or merc charmer outfit, or even just a pre-war suit. Helps keep fights that little bit more dangerous.

Something I've thought about but not got round to doing yet: no healing from stimpaks, only sleeping, food/water or a trip to a doctor. And no buying the My First Infirmary or the Chemistry Set from Moira.

I heard using only big guns is really difficult. Or try using anything but energy weps and small guns.

LOL! My big guns only character is like the poster child for OP characters. It is harder the first few levels as it is hard to find a big gun to use, but after that it is easy. Also you can't be a sneak and snipe character and actually have to get shot a lot. That doesn't hurt too much with a 85 DR LOL.

How about going without armor entirely? Be the "Naked Wanderer" LOL

Or maybe just wear a Business suit?

Maybe you could go with unarmed skill and Explosives for your only means of offense, and do not sneak and instead charge into battle and bash people's heads in with a power fist

Any of the combat based skills make the game easier. Don't choose them. Go for a Speech/Barter/Sneak/Medicine/Repair/Science combo. Make sure it's on very hard. Do not fast travel. Try not to have a high strength or endurance. Do not take Grim Reapers Sprint. Focus on lady killer/ swift learner/ child at heart/ scoundrel/ bloody mess/ fortune finder/ impartial mediation/ rad resistance/ night person/ here and now/ pyromaniac/ swift runner/ chemist/ master trader/ tag/ chem rest./ computer whiz/ infiltrator/ explorer.

Oh and if you die, DELETE EVERYTHING. Good Luck.

If you are playing on pc then there's alot of mods for that, like improving enemy npc's AI etc.

Or you can make yourself a challenge, full good armor, some pieces of stimpaks, two handed weapon with limited ammo, so you can roam around to the deathclaw sanctuary or collect deathclaw corpses.

Back then i dont use fast travelling, and i dont use maps with one of my characters.

Copied and pasted:

Here are some of my play restrictions, to name a few:

1. No fast-travel
2. Ammo has weight
3. One big gun, one mid-range weapon, one "up close and personal" weapon, some nades, couple of mines.
4. 5 stims, two radaways, two radx
5. You can pop one stim only, during combat, and no spamming of any health items.
6. No Educated, Comprehension, Grim Reaper's, Light Step, Finesse, etc : basically any perk that makes you too powerful.
7. You cannot carry ammo for a weapon you are not carrying. Honestly, you cannot carry 40 missiles. You can carry one, but since this is all fiction, I say you can carry two.
8. No sleeping in the wastes unless you have a companion.
9. I have to go to the doctor to cure radiation poisoning and crippled limbs. Sometimes meaning that I must walk my crippled ass all over the Wasteland looking for a doctor.
10. Every transaction must equal zero. Which means that I am basically trading, instead of selling. My barter is unchanged from the beginning = 13 for skill.
11. I can make money by scavenging, finding Quantums, and selling sugar bombs.
12. You cannot repair unless you are standing next to a workbench. You cannot be over-encumbered, ever. If you can't carry it, dump it.
13. If a weapon breaks on you out in the wastes, you must drop it, no matter what it is.
14. My character has been addicted to alcohol since level 4 or so.

This is my second character played this way. It's a lot of fun. However, I am finding that even with these restrictions, I still kick serious butt at level 30. The early levels for these rules, from level 2 to about level 15, is brutal. So I think in future characters, having one maxed kill skill is a bad idea. Just... thinking out loud.

I've got another one for you to consider:

You are not allowed to add skill points, to skills you did not use in the previous level.

Good ideas but I always tried to not fast travel anyways lol because I tried to run into as many random events as I could lol. It began to be really boring until I finally got the Firelance event thingy lol. :flamethrower:
