Any word on what server rules will/won't be allowed?

I've been following Brink's development for quite some time now, and I must say I'm really liking how it's shaping up so far. What caught my attention in particular was Splash Damage's recent discussion on fixing unfun aspects in shooters (unavoidable one-hit kills and grenade spam for instance). This got me thinking about one fairly long-running trend which a large audience can agree has outstayed its welcome; specifically, stupid server rules.

I'm not talking things like "No spawn-camping or grenade launcher-spamming please", I'm talking about the FPS equivalent of Smash Bros. and its wretched "Final Destination, Fox only, no items!" crowd. I'm talking about servers forcibly removing key game mechanics in the name of some mistaken idea of "tactical" play ("CROUCH ONLY, IRON SIGHTS ONLY, NO MELEE, NO RUNNING, NO JUMPING, STAND STILL FOR 3 SECONDS = BAN DERP"), or worse, trying to force every single team-based gametype into yet another mindless deathmatch for no reason and with not a single warning. You ever been kicked from a CTF server for grabbing a flag? Kicked from a Control Point server for standing on one of the titular control points? Kicked out of Search & Destroy for sticking a bomb down by one of the big objective targets? I have - and it's just the sort of crap that makes me wonder how these so-called "hardcoe fans" can be so bloody stupid as to make the bots look like a genuinely pleasant alternative.

Which brings me to ask, will there be official guidelines on what server rules can and can't be allowed when Brink goes live? From the top of my head, I know that Bad Company 2 has rules of conduct asking that admins actually list in both their server title and the in-game console what mods they have, and forbidding them from removing game features outright from ranked servers (take that, ya stupid "We don't want vehicles in huge open vehicle warfare maps!" crowd). I do hope that Brink will offer something similar, because if I get kicked/banned from a server for picking a Medic and saving a teammate from getting killed, there WILL be hospitalized cabbages.

We don't know much in particular, but the http://www.fragworld.org/frag/brink/the-fragworld-brink-compendium.html has some information about it.

For example there is a server-side setting for if VoIP is enabled.
Friendly Fire is also a server-side setting.

I agree with you, though, that "competitive" server-rules are stupid ("Final Destination" came up on this forum once already).

Brink will most likely have servers with the settings you are talking about, since many people like them. Fortunately, you (or anyone else) doesn't have to play on those servers. Just find another server with the settings you like.

When well over half the servers you get on a list supposedly don't have any major rules enforced yet you still get kicked anyway for reasons that never make any sense, it isn't quite as simple as you make it sound.

Particularly lazy/inept admins take to adding auto-kick scripts to their servers, which kick or ban suspects for using grenades, underslung weapon attachments, melee weapons, iron sights, the jump button, and so on.

Yes. It is that simple. I have well over 1000hr.s playing RTCW and W:ET - I played them both competitively and on pub servers, and not once, I have ever been kicked for behaving or doing something that conflicted with the server settings or the admin. I had my favorites I frequented and would play on other servers as well, without a problem. This goes for games like TF2, Quake 3 and UT as well.

The problem may not be the servers/admin - it may be you.

Yes. You could also see a couple of settings before you join a server (Weapon restrictions, FF, ...). You could also see the mod that the server used, which mostly gave a good indication how the game would play.

Admins can be retarted though. I can't count the times I got kicked in W:ET because I was "Aimbotting or wallhacking". Most people didn't even know how leaning worked there.

When talking about (dedicated) servers, you can (usually) safely assume it's PC-talk.

IMO it should be up to the clan/community/player running the server to decide what rules gives.
After all it their/his money. If you don't like the rules, move on to another server.

If anything is disappointing, it's lack of variation from server to server in the latest releases of AAA fsp games.
