What does "smaller" even mean? It is smaller by some arbitrary scale of terrain units. The perceived map size also depends on running speed (that's why morrowind felt so big), distant rendering and content. Also, when talking about overall game size, you would have to include dungeons.
Measuring a game by it's map size is like measuring a computer program by it's lines of code, if you know what I mean.

We know Oblivion was 16 square miles and Morrowind was closer to 8 square miles, that's what people are on about.
The mountains, vallies, etc will make it feel bigger than Oblivion. Ftw
Also I read 20+ previews this week and I have only heard compliments to the size. Example -- I was in my horse for 20 min and was surpsied that I had not gone too far on the map. Read the previews and anyone who is nervous should be put to ease.
Although it is roughly the same size as Oblivion's Cyrodiil (approximately 41 square kilometers in area or 25.4 miles), it is the least populated of all regions in Tamriel and features more lush forests and grassy areas than Cyrodiil.
I'm not too worried. At the start of the gamplay video, we see a Dragon perched on top of a ruin in the distance. (Bleak Falls Barrow) It looks miles away in the game, but on the map it seems a relatively short distance.
i'll take size over content ay day. it is ot, i my opinion, realistic when you are encountering things every 20 seconds or so. i'd like time to breath and have time to reflect.
hope mountains make it feel bigger  Ely
After comparing Morrowind, Oblivion and now Skyrim maps i have to say i'm feeling a little concerned that it's a tad smaller as i really liked the huge maps in previous games. Anyone else feeling the same?
Remember there is more content both "higher up" and "below ground" not to mention at ground level. Skyrim will actually be larger in terms of total areas to explore and adventure.
The "map" being smaller is an illusion. It is caused by zooming out of the map. When you zoom out the same map becomes smaller. No one has had the time to actually compare the three maps KM to KM, Mile to Mile..... You can't judge it because you don't know the zoom level.....
In general, yes. Skyrim's map, compared to Oblivion map, is indeed smaller, and that's so far been the main concern I've had, that the gameplay world is smaller.
