I have to argee with Povuholo, Planescape: Torment has one of the best stories in an rpg that I can think of, precisely because it doesn't involve some grand adventure to save the world. I wish more devs would take a page out of PST's book.

Thats good to hear it is a very fun game so far. I am playing a pure sorcerer, slash pyromancer, and having a blast so far.

I heard playing with magic is harder in Dark Souls than in Demon's Soul's? I dont remember why exactly, but kudos to you for going the tricky route.

I cannot wait to get my hands on those games... They're the kind of games you come across every now and then that are so extremely your style, you start to question The Matrix, thinking you may have actually made the games yourself in an alternate reality, or "glitch" as it were....... O.o

creating a conflict that doesnt center around a threat immediately relatable to every human is hard. anyone can see the problem of the world being threatened, whether its earth or nirn, which is why its so common a conflict. OP seems to just want to be able to participate in the world-saving without being a demigod of prophecy, which is more than fair. Oblivion's failed at that because it just made you second fiddle to the chosen one instead of having no chosen one at all. ironically morrowind is a batter example because its implied your just some shmuck playing along with a prophecy so everyone BELIEVES your the chosen one. to put it simply, he just wants to kill dragons and defeat alduin with his own skill and not because some god gave him a dragon's soul, and i agree. the TES games are inherently about prophecy, but there is no reason they all have to include a prisoner of indeterminate race and gender saving the world single-handedly; your involvement can be less obvious/direct/important and still be fun... more so, as it allows you more freedom in RP'ing.

Great post.

I can relate to that Kicenna.

I just think that more than one questline dealing with the ongoing events in the world from a different viewpoint would make a nice change.

To be named as 'the chosen one' straight off the bat usually means that nothing changes unless the player chooses to participate.I could be completely wring about this but it's what has happened in the past.

My answer was a simplilstic one and based completely on emotion and feelings about the question posed on this thread. I'm not as well-versed about the lore in the early games and didn't experience them so the "route" the TES games go has not become old to me. It may never do that because of the way I play. I play Fallout New Vegas too and there are multiple paths in that game, four actually, that one can choose but I always play Lawful Good Save The World (as I see it) because that's the one that makes me *feel* good. I completely understand the desire for another path though. I just don't enjoy them.

I never played Shivering Isles because I don't like Sheogorath. Maybe that DLC was Bethesda offering a different path to those who wanted one? I don't know because I didn't play it and I don't know how it could turn out. :) I know I want great writing and i'm hoping we get that in Skyrim. From what we've heard, I think it's going to be more difficult to make choices and find that Lawful Good path I like so much.

Zero focus on faith, slight increase in strength, slight increase in finess just so you can pick up basic weapons. Massive point investment in attunment massive point investment in intelligence. Find the first sorcerer trainer immediately under the starting open location at firlink shrine so you can double soul arrow, and purchase never heavy soul arrow. Try to make B line for the next trainer, so you can finish off your arsenal as soon as possible.

... Well not having played the game yet that all kind of just went over my head lol. Which is actually good in my opinion. If the system was easy enough to fully understand just by hearing someone talk about it briefly (like oh so many games I wont mention) it would be a bit of a downer. I think I sort of get the jist of it, but I'm glad I dont fully comprehend how it all works. Shows it has depth, which just makes me more excited for it :D

Play Dark Souls. Get your ass kicked. Let evil win.

Back OT: Don't play the hero then. Forget the MQ and do whatever else you want to do. ^_^

I'll probably do some main quests, and get carried away by some guild quests and side quests :D

I hate it too. Just let me be an average joe with powers instead of a "Chosen annointed one".

That poll is very biased. You asked if people are tired of the "save the world" story in video games. You didn't give an option in the poll for those that aren't.

I love both high, and dark fantasy, but I mean come on why do I got stop the nigh unkillable god monster, cant I just hunt dragons in peace?

Low fantasy is better....

Let me just put it this way USE A GUIDE to find the merchants. Not for the dungeon, but for the merchants as they are very well hidden, and in strange locations sometimes.

That is because I don't care about there opinion, nor do I take this topic very seriously.

Didn't vote because you don't know if the MQ will be boring or not.

The other major route a player-centric game can take if you're not a fan of player-saves-the-world plots is a completely character-centric plot, for instance Max Payne (a shooter in a RPG-Adventure thread, lol). The success of player-saves-the-world scenarios lie in their ability to be relate-able to nearly every player, providing world-needs-saving events drives players forwards. Now, failed implementations aside, they generally are a good medium for games, and I do like them. That being said, there needs to be variation, and providing a plot revolving around the character is an alternate (and quite excellent, if done well) way of providing excellent story and motivation while avoiding the "cliched" path of savior-of-the-world. :)

None of the poll options apply to me. I give you an "F" for Failure.

As long as there's unique characters and good dialogue, I'm okay with it. When will I start the main quest? I have (kind of) a plan...
1. Join a guild or two
2. Explore
3. Make friends (and enemies)
4. Explore
5. Stare at beautiful terrain for hours
6. More exploring
7. Then, I might do the main quest...
