Any working fixes for "shadow striping" yet?

Post » Sun Jun 23, 2013 6:31 pm

I've got all these lovely lighting mods going, but unfortunately every time I look around and try to take in the view I get http://i.imgur.com/tOBnDLB.jpg. That screen is with no mods by the way, but the effect doesn't go away when I add them(RCRN+ELFX), indeed it becomes more apparent because everything else looks so fantastic. I have all the shadow-related ini settings I can find;

Skyrim.ini

---

fSunShadowUpdateTime=0.0025
fSunUpdateThreshold=0.0025
fShadowBiasScale=0.6

Skyrimprefs.ini

---

iShadowMapResolution=4096
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096
fShadowBiasScale=0.1500
iShadowMaskQuarter=4
iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3
fShadowDistance=2500.0000

...am I missing any that might help with this issue? Or am I just reliant on waiting for updates to the lighting mods that find all the wee problem lights?

Try raising the blur shadow .ini line to 50 or 100, that also makes them go away from what I have tried :)

As far as I'm aware that mod only affects the specific areas listed, which are all interiors. I'll give those other ini settings a try, but when you say "blur shadow line" do you mean iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3 or something else?

Careful, one of the developers posted long ago that certain shadow settings in the ini should not be touched. I... don't remember which ones, but it was some of the large numbered ones, so just tread carefully and keep a backup of your ini.

Plus, sadly, shadows are a much deeper problem than the ini can handle. It'll require a project similar in scale to the Oblivion Graphics Extender before it gets fixed. Assuming Bethesda doesn't surprise us with a shadow fix later.

If your computer can handle http://www.enbdev.com/download_mod_tesskyrim.htm without too much of a performance drop, then I'd recommend testing that with a config file that only enables the portion related to detailed shadows. Not only has it fixed shadow striping for me, but it also makes shadows more accurate/detailed in terms of what casts them.

Hmm, was hoping to avoid ENB, but I suppose it might be possible if as you say I just use the shadow portion. Having never used it before, could I be cheeky and ask for a link to a config file? :P

Download the 0.178 version and extract only the d3d9.dll and enbseries.ini files from the WrapperVersion folder inside the archive and put them in the same folder as TESV.exe. Then open up enbseries.ini and change the [EFFECT] section to look like this:

[EFFECT]UseOriginalPostProcessing=trueUseOriginalObjectsProcessing=trueEnableBloom=falseEnableAdaptation=falseEnableDepthOfField=falseEnableAmbientOcclusion=falseEnableDetailedShadow=trueEnableSunRays=falseEnableSkyLighting=falseEnableImageBasedLighting=falseEnableReflection=falseEnableSoftParticles=falseEnableParticleLights=false

EDIT: Or you can do as MrJack suggests if you don't want DOF :smile:

It seems that ENB, in its 'raw' form (as it can be downloaded on its http://www.enbdev.com/index_en.htm) doesn't modify many things and has very few impact on performances. You may try to install it stand-alone, without any 'heavy load' preset.

Thanks I'll give that a bash.

I take it since I'm using RCRN, I'll also have to use the proxy dll feature by renaming the existing d3d9.dll as something like "d3d9_rcrn.dll" and pointing the ENB file to it?

Sorry for hijack, but if trying the above should one turn down the shadow settings in the Skyrim launcher and/or change the shadow settings in SkyrimPrefs.ini? Or does ENB "take over" this so it doesn't matter (I wonder the same about other ENB features as well)?

I haven't done any proper testing on that subject. Boris Vorontsov does state on his site that certain features in Skyrim have to be enabled for some of ENB's features (ambient occlusion and sky lighting, if I remember correctly) to work properly. I do not know how or if Skyrim's shadow settings affects ENB's Detailed Shadows feature.

Well, from having just tried it, it looks fantastic. No more striping, no apparent performance loss(between 55 and 60 FPS, just as I had before, it may go higher but I cap it to prevent issues with my monitor), and *touch wood* no stability issues. I could probably enable SSAO as well, but frankly it's not worth the framerate hit.

Can't thank you guys enough for this, for my system at least I think I've found the best possible balance of eyecandy vs performance for lighting with MrJack's suggestion, RCRN, and ELFX.

OK, thanks - I'll try it out.

Awesome. Seems like I should finally test out ENB myself.
