Anyone else completely turned off by the cost?

Post » Sun Mar 02, 2014 8:51 am

is anyone else completely turned off by the cost of this game? 60 dollars + 15 a month is a ton of money, and I know if they took off the subscription I would be glad to get this game, but as long as that is there, there is no way I will be buying this game.

TERA Tried this, It doesn't work, you may get away with it because of the title, but I know a lot of people are turned off because of the sub cost

I also think Tera is a great F2P game.

However consider this: The game is free for the first month. I can guarantee you could play the hell out of it for a month and be perfectly content with what you accomplished after the month is done. With that in mind, your purchase would be no different than buying any other reasonably priced video game!

If you ever feel the need to play again, pay the 15$ and get your fix!

But I would never buy the initial 60 dollar game while knowing I have to pay 15 dollars a month to play.

Who says you'll want to play it after a month? What if you just live and breath it for a month. Get it in and out of your system..like a regular video game.

On a regular game he could come back later and mess around for free. Here he would need to pay more.

I agree with op. The combination of both is bad. Though I personally prefer subscription as that guarantees there will be updates.

No, if it was free to play or buy to play I wouldn't bother with it. If they ever stop the subscription system, I'll drop the game.

Can you elaborate on this a bit?

But can you honestly say that there will be an update the following month the game is launched? They'll be ramping up for the console release. Dragonborn, a Skyrim DLC which provided a new land mass and more than 20 hours of gameplay was priced at 20$ (now at 10$). Do you think you'll be getting a "Dragonborn" every month? :P

Sure a subscription fee will guarantee updates, but will the content delivered outweigh how much you've paid into the game?

Has you ever played any F2P games into the endgame as in raiding or competitive PvP?

I ask as most F2P games are pretty much free at lower level unless you want to burn money.

Yes I have done it in Runes of magic, used $3-400 before I found that the endgame svcked duck.

WOW was a far cheaper and far better game.

No it will not be dragonborn sized updates. Remember that servers and support and moderation also cost money.

Add that dragonborn took far longer than an month to male, Skyrim also had far over 20 million sales.

ESO might have 2 million long term subscribers.

However nothing stops you from dropping subscriptions some months and come back later.

How do games like Guild Wars do it, though?

Dragonborn taking more than a month to develop doesn't really add much to this; it would go against the meager 20$ they charged for it. Based on the ZOS subscription model, they should've charged something around 60$ or $80.

Skyrim sold 20 million games because of how accessible it is -- from price to game play.

But yes. I personally believe people can get their "Skyrim's worth" out of TESO if they just play it for free for that month.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127140-Elder-Scrolls-Online-Has-Five-Years-of-Content-Planned

They might have a few ideas mapped out for the future.

Explaining the latter point, Firor said: "The other reason is we really want a steady forecastable revenue stream so we can do constant updates. We're working on post-launch content right now, and we want to make sure we're covering all of the new content, which will hopefully be released every month or six weeks, for as long as people want to play the game.

"When I talk about new content, I mean, we're launching with the Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild questlines, but we're going to launch the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood at some point as part of the regular updates. And those are 15 hours of content a piece. We're talking major new stuff, which is going to be coming out constantly. And the way to do that the best for us is with a subscription."

Pete Hines' interview.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/450862/interviews/interview-bethesdas-pete-hines-on-the-legacy-of-wolfenstein-and-the-eso-subscription-model/

I believe they have plans. Whether they can keep to their plans is the question.

With each of the faction questlines running around 200 hours *each* for $60.00 for the base game without pvp, I don't think they are exactly overcharging. There are a lot of games that give much less content and cost just as much. If they can add the content updates they apparently want to, I don't mind the sub. Pay $15.00 for content I want/am interested in, or wait and buy a $60 game that lasts for less than 20 hours that I might not be that interested in.....the $15 is cheaper, really. There are, as far as anyone knows at this point, no contracts written in blood and bound with the player's immortal soul that you have to stay subbed for eternity, so as long as you can quit if you want, there shouldn't be too many problems.

Now is SWTOR an good game? Yes Sub games who goes F2P tend to be better than designed F2P games.

On the other hand EA kind of have an bad reputation for some reason.

I don't know Eden Eternal.

Nope, especially with the rapid updates I've seen so far. If they keep it up, it will be a bargain at twice the price.

If you can't afford $15/month, you have more serious issues to attend to in your life. An mmo is about the cheapest hobby that exists.
