I agree with the TC. It does get a bit trite to constantly be the Chosen One/The One/Neo/Keanu Reaves in nearly every single RPG ever created. Fact of the matter is most people are idealists at heart and want the outcome where everyone's happy and all the main characters survive.

I like plots that are more personal. Saving the world from absolute destruction is boring because you know exactly what is going to happen... the world is going to be saved by an anonymous figure. If there was some sort of existential conflict, relationship, or political confrontation that somehow leads into unsolicited world salvation then the story would be much more interesting. I prefer some mystery in my games.

That in itself is a rather over used plot formula, and its kind of everywhere you look these days. People arent satisfied with a plot until it has some pointless political pissing contest and some good old fashioned teenage drama element detailing some hellish 'emotional roller-coaster' the characters have to deal with before they get their quest on.

*Sigh* no such thing as originality anymore.

I was being polite and respectful of your opinion and this is how you respond?

kthxbye.

I found you to be one of the more patronizing, and hostile members lol. But don't leave none of this is meant to be taken seriously, and if your feathers got ruffled I do apologize.

I like the old dark fantasy things start out bad, and might just might barely get a little better. Your a man surviving against the odds in a world with a thousand nightmares just waiting to rip you apart.

I like the idea of a pressing danger facing the world.................... I just don't like the idea of the "chosen One" thing. I would actually prefer it if the situation was hopeless, and then kind of just resolves it self. While I watch if from the back ground doing much much more interesting things.

I agree with the sentiment, the whole save the world/chosen one thing is getting a little tired.

I also agree with you on the main quest.I'd like to see the world change around me because of conflicts happening around me and resolving themselves either way whether i took an active part in it or not.

I was hinting at this yesterday in my evil character plot post.

Thats the general though behind it, but in the end they always turn out rather seamy, and extremely reminiscent of the last 15 modern games/TV dramas you just sat through.

If they 'are' going to go the sob story route, it would be a nice change of pace to flick in some different elements. I seem to be becoming more and more aware of how most stories are simple rehash's of something previously done, whether that's because I'm getting more and more cynical with age, or I've just lived long enough to experience the rehashes and notice it, I dont know. But the ones that tend stand out from the crowed are the ones that have the ability to make you give a damn despite knowing that.

Stories like that seem to be a dieing breed, which is pretty sad. But I do have faith good plots and storytelling will always be around no matter how few and far between they may appear. Just something to think about I guess

Well that description I gave is actually the only part about fantasy stories I like. Kind of explains why I am addicted to dark souls right now despite it not having a plot.........

Oh absolutely not. With the sad state of the real world...in many ways, not all to be sure, it's a fun thing to save someone's world even if they aren't actual real people. We occasionally get to be heroes in real life but it's not easy. I enjoy it a lot.

Stories have been rehashed since before written language. Its always the same old song with a different tune for you to sing along! :disguise:

I hope the tune turns out to be a good.

You have good taste lol.

I'm saving up for that very game as we speak. Since I missed out on Demon's souls already, I'm not willing to let its spiritual successor slip me by.
I'm even getting a PS3 of ebay for those games alone.

Well I'll get to the main quests eventually, I just hope that it's not like OB and more like MW regarding how fast the quests go.
No I don't get sick of saving the world, if we get eaten by Alduin there will be no TES and no more games. :c I think.

Sadly.. I am too cheap to buy a console. I will have to make due without all of the high production value exclusive titles. :sadvaultboy:

I can relate to that Kicenna.

I just think that more than one questline dealing with the ongoing events in the world from a different viewpoint would make a nice change.

To be named as 'the chosen one' straight off the bat usually means that nothing changes unless the player chooses to participate.I could be completely wring about this but it's what has happened in the past.

More to it than you think dude...

I am probably gonna explain this incorrectly but...

There are these towers basically holding Mundus and Nirn together and keeping it from becoming unstable like the planes of Oblivion. (That's the theory).

Eternal Champion? Set the groundwork for the whole series of events and destroyed the Staff of Chaos, which I am pretty sure was a tower stone. The stone powers the towers or unlocks them or something. Not sure.

The Agent? Do I need to even mention anything more than the fact that he/she created a dragon break and caused the Warp in the West, let alone destroyed Numidium, the Brass Tower and it's stone the Mantella was destroyed as well.

The Nerevarine? He/she destroyed the Heart of Lorkhan, the stone of the Red Tower(Red Mountain). He/she also ended the power of the Tribunal causing the Ministry of Truth to fall and leave the weakened Dunmer open to invasion by the Nords, Orcs and Argonians.

The Champion of Cyrodiil? He helped cause the destruction of white-gold tower's stone the Amulet of Kings. He caused the Fighters, Mages, and Thieves guild to fall into disarray and become weakened. We do not even know the repurcussions of releasing Jyggalag back into the Realms of Oblivion. It could be catastrophic.

See a pattern? Your thoughts? The Throat of the World is guessed to be the next tower. I wonder what it's stone will be...what if it was you? Hmmm...nah I doubt it.

There is more to the story...someone more with more Lore Knowledge please correct any mistakes and misconceptions please?

The events of all the other games have led up too this.

Alduiin is a bigger threat then we are making out Mehrunes Dagon couldn't do anything too him, Alduiin will end everything if we don't stop him the concept is hard to grasp but Alduiin really is coming to wipe the slate clean this is more then just saving us from enslavement this is saving the entire world from being wiped completley from existence.

creating a conflict that doesnt center around a threat immediately relatable to every human is hard. anyone can see the problem of the world being threatened, whether its earth or nirn, which is why its so common a conflict. OP seems to just want to be able to participate in the world-saving without being a demigod of prophecy, which is more than fair. Oblivion's failed at that because it just made you second fiddle to the chosen one instead of having no chosen one at all. ironically morrowind is a batter example because its implied your just some shmuck playing along with a prophecy so everyone BELIEVES your the chosen one. to put it simply, he just wants to kill dragons and defeat alduin with his own skill and not because some god gave him a dragon's soul, and i agree. the TES games are inherently about prophecy, but there is no reason they all have to include a prisoner of indeterminate race and gender saving the world single-handedly; your involvement can be less obvious/direct/important and still be fun... more so, as it allows you more freedom in RP'ing.
