Anyone else find multiplayer games too frustrating?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 12:29 pm

So i thought i'd vent my spleen at the "entertainment" known as multiplayer gaming. I really do find it as an anger generator more than anything if i'm honest. It turns me into a hot headed rhino after a session now.

Things like:
Someone doesn't know your there, you shoot them then they turn round and shoot you, you die.

Your bullets appear to only do half as much damage as anyone else.

(the best one) your bullets don't do any damage at all. You then get shot and die.

Anyone else feel this same way?

It happens to everyone. Happened to me on Black Ops last night. Got the jump on a guy and he spun around and popped me.

But on the flip side, how many times do you think others have had the same thing happen to them when they're shooting at you?

No multiplayer game is going to be perfect and you have to just learn to live with the flaws. Also, this is why you don't buy a multiplayer-heavy game at launch. Far too many bugs.

If I had to take a guess I'd say that you're just not very good at this game.

It happens to all of us when we pick up a new shooter, the process from noob to pro is always extremely frustrating and painful.

Here's what you do: Practice (a lot), play on servers near you (less lag) and most importantly learn from your mistakes.

Multiplayer games frustrate me but for different reasons. Take Diablo 2 for instance. The game is full of rich lore and atmosphere. Until you go online. Then everyone's rushing through the game as fast as possible, skipping the story elements, tossing around jargon like "WTT SOJ LBJ for DPS!!"... Nobody's really taking the time to enjoy the game and soak it all in and if you try to yourself you get left behind.

There is a reason for that. Most people who still play D2 have already completed the game many times.

of course no one wants to focus on the story when you're levelling your fourth character.

I feel your pain dude. I svck at multiplayer games. Whenever I play COD online, I don't get so much as frustrated, but annoyed that I can't do anything at points. Sometimes I have a lucky streak where I do really good, but it doesn't last long. The people who are really good seem to have so much extra time to get better, and I don't know where they get it all either. I come back from school and work and I barely have anytime left after dinner to practice at it. GRGGRAAADUUAGAAAAHHHHHGGGRRAAAAAA!!!!

I really don't like many competative multiplayer games. Probably becasue I'm not that competative when it comes to games.
It feels poinless to me to try and be better at someone else in something like games. The only time I like it is when I can play with people I somewhat know, or in a clan of some sort.

I do love co-op in various games though. But it's hard finding people to do that with. I don't know that many people who play a wide selection of games, and people online has usually completed the game already and won't bother letting me take in the full experience. (See Lemundes post)
One game I'd love to co-op through is Saints Row 2. But that has some major problems on quad core PCs.

I'm extremely competitive when it comes to games :P

The only thing I hate in mp games is when gear > skill. Which is the reason I don't like the competitive side of WoW. If some kid beats me because he spent hundreds of hours getting perfect gear and I didn't... I get really frustrated.

This is also the reason I don't like shooters with character leveling

I know what you mean spartan. Halo Reach has become so frustrating I hardly play it anymore. Mostly thanks to bloom and the crazy huge mutual kill window. Been times where I kill someone, their body and gun start to drop to the ground and then their gun goes off and hits me in the head.

And that's probably why you owned me when we played L4D2. :P

One of the main points of multiplayer is the adding of an unpredictable element with human behavior. Unfortunately, unpredictable elements frequently lead to frustration, when annoying things happen that you can do nothing about. Plus, the varying skill levels of players is like the game turning the difficulty way up or down without your permission. If you're going to play multiplayer, you'll inevitably have to get used to things not always going your way.

Of course, I say this as someone who almost never plays multiplayer of any kind. My contempt for people who think winning is important and the experience they bring to the table generally ensures that.

The only thing that frustrates me is the rollercoaster ride my skill seems to take when playing COD or KZ3. I always seem to go on really good streaks and then start svcking it up later on. There's no definite skill level for me.
I'm also extremely competitive with gaming, which is why it makes me so angry to lose and then hear the killer brag

I only find them annoying when I play with a group of whiny, immature brats. That's why I mostly play with friends only.

There's not really a whole lot of skill involved in WoW, is there? I mean, I might be wrong, but usually in games like WoW there is generally a PvE build and a PvP build. The decided factor usually IS gear, and you do need to take the time to acquire it. I never got into the PVP side of FFXI, but I always had people complain that my Monk was to strong, all the while being geared up in pure Auction House gear, and not even top of the line gear. Of course you're not going to do as well as me, I spent hundreds of hours farming for the top of the line gear because I was devoted to being the best Monk on the server. Course, in FFXI, it really is Gear > skill(though some may argue Gear and skill are equal), but I've never seen anyone argue Skill > Gear for it. I realize that WoW has various skill sets, but considering the length of time it's been out, I'd wager it's a safe bet that everyone knows what are good builds and what are bad ones, so again Gear > skill on the simple theory that everyone should be at roughly the same Skill level.

They can be kind of irritating at times, but at the point where I'm not having fun I just stop playing, no point in playing a game if its not fun. This is why I don't like games that lock you in to play [L4D, RTS games, etc..] with other people because I feel obligated to finish the game.

I do play on Vent with a guy who is absolutely convinced that he is at a distinct disadvantage from everyone else and that the game is out to get him. And while I do try to avoid playing competitive games with him [he's fine on PVE] he's like a parasite. He is also very annoying because he complains every single time he dies about how it isn't his fault and that they need to fix the game, I've even muted him a few times when I was on his team because I didn't feel like dealing with it. So please, OP, do not complain to other people. No one else cares why you died but you.

I've actually been playing Wipeout HD online since PSN came back up. Eliminator is pretty fun, and you don't need to communicate with anyone. Except with plasma bolts :hehe:

Not encountered any annoying techniques either, though i think my stalking and ambush tactics are the annoying ones :P

I've stopped playing shooters online, seeing as I'm only playing single players nowadays, fighting games are really the only games I go online on. And I find fighting games online to be more tense if anything.

I never finish playing online games in a good mood. Good play effects a good mood which makes me want to play on. A bad streak makes me rage quit. Ergo, sessions almost always end on a rage quit.

Yeah online games are like heroin. So awful but yet so, so good (I should imagine).

I rarely play multiplayer games since i don't think they are nearly as fun and definitely not as deep as a good single player game. When i do play multiplayer games, it's local. I am not very good at shooters and dies a lot which is part of the reason i rarely play them, it's not fun to lose. I am much better at fighting, sport, extreme sport and racing when it comes to multiplayer so that is what i mostly play.

I used to love online shooters in the early 2000s, but nowadays they're just not catered to skill. Even when i'm dominating everyone in games like MW2 or BC2 (which is often the case), it only takes a couple of deaths for me to get incredibly angry with how other people play.

Killstreak spam, nade spam, rocket spam, m60 rambo medics... ugh.

The only problem I have with multiplayer games is that there are other, y'know, players, that get in my way all the time. :whistling:

I'm too much of a control freak w/my games. But I do/did like the Diablo's random join game, run around like chickens w/strangers for 20 minutes, drop out of game, join another game, etc. model. No having to join factions, guilds, have to form a 50-man raid etc etc.
