Not really, but my character has been on Solstheim for years now. I don麓t play so much nowadays but I still like to return to it all in the winter and go hunt rieklings again
Yes, twice. I made my own alternate start mod so that I could begin both games on Solstheim and spend the entire game there. Those two games were two of my favorites. They also traveled to nearby modded landmasses like Ald-Vendras, Solstheim Castle and LoKKen.
Neither character ever set foot on Vvardenfell. It was great.
I had one character who spent all but his first couple of days on the Morrowind Mainland (TR mod), who left the island as soon as he could procure sufficient Waterwalk trinkets, scrolls, and spells to make the crossing, and never returned to Vvardenfell. The idea of dealing with the higher-level content on Solstheim at Level 1 seems daunting.
Questing might get deadly pretty fast indeed, but just moving around the island wouldn't be that dangerous combat-wise. The game already included a fail-safe measure, spawning severely weakened versions of the most common encounters if your character is low level.
I might have to come back to Morrowind and try to get to Solshteim. I never made it there when I was still playing Morrowind, honestly I didn't know how, but it would be nice to compare Morrowind and Skyrim's version.
Never spent much time in either places until this year. I've only passed through the southern tip of Solstheim but I really don't see what's the big attraction. Mournhold reminds me of Oblivion's Imperial City the way you go from one area to another. Mournhold's layout and sewers are better than the IC but that's about it. Not enough to make me want to stay very long.
Is that pretty much for pure RP? I can't imagine how that wold be beneficial at all, especially Mournhold..there is nothing there to do to level up your character to the 15 to 20 levels required to even complete it.
I've done a solstheim one, had to be careful so I wouldn't die terribly, but yeah, it works. Just don't rush into the main quest. Same can be said about Mournhold, went there and everything I accomplished was to get murdered by Goblins.
Those Mournhold goblins are a nasty bunch.
I did an RP of a nord that only ever stayed in solstheim. He was boy about to come of age from the skaal village that was eventually sent to investigate what the imperials were up to before he could go through his initiation tests (reason to start the MQ). definitely had a few challenges early, but exploring carefully to avoid being swarmed and doing some of the random quests helped. He used only weapons and armor sold by the skaal or thirsk smiths, though eventually used some of the gear he found on his adventures.
It was so long ago now that I don't remember much in terms of detail, but I was eventually able to complete the MQ and I remember it being a fun challenge. maybe i'll try it again with a dead is dead character to see how long I last.
When dealing with higher level enemies at a low level in general, scrolls and enchantments are your friend. If you find a way to stock up on a bunch, it is quite doable. I could imagine acquiring the initial funds or items would be quite the task however, but it is easily accomplishable with a ton of scrolls and enchantments until your character is strong enough to hold his own.
After being re-motivated by this thread I started a couple of new characters with the intent of them being exclusive to solstheim and it's definitely a solid challenge. Since I'm not adept enough to create an alternate start mod, I just stole the limeware plate in the census office to procure enough money to take silt striders and boats to khuul then used TCL to air walk from the dock at frostmoth to skaal village. lost the first 2 builds at level 1 fresh... one to a riekling that two shotted me and the second went into rimhull and got a beat down pretty quick.
The third one I decided would be based out of thirsk and that has proven the wiser choice (and probably how I did it all those years ago). have been able to make a living taking out horkers and plague wolfs, with the odd naked berserker which has me up to level 4 so far and have used the free beds in the mead hall and the smith to repair. He's not quite ready to try the rieklings or bears yet... and definitely would die a gruesome death if swarmed... but maybe soon he'll venture beyond the borders of the lake. axe, medium armor and block seem to be my primary skills
Sounds like you麓re having a fun challenge there, Throndar. Your character actually isn麓t far from my character in terms of occupation and lodgings
I didn't do exclusively Solstheim, but I did have a character that went their almost immediately and spent most of their time there. They were a stealthy archer type and I spent a lot of time hunting so I could get that snow wolf armor. Had to be really careful, though.
I may well have to try something like this... Solstheim is probably my favorite area in the game, so building up a character high enough to handle it is always one of my priorities to a new playthrough. Thinking about it, with the way the game is set up, roleplaying as a traveling Skaal wouldn't actually be that difficult, and it would have some fun implications for the main quest. Hmm...
