Anyone else disappointed with character customization?

Post » Tue Nov 19, 2013 4:32 pm

Not to complain, but I have to say that character customization is a bit, minimal.

True, there are many facial features that can be changed, but, truth be told, they hardly make a difference, and only under close inspection can the extremes be judged.

For example, I was trying to created an altmer to look like a snow elf but, alas, the skin tone would not become the right color, of course there were literally hundreds of possibilities with the jaw alone despite being largely indifferent.

I know that's kind of a poor example, but I'm sure you understand the midst of it and its the only I could think of this moment.

What I would expect would be they same amount possibilities, (or less even) but spread out over a larger spectrum.

Has anyone else noticed this?

(p.s. the face sculptor fixed the issue of being stuck with something you designed, perhaps by accident, on your character.)

I think it's a way better than the character customization in Oblivion but still has a lot of room for improvement in future TES games.

It's hard not to build ugly people beyond choosing either Redguards or Nords. But you can build very ugly Nords just by choosing the default presets.

Clearly nobody at BGS knows anything about standards of http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Botticelli-primavera.jpg.

It's pretty good, but I hope there is improvement--at least more options for eyes and eyebrows.

I'm more disappointed in the lack of hair options; usually I'm fine with what's there, but the crewcut looks horrible, nothing at all like a proper crewcut. Though that's not a big deal, since I only use the crewcut hair style if I actually have one myself in real life; what I would have liked much more are salt-and-pepper options for those of us who like the look of partially gray--or are partially gray in real life and just can't help but make characters that look like we do.

So all in all, I'm pretty content with it, and more so with the Face Sculptor, but I would have liked being able to customize hair styles and colors at, say, a dedicated barber shop in each city, and face paint options by yourself at any time. The Sculptor ought to be just for physical features.

Of course you wont be able to make an Altmer look like a snow elf, they're two different races. I'm actually willing to bet they didn't give any of the elves a possible skin-tone that would be light enough on purpose, and probably expected people to attempt this.

but anyway, i disagree. the facial customization is better than most console games I've ever played.

The only critiques i can make are on height and physique... and sadly, my favorite race, Argonians. Aside from feathers/horns and tons of color options, the faces look pretty damn similar on most Argonians.

Yep. No ability to alter height and "weight" here just means muscle mass are my two biggest issues. I'm also not happy that the camera doesn't allow you to zoom in to see what different colors the eyes are, which combined with the lack of numbers or names for each part of the slider makes it a bit of a pain to figure out what you're looking at sometimes.

Then there's the lack of attributes, traits, birthsigns, and the fact that all members of a race get the same stats to start out with, rather than letting me pick and choose as I see fit.

I used to worry about character customization until I realized that I never see my character's face as I play in First Person. Now, I randomize a couple of times, and call it good. If the face was more a part of the game, I would spend more time on it.

Yes I think being able to adjust weight and height would be good options and all characters seem to look ripped.

YES!

No ability to fine-tune features(nose, eyebrows, lips...), no decent way to age (or de-age) your character. Then there are camera and lighting problems when you do create a character.

You don't even get a second chance to change things one last time like in Morrowind and Oblivion so you have to go through the whole damn opening if you're unsatisfied with what you created or go aaaaall the way to Riften and pay 1000 gold to that Bosmer chick. It certainly "looks" better but it's like it took two steps forward and one step back. You could say that about a lot of features in the game, actually.

I don't know... I'm pretty happy with the character gen. I think the blotchy nose and wrinkled foreheads of vanilla Skyrim were awful but in Oblivion you had to deal with some really ugly splotchy faces too. Once you start applying mods both games can make good looking characters, but I think Skyrim wins out. With mods on the PC I much prefer my http://i.imgur.com/vmgb7yr.jpg in Skyrim over my http://i.imgur.com/RXyEDwO.png in Oblvion, and I really liked that elf at the time.

I wouldn't mind Aion's character customization though... sliders for everything be it height, arm and leg thickness, torso width, neck length, or even foot size.

Seemed pretty amazing to me, though I do agree that it would have been nice if Oblivion's skin tone changer was in Skyrim so that we could change the colors of the races. In ES6 I would like different pattens for Khajiit and Argonians.

It's way much better than the past games... They either don't have enough choices or was just down right broken...

Characters overall look much better, however, I find myself missing some of the customizations available in previous games.

Given all the issues I've taken with Skyrim, this really isn't much of an issue for me, I can deal with it.

Skyrim so far is tbe best in the series as far as character creation goes. In Oblivion if you moved one slider all of the sliders moved and I created dozens of monsters and freaks before getting the character I wanted. Morrowind was the best game in the series but I could only choose a few faces and a few hairs per each race.

At least in Skyrim we can choose a nose and eye option and manipulate it to some degree.

I will say I want this series to continue to add diversity to character creation as your character is the focal point of the story and your roleplay. I think The Elder Scrolls Onlines way of character creation is the way to go. We can change everything about our characters they can be obese or thin and they can be muscular as well. With the face you can make mer have the grizzled look of Skyrims depiction of them or the softer look of Oblivion. Then there is body tattoos in the vanilla game something else I have been wanting. Everything about ESO character creation looks to be an improvement and what I want for TESVI character creation wise.

Minimal, indeed. The physical restraints are not very exciting. Not only the physical traits but with the skill aspect as well. I don't mean that stupid preset class gibberish. I'm talking about a complex line of initial aspects to define your character.

To paraphrase the Emperor, you will be remembered for what you do, not what you've done. I'm perfectly satisfied with starting my characters as a blank slate and defining them ten points and a perk at a time.

Lots of room for improvement, tonnes, but I can make characters I like, which is more than I can say for practically all other games.

Still yes, the customisable features are largely a waste of space, doing nothing. I don't need to change the colour of my neck honestly. Meanwhile there is a lot of stuff you should obviously be able to change and can't.

I think the character models are great, the presets are pretty damn great even, but your ability to customise them is way too minimal.

I enjoy Character Creation. It's serviceable and gives a good variety of choices. I don't feel there's any real need to go too extreme with it considering by the end of the game, nine times out of ten you'll be wearing a helmet that covers your face anyway.

Well...I live my real life in First Person too....but I still want to look good.

So yes, I would have liked to see Skyrim allow us more options. Hopefully TES VI will take care of this. Skyrim is much better than previous games though.

You live in a bloodthirsty world where the value of your life is determined by how strong your sword arm is. Any freelance adventurer/mercenary isn't going to look like much after a few Bandits drive a wood and iron shield into their face.

You want to look good? I hear there's a http://uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Desele%27s_House_of_Earthly_Delights looking for help. :bunny:
