Anyone Else Annoyed About New Companion System?

Post » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:24 pm

Hi,

In Fallout 3, I hated companions, I enjoyed being the Lone Wanderer. I like being out in the huge Wastleland by myself. Now with the new companion system, It seems like they will be a main part of the game, almost necessary to use, anyone else annoyed about this?

actually so far as we know companions are no more necessary then they where in Fallout 3, it′s just they been made to work better and rewards those who do pick them up. But your not handicapped if you skip them and go solo.

Necessary? Heck no. They're no more necessary than companions have ever been in a Fallout game.

Are they more useful? Sure. More benefits to using and traveling with them? Yep. More depth and personality to their character? Absolutely. But at no point do you need them.

Fallout 1 and 2 had a ton of companions to collect that could travel and fight, and carry and do things for you. They weren't necessary then either. Heck, I'm playing Fallout 2 right now and I'm traveling with robot controlled by a chimp's brain, a super mutant, a talking deathclaw, and a [censored]ty lisbian farm girl who also happens to be my character's wife. Are even of them necessary? Nope. Hilariously fun for a gazillionth playthrough of the game? Quite. :twirl:

So basically your entire argument is that because companions are going to be better, easier to control, and give you a perk when traveling with you, and have their own quests, you are going to be compelled to recruit them? So please illuminate why you feel this makes them necessary to use.

I totally understand where the OP is coming from, at least from the perspective of being "Alone" out in the wastes. I alwats liked going solo and I hated having to keep an eye on my back to make sure my moronic companion was still following me. However, the companions in New Vegas are much improved, and there isn't anything forcing you to make use of them.

Nope. I MIGHT actually use companions this time around. I don't use them in any of the Fallouts. All [censored] useless IMHO.

That's true.

They don't seem more necessery, but much more worthwhile and interesting.

Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine... but it's sterile and I like the taste!

Sorry, this fit too perfectly..but on topic, really if they weren't needed in fallout 3, then they are not in NV. Obsidian is just increasing their intelligence and usefulness to the player.

There's no reason you can't not use companions. The only thing they really did was make using them way less frustrating. The only place where they seem necessary is in hardcoe mode, since you could really use the extra firepower and carry weight.

I wonder how many ways the 'companion quests' can be completed? Other than maybe Dogmeat in FO1, and Fawkes in 3, I don't think I've ever had a companion survive to the end of the game. It'd be nice to get a perk or karmic title even, related to leaving a trail of dead followers behind you.

That is one of the best quotes ever, IMO. :) My mate says that every five minutes.

I'm not interested in the companions in the slightest. Though that is just me. I'm not annoyed about it. I'll do their quests, and then fire/kill them. If they happen to grow on me, I'll keep them around

I don’t know how completely necessary the companions are going to be. I highly doubt the game is going to force you to play a certain way with a certain companion.

It seems they expanded the depth of the companion experience and made them easier to use. An improved system doesn’t have to mean "primary component of the game."

Like others have said, it gives you something experiment with and have some fun. I play solo most of the time too, but hey it’s fun to get to use companion for different stuff.

A sweep n clear in the DC ruins, a scaving mission in the deep wastes, a big heist. Hell, collect them and just leave em at your house for company.

Even though I only play with a companion(s) 15% of the time, I still enjoy that time and wouldn’t want it removed.

I guess the point is that companions are optional. Like alot of elements in the game. Gamble or don’t. Use explosives or not. Have a companion or ride solo, its your choice.

Don't use them. You shouldn't drag one along with you if it ruins your gameplay. I cannot imagine one would make such a difference that you couldn't survive in the game without one. The devs have to know, and appreciate, that a lot of players like to play solo.

I'd think of it more like this. The companions have always offered something to players that like them, this isn't any different in that respect, it's just that the devs have gone to some trouble to improve that experience.

And, no, I'm not annoyed. I can't wait to go pick one up and see what he/she can do and how all those improvements actually work in game.

I doubt they will be absolutely vital to much of anything unless you want 100% completion. Even then you merely complete their quest than kick them to the curb.

Personally I'm hopeful the changes will make them much more useful. In FO3 they were absolutely useless. Fawkes was a big dumb brute with bullet sponge qualities only Liberty Prime can trump, Dogmeat was either suicidal or incredibly stupid, because whenever ANYTHING popped up he would go charging off after it. Even Deathclaw. The rest of the followers were such horrible shots that they would be lucky to hit the very planet they're standing on. Not only that but if you played a sneaky character they were absolute suicide because the moment their AI detected a hostile they thought "Hrm, this sneaky stuff is working...but wait! ENEMY! AATTTTAAAAAAACK!" Suffice it to say that only Fawkes is alive on my game, and that's solely because he's a bullet sponge.

Why would I be annoyed? It look's like they have vastly improved the companion system.

You don't have to use them if you don't want to. No one's forcing you to use them.

Well, I suppose they might be "necessary" if you want to do all the quests. But you could always do the quests, get the associated rewards, and then ditch them.

Forever. Or if you really hate them, give 'em a lead sandwich and a shallow ditch to dirtnap in.

Companions were never necessary. They're characters that are useful to have for battle and provide exclusive perks with their addition to your team. You don't need to have one if you don't want to.It's more improve in NV with the companion wheel.I'll try to recruit every one for the trophy.
I'll be getting Boone.

So did I, but I have to admit I found Fawkes to be pretty useful both as a pack mule and in a pinch an extra BIG gun.

He was too overpowered as a companion though. He had vast amounts of HP and did a crazy amount of damage with his Gatling laser.

Yah, Fawkes could pretty much play the game for you, especially with broken steel.
I went to that horrible, horrible metro tunnel in broken steel, the one in the main quest of the DLC, the one FULL of Reavers fighting metro bots.
I stealthed away and let Fawkes go to work. The guy slaughtered all the enemies with barely a third of his health gone.

Dogmeat and RL-3 level absurdly with broken steel as well, and by 15+ they can take down every mob in the game without breaking a sweat too.
