Anyone Else Gonna Play A Dead Is Dead Game?

Most likely yes, at *some* point. :D (closer to 2013 I believe)

I've been working my imagination to death over the backstories and the (in game) direction of my characters. There's no way in Hades I'm gonna just let my character get killed off.

So if you die after 15 hours of gameplay, you just restart without finishing the game?

Yep. When the character dies, they're dead. No second chances, no reloading (excepting for game bugs and crashes and stuff). When you die, the character is dead as a doornail, and you start over with a new character.

It teaches you to be a lot more cautious and prepared when going out into the world, and to be less Rambo when you know you're not invincible through the magic of savegames. It's a test of endurance in a way, how long you can go without making a fatal mistake, which some people find fun.

Seems like a lot of fun actually, though it can be extremly frustrating. But it would definatly make you take every fight serriously, which is a good thing ofc. And i imagine myself running from almost every single Dragon i see, unless i have lotsa potions, and bein very confident.

Guess i will give it a try after i've played through a couple of times :)

So let me get this straight:

  • You've reached the end of the MQ storyline.
  • You finally face Alduin.
  • You're a Level 50+.
  • You've acquired a decent amount of wealth.
  • You've unlocked almost all, if not all, the dragon shouts (which is no easy feat).

And then you die during the battle with Alduin. You start over with a new character?
There's a point where 'hardcoe/realism' should have its limits. I don't think ANYONE
could consciously start over after they've reached that point.

Edit: or it's safe to say that no one will get past the level 20 or anywhere near the end of the MQ storyline or acquire all (IF ANY) dragon shouts with this form of gameplay.

Maybe after a few characters when I do some intense role-playing as a Nord. :toughninja:

I will most likely do this down the road. Once i have tested my limits in each category and figured the game out. I feel like otherwise I would get too conservative and almost never leave the cities or something, not take risks, such as fighting a dragon...

Yeah, i agree on that. If i pass a certain point, regarding the story, lvl, wealth etc. I wont start over after getting killed, i can come clean about that.

"What? No, that one didn't count, it was clearly a game glitch! The buggy game wasn't responding to my controls! I clearly killed that thing and the game didn't register it! If it had been working right I clearly wouldn't have died!"

Actually, I never play "Dead is Dead" but I always try to see how far I can get before I die the first time. I just don't start over when I finally do bite the big one.

I have, however, played something of a hybrid with self-imposed death penalty rules. Every time I gained a level, I would create a named save in the console and any time I died I would have to go back to my last named save. That created the incentive to stay alive at all costs (unless I had just leveled) to avoid losing hours of play but not losing my whole game. This was Oblivion with OOO which slowed experience gain to about 1/4th normal so leveling took some time.

Nope, but that's the only consequence (aside from bugs, of course) that I plan to reload my save for. Whether I mess up a quest, get expelled from a faction, or get caught murdering, I don't plan on reloading any saves.

If I were to ever try a real DID game, it would be after I had already played most of the game's content and the DID character would stick to ground I had already played. Once I start an unplayed quest line (whether main quest or one of the guild quests lines), I'm going to finish it. I won't walk away from one I've played three quarters of only to have to do that three quarters again with another character just to see how it ends.

exactly. i had never done it before but then a DID thread for fallout new vegas popped up and i decided to give it a shot. its actually alot of fun. its the closest you will get to getting into a real life fight. you tend to treat every enemy seriously instead of just nonchalanty whizzing through like you do in a normal game cause you know you can just reload and it makes for a much more intense game overall. its simply cant be duplicated in a normal save/load game. its actually kind of addicting.

there are exceptions of course for things like bugs or getting killed because you got stuck in some geometry or something else. but i you died because of something you did then you have to start over. :) i highly recommend everyone try this at least once.

edit: you can start over you just cant reload your existing character

I might try this after my first several times through the game. I can definitely see where it'd be addictive, but I want to experience the whole of the game before I start putting limitations on myself.

;)

At the very least you should be able to load a save from the very beginning of the game so you don't have to suffer through character creation everytime you die. Who wants to spend an hour of char gen on a DID game?

One of the lighter variations that people do is, instead of scraping the character when you die, you go back to the last save you made when you slept at an Inn. So, regardless of where you've gone or what you did, if you die you go back to when you last had a good rest and pretend it was a dream. Failing quests or making a non-fatal mistake is not grounds for reload.

The same idea is there, to challenge you and make you cautious about encounters because dying will undo all the stuff you've done recently, but you don't have to start over from the beginning.

Sounds like a plan. Will only play this style. It is great fun. Dead is dead. It does make you think more, and makes you more anxious, and also can raise your blood pressure when you've played for fifty hours and then accidentally fall too far.

Yes, I'm playing dead is dead in Skyrim, just like I do in Oblivion, and just like we all used to back when we played D&D and all those ridiculous tabletop games years ago. The only exception to this is if my character dies due to some sort of game glitch or if I get distracted by my daughter or something.

but the way I am going to do it is start Skyrim with a "generic Nord barbarian" type who I'm hoping I won't get too attached to. He'll go into the world of Skyrim, probably get killed at some point, and I'll start someone else. When I get more confident with the game, I'll try a character whom I'll put more depth into.

I'm wanting to do a Xena-type warrior character at some points, along with a few other ideas, but all these other characters are gonna wait until I feel like they're ready. But they'll all be "dead is dead". I don't mind reloading Lara Croft's game if she dies in Tomb Raider, but in an RPG, it feels like it cheapens the game if I reload a fair death.
