Anyone else getting sick or dizzy playing Fallout 4?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 12:57 am

I had this before with Oblivion, but it went away. Happened to Skyrim as well but didn't last long. I am hoping it doesn't last long with Fallout 4 but I am getting dizzy and sick feeling when playing Fallout 4. I am doing what I can, play short periods of time, lots of lights on, stopped playing as I am tired.

I noticed it happens a lot when I am looking at the pip boy. Too much swaying for me. I am wondering if there is an option to disable this just in case I have missed it. If not, please PLEASE Bethesda, make it an option to turn the bobbing/swaying off for those who it effects us.

I am curious if this is happening to others, and if so what have you done besides what I have mentioned to help minimize this.

I'm curious, how does this happen? Is it motion sickness?

Something like that. I don't get motion sickness when I drive, but something like that. It's almost like a vertigo feeling, mixed in with dizziness and a bit pukey feeling.

As I said a lot happens when I am in pip boy and you see the screen swaying back and forth. So yeah that could be motion sickness there I guess.

*edit*

I know this could be signs of epilepsy, and I did talk to my doctor about this, and she says I don't have it. I know a lot of people have this, but curious if this effecting anyone else while playing Fallout 4.

Some people get motion sickness when playing FPS games that's why in the 90s western games never really took off and Elder Scrolls never became popular till they added in a broken 3rd person mode in Morrowind which was smaller than Daggerfall.

This game has a FOV that is used in OLD popular FPSs before gaming exploded into what it is today.

The FOV used is known to make people motion sick or vomit or feel ill for days, weeks or even a month.

For some people the FOV the game uses is like someone using binoculars strapped to someone's head but the person is running around with the binoculars strapped to their head well doing everything so yeah I don't know what Todd Howard was thinking.

I know he doesn't get third person mode and I know he comes from a time when Japanese games dominated the market because of this but this throw back in a popular AAA game was not a good idea

Interesting. I haven't noticed the Pip Boy screen swaying.

That is the auto-hypnotism feature that Bethesda installed into the game. Give it a few days. It will go away. (As will your bank account, most of your credit cards and all of your free will.)

Kidding. Actually, played since day one without problem but I've never, ever had motion sickness. Well, maybe a bit now that I start staring at your avatar ...

It's the head bob. Let's hope they add an option to turn that off.

I would have felt sick if I didn't change the World FOV, the Guns FOV and the mouse acceleration and the different mouse speed of Y axis vs X axis. I basically replaced the controler emulator that Bethesda (in their infinite wisdom) offered on launch with a proper mouse control.
I usually disable the head bobbing in games because it can cause me motion sickness ( and it's not really realistic anyway ), but so far 24 hours in and I'm fine with that.
I've been playing so damn much lol
Unfortunately I have to work the next couple of weeks *sigh*

Yeah, I changed the FOV as well. The default FOV seems more suited to non widescreen monitors. Game developers really should have a FOV slider in options.

I get it with some FPS games too. When I find a game that I get it with, I play for about an 1 - 1.5 hrs. Then I go lay down for 15-20 min & repeat. Once I get "used" to it I never have the problem with the game again.

I've found with some games it was the FoV being to narrow, inconsistent movement speeds.. I guess just the camera not behaving as I'd expect it to.

Few others have also posted about FOV while I was typing this but if you think it would help you, it can be modified in the Fallout4.ini file.

fDefaultWorldFOV=70

fDefault1stPersonFOV=80

What is this default FOV (Field of View)? I am on the Xbox One. Is this a PC option?

*edit* I see Delaradra comment. Yeah I guess it's a PC option. So what can we do for the Xbox One?

I'm becoming a broken record on this issue :P

It's most likely the head bob and/or the narrow FOV. I've made a thread asking the devs to give us an option to turn the head bob off (see my sig).

I've also tweeted Pete Hines and some of the Bethesda twitter accounts but as yet I've had no response.

I think I just read your post. I had to turn the bobbing off in Daggerfall I believe. Can't remember if Morrowind had that option or not as well. Here is hoping that Bethesda will put it in their next patch. I don't recall Pete Hines or Bethesda ever answering our questions so I don't think we will get an answer. If anything depending on when you sent your question, it's the weekend now, so it's their time off, so don't expect anything on the weekend. After all they need family/me time.

Also love your avatar. Can't remember the name, but that is the villain in Battle of the Planets right?

Do you have a smartphone or tablet? As a workaround, you can use the pipboy app instead of looking at the in-game pipboy.

FOV is generally only a problem if your monitor is close by - apparently the narrower view is "correct" when you're sitting on a couch looking at your TV across the room.

Yeah. Even sitting at a desk, I'd never noticed FOV problems on my old computer - but it was 1680x1050. When I moved to a regular 1080 HD monitor, I suddenly understood the complaints people had been making. :P

I like the lower FOV compared to higher ones, those make me sick. I might even want it a bit lower than it is. I might try it on my PC. I use a 24 inch 1080p HD monitor/TV for both PC and Xbox One.

I think everyone will have different thresholds on what is right for them.

I am surprised I am not getting dizzy or migraines with Depth of View. Maybe that is what is effecting you.

As for Head Bob I have not noticed any and usually those get me sick. Maybe I do not get it since I am walking for the most part and sometimes jogging (No Ap) I never sprint/run (AP)

I've never gotten motion sickness from a video game, and rarely get motion sickness in a vehicle...until Fallout 4. Now, for me, it wasn't full motion sickness - no nausea, just some slight dizziness and feeling a touch light-headed. Nothing that would prevent me from playing or anything, and I was never in danger of "losing my lunch". But I will say, it is an odd feeling to have...from a video game.

Have you tried the Pip-Boy app? That way you can have it running on a (stable) tablet right next to you. It might help.

Oh yeah, been so long I forgot.

You are not alone. :P

Yes I do, Will have to try it out. Thank you.

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand what everyone is talking about.

No I didn't. Just found out from the above poster mentioned. I thought it was only for the actual pip boy that goes on your arm. Will try it out and see how it goes.

I've posted the same thing a few times. All the shadow flickering, head bobbing, pip-boy blurring and weaving... yes, it is making me physically ill playing the game. In order to keep from having a $65 coaster for my coffee cup and wasted early Christmas present, I bought Dramamine. Go figure, huh? I've played games since computers started with the original Bard's Tale on a Commodore and Fallout 4 is the ONLY game that has made me sick playing it.

I've never had motion sickness from cars, I love rollercoasters, horseback riding ect. I've played video games my whole life and I'm old now, lol. The last year or so I started getting this. I noticed it from a raid I was doing in an mmo. I got really dizzy and nauseous.

Ginger helps. I like ginger ale, just make sure it's one that is really ginger in the ale. An over the counter medication is dramamine. Though it either is not helping, or makes it worse for me, I'm not sure which.

I haven't noticed any head bob at all, although I'm not sensitive to motion so if it's really subtle maybe I just don't notice.

To the OP: do you have DoF/motion blur on? That might be stuff to turn off if you're susceptible to motion sickness. Or turn the mouse-sensitivity down so you aren't spun around as quickly when moving/turning/fighting.

I've been sadly unable to change the FOV in FO4...even via the .ini files. It either makes no difference or the game resets it after about 5 seconds - even with the .ini's set to read-only. >.>
