Anyone else doing a "last grand tour" of Oblivion?

Post » Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:56 am

Hello there-

It's been a while since I played a great deal of Oblivion, so I'm currently having a "last hurrah" sort of fling with the game before Skyrim eats my life.

I didn't feel like strolling around on one of my old "already better than everyone in Cyrodiil" characters; god mode would only be amusing for a few minutes. So I started two newbies, a sort of yin and yang with some fairly strict limitations and the difficulty slider kicked up from my usual:

THE GOOD: A pure caster, Breton, dedicated to all things good and decent. Cannot use armor of any sort. Cannot murder or steal. I've always played very stealthy casters before (with 100 speed, 100 stealth, and 100 destruction, you can more or less sprint invisibly through necro/conjurer/bandit/vampire dungeons, ragdolling anything in your path with one zap), and it's a fun new thing for me to have this guy strolling around openly, torch in hand, inviting attacks and getting into some fairly drawn-out duels with casters and archers.

THE BAD: A marksman-assassin, Argonian, dedicated to all things greedy and evil. Cannot use Destruction or Restoration magic at all. Not pursuing any of the main quest after tossing the Amulet of Kings at Joffre. It's pretty amusing, trying to crank maximum damage out of bows, arrows, and alchemy in a way I never did before.

I expect these two will keep me busy and help control my anticipation pains for Skyrim over the next few weeks.

Anyone else taking a long last stroll through Cyrodiil before the new game hits?

Same here really, I'm going back to uni soon and I'm not taking the xbox straight away so I'm having one last rush of my favourite games before I go. Then when Skyrim's out I'll definitely be fetching the xbox, if I haven't before then of course
I'd say I'm not really rushing through oblivion, I'm just trying to spend as much time as I can with my two characters before a long break. (One's a generally good mage, poor, with kleptomania so she steals on occassion. One is a strong fighter, arena champion with ties to the dark brotherhood. Something happened recently that's making him consider cutting his ties though.)

Do you roleplay? Because if you do Oblivion is likely to be able to fill many hundreds of hours!

Well, I'm doing a long stroll through Cyrodiil that started several years ago. I don't believe I'm half way done though, so Skyrim can wait.

Yeah, that's the purpose of this last playtrough i started ~1 month ago. Finished main quest last night, but there's still the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood questlines and Shivering Isles i want to go trough. I also wanted to play my other character trough once more, but i don't think there's enough time for that

Yep! I created a new character recently and have been replaying Oblivion. I'm looking for all the little quests I missed my first time around.

Yup! Rythan is the avatar in which I am taking my last tour. He has to make sure the Deadra are defeated before Skyrim comes out!

My last tour started in January and I don't think I'm going to get nearly as much done as I hoped.

Yea it is. :

I guess you could say I am doing a "last hurrah" with Kate. Really, it's more like I'm doing questlines I never got to over these past 3 years. mostly Thief's Guild and Dark Brotherhood stuff. And Umbacano's questlines, too. Some of my charcters started finding Ayleid statues, but none of them have ever found them all and I REFUSE to cheat on UESP here, so it's up to Kate to get it done. :)

No... just as I play Daggerfall and Morrowind now.. I will still play Oblivion when Skyrim is released. TES games are not mutually exclusive.

I've had Oblivion for well over a year now and never played it so I'm doing my first play through before I get Skyrim. I have it on pre-order. I'm more into the linear games, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, but I'm finding this exploration rather freeing. It's a nice change of pace.

Once you play Oblivion (and most likely Skyrim), you will find the linear games to be very lacking. I promise!

I'm sure. I have Kingdoms of Amular: Reckoning on pre-order for February too. I played Fallout 3 which I really like, but nothing open world in the fantasy realm which is my favorite genre other than science fiction. The problem is that I work full time and am an author working on my second novel (editing stage), so my gaming time is limited. I have until November 11th to finish Oblivion, novel needs to be edited for printing by January 15th and February 7th, Reckoning comes out. I'm going to be very busy.

Skyrim won't stop me playing Oblivion. If anything, I'll play Skyrim a few times and go back to Oblivion out of choice.

If by "finish" you mean "finish the main story quest line", then you have more than enough time before Skyrim comes out. However, that's not even 5%(*) of the game :)

I've been playing Oblivion since it came out and I still am finding out new things.

(*) Made up percentage

I looked up the word "last" and apparently it has something to do with making shoes.

Cobblers to that idea!
