Anyone else completely turned off by the cost?

Post » Sat Mar 01, 2014 9:46 pm

This is the first time I'm playing beta.

I have to say I like the game. I would happily pay the $80 for the box game and carry on with everyone. But from what I can see so far, I won't be wanting to pay the $15 a month. Why?

1. The thing I really hate is that all the urns, chests and everything lootable are up for grabs. I don't know how many rude people I've run across that have stepped right in front of me while I was bending down to open a chest, who've swiped it out from under me. Absolutely hate that type of thing, and it makes a good game frustrating.

2. Also....50 bag slots? And only 50 bank inventory? What happened to the GW2 and Everquest next shared-harvestable inventory style?

3. This game is Oblivion, or Skyrim. Only in Online version. Why do I need to pay monthly? There will be willing folks, certainly. But I can go play my PC versions when I crave. (with no one swiping my chests, with as much inventory space as I need.)

4. Everquest is Free to Play and I'll be there if I want MMO stuff. I spend money on EQ games regularly (station cash shop for mounts, housing items, gear, name changing and other services, potions, etc.) and there's no sub fee. Sony gets some money, and I've not got a sub crammed down my throat. It's why I left WoW. No more subs for me. It's the way it is in our household. None of us sub anymore. It's too #$%& expensive.

5. P.S. Close to release and still a lot of bugs - one in starter zones that gives me no loot from urns/vases on two characters. Wow.

Unfortunately, as ESO is a sub game, I won't be with you all when it opens. But thanks for letting me play the beta and see what it's about. I love Bethesda's games, and I can go back to my Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind any time - for free!

It all depends of the game quality. If these will be a good mmo, these prices will be fair. If teso will sux, it will go free to play pretty soon anyway.

I have no problem with it. My husband and I spent $160 for two imperial editions, and will sub with two accounts at a little over $30 a month. No offense, but if you don't have the disposable income to play the game, then just don't. I hate the f2p crowd; the majority of them ruin every game.

TESO is good game, but it has many flaws if compared to other TES. Skyrim which did many things better costed only 35€ when pre-ordered and you have unlimited access to the game. I do understand TESO needs money to keep up the servers but I really think subscription only is bad way to sell it. I'd rather pay 300€ for the game and have unlimited access to it than to pay 13€ every month.

I would also have totally no problem with the current payment model if you'd have possibility to play the game offline without monthly payment. As I see it should be is 60€ for the game itself and the 13€ monthly payment only for online access and MMO aspect of the game. I do not see it necessary (or likable) to see other people running in my game but I really like the idea to explore whole Tamriel at the second era.

Typically the best thing about having a sub means that there's no cash shop. Unfortunately not the case here, we get both.

While all that is true the bottom line, for me and for others, is that I'm paying full price for a game and then having to pay another $15 a month to play it when I can buy any other video game off the shelf once and never have to pay again for it. There are multiple RPG's, some of them multiplayer, that you only have to pay for once.

My biggest problem is that they could charge $5.00 per month and still make tons of money off the people who will be playing this game. Unless I see if for myself no one is going to convince me that companies selling MMO's aren't making money hand over fist with subscriptions fees and the profits are much more than selling the game was. Either charge low monthly fees or charge a low fee, or give it away, for the game and then charge $15.00 per month. Charging $60.00 for a game that is only good for one month unless you pay $15.00 per month more is way to much.

Actually it's not cheapest. The cheapest video games are the ones that you only pay once for and then can play for as long as you have a console to play them on. MMO's are the most expensive games to buy because you have to pay full price and then on top of that you have to pay monthly for the "Privilege" to continue to play a game that you have already bought and own.

Skyrim had a couple DLC packs and then was for all intents and purposes abandoned a year after it came out. That's why you didn't have a subscription.

I don't think so, at least not in any meaningful way. If they've changed their mind, I've missed where they said so.

Guess what? I can still put it in and play it. Hell, I can install Daggerfall and still play it today if I wanted it. Sure they are not multiplayer but I could buy multiplayer RPG's and do that same exact thing.

I'm not expecting them to continue making DLC for a game after a year. They have other new games to work on. If I pay $60 for a game and they release 1 or 2 major DLC's for it than the game will last me for as long as I want to play it and that game will NEVER cost me 1 penny more, unless I want to buy the DLC and even then I'm not forced to buy the DLC to continue to play the game.

NO! I spend more money every week on beef jerky and pistachio snacks than I will on a month of this game.

Urg... are all you complainers unemployed or just unwilling to cut back on something else to play this game?

Love the sub. FTP blows chunks. Wouldn't even be bothered with the game of it wasn't sub based. I am happy to not have to play with the povs that can't cut back on the smokes, lattes, beers to save enough for $15/month.

The only questions that remains is whether or not the game is actually worth the sub... I'm talking about end game content and a constant feed of new stuff.

As long as we get near monthly content updates, i'm fine paying a monthly fee. I'll keep paying my WoW one too. $30/month to keep me entertained, whereas many people are out buying 2-3 $60 games a month.

Sub MMOs save me money.

Yeah you CAN play your old games for free, but you don't because you're tired of them. If you aren't, go play them then and don't whine about ESO's subscription.

it's cute that you think this community represents the global potential audience of ESO and that this community isn't hella biased.

I can afford the game, I can afford the sub costs. What I have a problem with is the price of the sub costs + the price of the game together and the fact that there are other multiplayer RPG's , if I wanted to play them, that are free to play online and cost nothing more than the price of the game. I have a huge stack of games that I can play and not have to pay 1 penny more, and most of them include online play.

Either cut the sub fees to a reasonable price or cut the price of the game to a low price, or give it away, to entice people to actualy buy it and try it. They make tons off of sub fees, much more than they do for the actual game itself.

Right, you're also running it all on your own hardware, not someone else's servers. If you like single player games, small map/small population multiplayer games, and/or games supported by microtransactions, play them. I like paying a small fee for a continuously growing and changing world full of people, so I'll play this. Whether I can afford something or not, if I don't find the experience or product worth the cost, I take my business elsewhere. Simple.

Actually you are wrong, I play games that are over 10 years old. I play Adventure games on my PC that are close to 20 years old.

The reason I'm voicing my opinion is because I can. This is an open forum for anyone to voice their opinion if they see something they disagree with. I disagree with how ESO is being charged for. I normally don't play MMO's but I would try this one IF the sub cost were not so high OR the game wasn't priced so high to start with.

If you don't like my post, please feel free to ignore it. This is a valid complaint that many people have.

Is swtor a good game? Yes*.

*The story line/class missions alone are are worth playing the game for. Where the game failed (imo) is in end game content. They released the game with *1* end game dungeon, and made pvp armor a luck based lottery system. As for f2p version of swtor, it drives home why people hate f2p games. They nickel and dime you to death.

I understand if you don't feel like paying a subscription for games, it is up for us all to decide for ourselves. The thing is that I get really annoyed when people say that they don't want to pay a subscription because there are sooooo many games they can play for free. That always brings up the question; why aren't these people playing those free games and just skip this one pay to play game?

I also don't think you can start comparing the cost of single player games and the cost of mmo's.

For me it has to do with the fact that this would be the first MMO that I would try and play but I'm not going to play $60 for the game, even if it does include a month, and then have to pay $15 a month more for the "Privilege" to play a game that I've already paid full price for. The price of the game is too much if you include the cost of the sub fees and the price of the sub fees is too much if you include the price of the game.

If one of them were reduced than it would entice me to play it and even pay monthly to try it.

I am really glad that the game will have a subscription cost. That will keep out the trolls. I had much rather pay to play with others who have actually invested in the game. I also will be delighted when the official forums open at launch. I am presuming that they will be for registered game owners only. What a sweet roll of a delight it will be to interact with other game owners only!

I think the subscription fee is a small price considering all the http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127140-Elder-Scrolls-Online-Has-Five-Years-of-Content-Planned they have planned.

If you say it's not worth that much money, I can't say you're wrong because it's also up for everyone to decide what they think the game is worth.

For me it is not too much and I'll try to explain why;

I played WoW for years and paid the subscription for it. I only bought 1-3 other games a year. Mostly Fallouts and TES games because I really like how they are done and they have loads of content. When I finally got bored of WoW I started buying a lot more games and unfortunately many games are only worth 5-20 hours and yet they cost me 10-50€ a piece. Then I got interested in ESO and I though "Maybe that's the next MMO I'll play, so I don't have to buy these crappy games every week to entertain myself for short moments only".

I don't know how you play your games, but if I get excited for a game, I probably don't play anything else as long as it keeps me occupied. So I consider myself saving money when playing ESO, a lot of money.
