Anyone else disapointed with Fallout?

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:15 pm

I just got the Fallout Collection, and I am shocked. It just does nothing for me.
I sat down, expecting a mind blowingly awesome game, and what I got was, that.

I knew that it was 12 years old, isometric and turn based before I bought it. But even so.

2.5 stars.

I would post a poll, but there's already one floating around.

Why were you disapointed? What didn't you like?

That is the difference between critisim and, well, looking for a meaningless argument.

It's not for everyone :) Nothing is, I don't think.

But it makes sense if you're going to play the series in reverse, that you may fall short of expectations. Fallout 1 & 2 aren't games suited for an FO3 demographic, afterall.

But maybe this isn't so different from what some people felt after playing FO3.

...

I guess I'd be a little curious as to what you didn't like about it. But like FalloutChris said - it's kind of a niche game. Not everyone is going to go for that. I do wonder how long into the game you've got? I've noticed with myself, at least - sometimes it takes me a while to get into the older games nowadays, before I really start to see what the appeal is. (ie, not liking it before you've got out of the Caves is a bit different than not liking it halfway through the game. Though I guess if you're not having fun with it - it's unlikely you're going to be playing it very long. :) )

It's a good game, it just takes a while to get into it. Beginning of the game is a bit suffering, but not nearly as brutal as BG 1. I like RPGs where speech skills are as important as combat. D&D doesn't put enough emphasis on this, beyond the occasional speech check to get a slightly better reward or more gold as a quest reward.

I hear you.

FO3 and the previous Fallouts are so different, thus liking one doesn't automatically mean that you'll like the other. But still, can you be a bit more specific about what you didn't like?

As a fan of the originals, I bought Fallout 3 expecting a crummy game like Oblivion that would only be playable with numerous fan made mods.

To my shock, the game is a blast without mods... so much so that I got the 360 version.

When I first got my hands on Fallout 1 it wasn't appealing for me either. I didn't get it, barely made it out of the cave and then got killed by radscorpions in a random encounter. I dropped it and didn't touch it for at least 1,5 years. On one boring afternoon with no new games I dug it up again and gave it a real try. After a while playing and learning the basics my eyes were opened. Then again, I can perfectly understand that this isn't a great game for most people. I just hope you gave it more of a chance than I did at first, because there are hardly any games I've ended up enjoying more than Fallout 1 and 2.

I would recommend/suggest that you read the Fallout [PDF] manual and play the game again.

The series was never intended as a FPP Sandbox ~which is also why a lot are truly upset & disappointed with the "about face" that the series has taken. (Looks like Dawn of War is about to slide down the same drain ~Relic is making an FPS shooter clone called SPACE MARINE, If it succeeds... Goodbye DOW3).

Realize that unlike Fallout 3, in Fallout you can actually make a difference in the places you visit. With experience you might appreciate the game, might even appreciate the combat ~(in the very least with a little time it will not be so alien, or a deal breaker).
Fallout is quite possibly one of the best games that you own ~In a way that Fallout 3 can't begin to compete with.

Strewth mate, I dunno. I am a Fallout tragic who started out this series with F1 & 2, and have "googled" Fallout 3 for years to find any news I could glean on the subject hoping someone would take it on.

Played F3 and absolutely loved it, am delighted to see it has a future, and look forward to seeing where the franchise takes us over the next bit.

I kinda fit into neither "demographic" I'm afraid.

Just a guy who loves RPGs.

I revisited F1&2, Arcanum, Torment as well as Morrowind/Shivering Isles and ES+expansions in the year before the release of F3, to get a feel for it.
Came back to Fallout 2 for a second bite in the weeks before Fallout 3's release.

Fallout came out as I was learning cgi, and the 3dsMax cut scenes were something to strive for. My first few years were spent "distressing every" texture on every surface I applied it to? lol?.. I absorbed every tile in those early games with a passion.
Fallout 3 is a great game, and I look forward to seeing where they take it.
Sorry for those of you who lament the direction it has taken.
Maybe it's time to move on to something that excites you, or find a bunch of like minded souls to create a killer game that has all the elements you feel are lacking in this one.
I'll buy it? we need more great RPG titles after all.

i got the white label collection a few months ago (before i got FO3, lest NMAfriends rage) and i liked Fallout quite a lot - if i had to make a list of alltime favorite games it'd probably be at least second on it. the world was amazing, the characters were interesting and the gameplay, while definitely niche, was fascinating and original. i grew up with things like Baldur's Gate so i sort of had experience with ISOMETRIC FUNTIME (though they're not really all that comparable (BALDUR'S GATE WITH GUNS)), but playing it for the first time, even so many years after it came out, was a really cool experience.

i WAS, however, somewhat disappointed with Fallout 2. the things it added in terms of fleshing out the world (the Vault experiments, the Enclave, etc.) were really cool and some of the NPCs (particularly Marcus) were extremely memorable, but it added nothing in terms of gameplay and it felt too immature overall. there was far too much six, pop culture, and [hmm?] jokes. part of the reason why i like Fallout 3 so much is because it was a lot closer to the original than it was to Fallout 2 - the air of SURVIVAL and rising from the rubble and whatever was featured a lot more heavily, instead of people just occupying standing cities, rigging up neon lights and running casinos and brothels and porm studios.

