Anyone Actually Like Horses in Skyrim?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:27 pm

I don't use them for all the reasons listed. They have poor AI, they attack anything and get themselves killed, although they look pretty good imo their running animation just looks bad and they're also pretty useless and just a hassle since you have to dismount to fight anything (which they will then attack and get killed). I can get around much easier on foot so there's not much point especially considering I can simply fast travel or use carriages if getting somewhere faster is an issue.

I bought one as I try to avoid fast travel and figured they'd be useful for moving around quickly.

However, it is such a huge pain to have to get off them everytime I run into an enemy. They should have followed RDR and figured out a mechanic for horse combat. Anything so I don't have to get off the bloody thing for every Cat or Wolf that happens to be on the road.

A first person view would be nice. Also the jump is a little unresponsive and like being on foot you can't jump while sprinting. God only knows why cus I'm pretty sure Beth has no clue lol!

You can get your horse to jump? I'll have to try again--thought it must have been left out. Hate third person while riding--awkward at best.

They cost 1000 gold. I just fast travel a lot now. I like to explore on foot.

It's forced third person? REALLY?

Well I won't be using horses then.

I use them occasionally but I don't like them. Controls are bad and I just love when they rush in combat and get killed. That's 1,000 gold I'll never get back.

You can't ride in first person nor talk to anyone while riding, and you won't get robbed, talked to, etc while mounted.

I would use horses if you could attack from horseback. Somehow, the Huns and Native Americans could do it, but nobody in Skyrim.

When I was playing the game I used Shadowmere, she doesn't die (that I have seen), sadly I can't play anymore.

i would use them, if they would stop running away after i dismount to enter a city.

hell why are the stables so uselss? you can open the door to the stables, you can ride in, but can't dismount in there. uselessaward.

If I had a horse whistle (call horse to you), then I'd use Shadowmere quite a lot of the time. But usually when I'd like to ride somewhere, she's somewhere in the other end of the world, and I very rarely fasttravel.

I don't have anything against horses in general, and I use them moderately, but I don't like their AI or the enemy AI regarding them. 1. Horses should not attack hostile creatures on sight, only if they are attacked themselves, and 2. Enemies should not attack a horse if it is other, actually hostile creatures/characters around. Would make it so much better.

horses were actually better in oblivion. supposedly they werent supposed to be as "tank" like according to Todd but they feel just as cumbersome as oblivions, and on top of that they force you into third person view. most people play this game in first person why they did that is just baffling and stupid. i never fought with them so i cant comment on their AI but everyone else seems to be mad about it. there was a mod called cowardly horses or something that addressed that so PC players at least dont have to put up with it.

they really dropped the ball on the animations thing. i dont mind the smithing and crafting so much because i dont do it nearly as much as fighting and travelling but the forced kill cam and ruining horses with that awful view just killed it.

has anyone else seen an npc ride a horse like in oblivion. i remember imperial guards riding horses on the main roads and with the exception of a couple of nobles ive come across virtually noone uses horses.

I rarely use the horse.

For all reasons posted already. I just see no practical use for them in the game. If I want to roam around the country side I am usually gathering ingredients, if I get in a fight, I already have one companion getting in the way, don't need two.

Every time i get one i'm afraid it will die plus when im riding along a bandit will come, i will get off then he'll just attack more horse instead of me, thats like if you got in a fight with someone and they just run up and start hitting your car.

Since all you can do is ride them, I don't think they're that great. I really can't believe you can't fight in the saddle. Even something "low tech" like Mount & Blade (which I love) has combat on horse, and look at how small that file is compared to your "major" releases.

When I lost my horse I thought, "Well, there's a thousand gold down the drain."

Dont like and dont use them. Bethesda just cant get horses right in their TES games:D

I use horses for realistic fast travel. But I have to agree. Bethesda Game Studios always have some moronic way to screw them up.

If I want to travel I want to see the scenery, not get stuck watching the floor - the 3rd person camera could be OK if not pointing directly to the horse's ass!
There's also something strange with the horse walk animations, not natural.

This.

The only thing left to make them perfect:
- AI set not to attack enemies on sight (at least, not even caring for "advanced" stay follow command! :P)
- Simple storage, like the companions have.

Too difficult??

Way too slow, and can't sprint long enough. Utterly useless with fast travel.

I gave horses a chance for quite a while, since getting around by simply walking just wasn't worthwhile.

Problem is every time an enemy showed up, the horse would either go insane and try to kill it (and often end up dying) or run off to the ends of the earth.

It also didn't help that falls from modest heights are incredibly lethal to horses. 1,000 gold every few days to replace a horse that tried to kill a dragon or keeled over from stubbing its hoof just wasn't worth it.