Give it a whirl. I started a new solstheim only build a few weeks ago to relive it and it's been pretty fun. I found it was best to base myself out of thirsk as you have a free bed, a smith and plenty of mead and you don't have to fight through rieklings in every directions to leave, plus the inhabitants will talk to you. I spent a few hours fighting horkers and wolfs to get to around level 7 or 8 before I felt I could handle a riekling or reaver without getting 2 shotted. now I'm around level 12 and have taken the MQ to the point of having to go under the lake. definitely has taken smart play and pulling enemies from afar one at a time, but it's a worthy challenge. I haven't come across any werewolves yet, but will be soon enough, so we'll see how that turns out. I've grown fond of Throndar the third and really hope he doesn't die!
Bloodmoon has been my favourite part of the game. The main quest of bloodmoon is simply the best. Running around as a werewolf is just so much fun and I swam back to the mainland and murdered everyone in Khull hehehe Also the Raven Rock side quests are also very well done. They are the best side quests in the entire game
I recently read another thread with a similar topic and I just started a Solthsteim character. I went straight to find the hidden stash but it is very difficult to raise your skills and you will die often.
I too recommend The White Wolf of Lokan mod.
No it is not. It is very difficult yes... but for an experienced Morrowinder it is very playable. A fight with a wolf or a reickling may be very difficult and you will have to sleep and rest outside but I made it to Thirst and then to the secrete stash.
Have you even tried? it's a challenge, but I've been playing it without cheating or modding outside of graphics upgrades and I'm now well into the solstheim main quest.
Anything is possible in this game if you're smart and patient. Going from level 1-8 fighting only plague wolfs and horkers makes a solstheim only run very viable. By level 9 I was able to take on a riekling 1 on 1. Just because something is hard and you're too lazy or impatient to succeed doesn't make it only possible via cheats. Think outside the box and come up with a way.
I tried for mournhold once, but I died a lot and ended up deleting him. the only reason I tried was because my main character had high ordinators constantly after him for wearing the vivec ordinator armor and couldn't survive more than 10 seconds against them.
Mournhold is also doable. By the time you make your way there head straight for the Inn and save, then go to sleep. If you are not using a mod that prevents the dark brotherhood assassination attempts of your life then you should be attacked. Take the armour and sell it and then buy some good weapons and armour. Go straight to the sewer at the market and make your way to the dark brotherhood base and start taking them out one by one. It is a great way to become rich and you will be able to level out. Spend the money on potions because you'll need them. Don't go near the goblins as they will kill you instantly.
When I first played Morrowind I was attacked and I asked somebody about the dark brotherhood and they told me to go and speak to somebody in ebonheart. So I did and they told me where the dark brotherhood were and I went after them. My first play through I wiped them all out right away and I came out with loads of cash and then I left and started the main quest. Still the goblins were killer tough and so I left to start the main quest.
So what would be a good build for an all-Solstheim game as a wandering Skaal?
Spear and axe, I think would make good sense. Marksman as well. Kinda up in the air between Light or Medium armor. I personally would probably pick the latter. A little more protection, a little more durable, and really just as easy to come by. Fryse Hags have dropped Dreugh Cuirasses for me fairly consistently, as well as some of the respawning bandit types. Also perhaps block?
The toughest part, from what I can see, would be magic and tool-related skills. Unless I'm mistaken, there are no spellmakers on the island, and only one spell merchant who sells a bunch of Restoration spells. So Restoration would definitely be good, especially with those kinda game-changing Fortify Skill spells. But in any other school, you wouldn't really be able to acquire the spells. Same with tools. Armorer would be great, but to get at the hammers, you'd need to be able to spring quite a few level 30 to 50 locks, and I don't know where you'd acquire your first lockpicks, or get a sufficiently powerful Open spell. Alchemy would perhaps be more viable? I think Uncle Sweetshare has a decent alchemy set you can 'acquire,' and the changes made to ingredient effects made by BTB's Game Improvements almost seems designed for this, with a lot more useful effects early on. Oh, perhaps Conjuration as well?