and yeah mrBun has it right. i do feel kindof bad for the people who grew up with Fallout and don't like where it's gone. honestly, after i played FO1&2 i was very hesitant about FO3 - all those people saying OBLIVION WITH GUNS suddenly had me thinking "maybe they're right". i did like where Fallout 3 went, though - it WAS tamer than the first two, yes, but that's more the industry's fault than Bethesda's. most of the "maturity" or whatever is still there; it's just implied, rather than stated outright (which i prefer, somewhat). a lot of people are unfair about the quality of the writing, though. there's some dumb stuff in Fallout 3, yes, but there's easily as much dumb stuff in the first two. i know it isn't saying much (and i long for the days when i would be hesitant to write something like this) but Fallout 3 has MUCH better writing than really any other RPG on the market today.

anyway this isn't a FALLOUT 3 svckS thread (yet, at least (dear god)) so i'm gonna stop.

what exactly didn't you like about it? the combat i can understand, and if you can't look past that then i doubt you'd enjoy going through the game (waiting four minutes for unrelated NPCs and children to run away from you and someone else fighting sure is fun, guys), but if you can i'd really suggest you give it another try. if you've played FO3 but haven't played any of the old Infinity Engine games i doubt you'd be able to get into it at all, but you should try! it's a good game.

Fallout 3 was a terrible game! Fallout 1 had a fantastic story, great characters and amazing replay value....on the other hand, Fallout 3 had basically no story, extremely underdeveloped characters and no replay value. If anything, this poll should have been titled: Was Anyone Else Disappointed With Fallout 3.

Come on now, we're only wondering why someone who loved Fallout 3 does not like Fallout 1. Please don't start the usual Classics vs Beth's Fallout, we've had enough of these. ;)

I'm also curious as to why you didn't like the game. Maybe those of us who love it will be able to help you.

...Just a guy who loves RPGs.

Same here. I started the series with Fallout 3, and was drawn to that because it "was made by the guys who did Morrowind and Oblivion". However, I am not a fan of shooter-style games, and the feral ghoul on the back cover didn't exactly fill me with optimism, as I really dislike zombies. They creep me out. (incidentally, I didn't want to make the leap from 2d to 3d Zelda games because I didn't like the idea of enemies creeping up on me- but I took the plunge then, too!)

That said I love RPGs, and I loved Fallout 3. So much so, that when I saw the White Label collection, I knew I had to get it. Luckily, I'd played the original Baldur's Gate ("Go for the eyes, Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!!!") so I knew what Interplay games made in the 90's were like, and it's lived up exactly to my expectations. Although i've found myself being drawn to playing Fallout 2, but i'm trying to finish the first one, first.

They're good games, is what i'm trying to say. You've just gotta look at them like you were playing them the day they came out. Don't look at them through the eyes of someone playing a game in 2009. Imagine what it was like playing it back in 1997.

C'mon, Fallout 1 deserves your love. Just let it in!

I liked FO1 a great deal when it came out. I still think it's one of the best games I have played, but I enjoy playing it less now. I never did much like FO2. I keep thinking of the Monty Python "Things are getting too silly" skit when i play it.

I greatly enjoy playing fO3. Is it a better RPG than FO1? no, it's not, but I think it's a better game for me.

I found something negative about Fallout 1 & 2 as well. knowing them and their story lines is probably the only reason why Fallout 3 appeared to me as a pretty shallow and hollow game without any favorable innovation, if you consider a game - especially a role playing game - as a mind challenging thing.
if FO 1 & 2 just had been worse! I'm pretty sure FO 3 would have been a much better experience for me.
DAMN YOU, FO 1 & 2, FOR BEING SO GOOD!!! I HATE YOU BOTH!!!

no no.. just kidding! *fondly petting his old copies*

It took me awhile to get into fallout 1, after I did so I really enjoyed it, though FO2, don't know why I just couldn't get into it. Though I like FO3 the most, mainly because I prefer action RPGs more then turnbased.

I'm not sure why I didn't like it.
I guess it's really because I couldn't see where it was going , or work anything out.
I spent AGES in V15 looking for that [censored] waterchip, and when I finally resorted to the wiki... It still made no sense.

I'm currently in the watershed sewers and I've no idea where to go.

I considering giving Fallout 2 a go after my blood test later; though if it's basically the same then there' no point.

Heh, this is what happens when you spoil modern players with quest arrows that show them exactly where to go Bethesda. I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY!

Your monitor brightness or the in-game preference option brightness? I've personally never had a problem with the darkness in F1 or 2.

Yeah, this is why I hate quest arrows. Seriously the environments in Fallout and Fallout 2 aren't that large, often the most obvious path is the correct one. Anyway if you're trying to repair the Water Pump for the Ghouls that live in the sewer, then you need to find the "junk" that's lying around in a mole rat cave in the sewers beneath the water shed. You can then repair the pump and go down the ladder in the room next to the jail cells in the water shed to find Necropolis' vault, and on the third floor of that you'll find the water chip in a beeping computer. If you don't care about repairing the pump for the Ghouls, then skip to the latter.
