Anyone else got bored of Fallout 3 easily?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:40 am

I played several years non stop for Morrowind. Oblivion lasted several months but only after installing over 100 quality mods. Fallout 3 lasted me less than a week. Another week after installing a number of mods and I have to say there's not a lot to choose from, probably because when you remove the fantasy element, a lot of quest mods are ruled out.

Now I only play Fallout 3 once in a while, and only because of Real-Time Settlers New Wave mod. There's nothing in vanilla Fallout 3 I found fun. Fallout 3 lacked the epic play one time storyline like Witcher 1&2, yet didn't have decent repeatable quests to make a decent open ended game.

Well its a shame to hear. I've played over 200h on the vanilla version and I'm having more fun than ever. Completed the quest 'following in his footsteps' last night with only a missile launcher. I thought that was pretty effin epic.
But it's obviously not the game for you, maybe New Vegas quests will satisfy you more as their is more depth and choices to them.

Sounds like you are more of a quest type of player which is Fallout 3's weakest suit. One of the reasons I think Fallout 3 remained so replayable for me was because I loved the atmosphere and the "exploration" element. The quests were okay, but definitely not the reason I continue to play it to this day.

Mods are also a great means of extending play life. Have you checked out any quest mods for Fallout 3 yet?

I do nowadays. That's mostly because I played several different playthroughs and after I became used to the gameplay improvements from New Vegas.

I would have loved the world more if it wasn't for the D.C. area and constant recycling of metro and power stations.

I feel the same way, I spend a lot of time just wandering and collecting goods to survive and what not. And I still have a lot of fun with it.

I agree it sounds like it. That and Fallout and Fallout 2.

It took me along time to get bored of Fallout 3. I bought it when it came out and lost intrest in it when New Vegas was announced.

This, it has tons of quests that you will probably enjoy.

I suprise myself by still not being bored of F3 even thought I've done every quest a dozen times, have seen the outcome of every quest a dozen times, and have fought every enemy thousands of times.

That;s me as well. It's the atmosphere and exploration that keep me comming back to Falout 3. It isn't that Falout 3's quests are necesarily bad, thay just aren't anything spectacular. The atmos[here is definatly FO3's greatest strength, and I never seem to get board of exploring the Capitol Wasteland. New Vegas had some great quests but the atmosphere is definatly lacking, and once I've finished the quests I evevidly get boared and go back to FO3.

I've played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of Fallout 3 and I'm still playing it (first on PS3, then on 360 and now on PC).

Like others, I'm hooked on the free roaming exploration and atmosphere. New Vegas has a much stronger narrative structure and writing but there's just something about the Fallout 3's vibe that resonates with me.

I definitely take extended breaks from it, though. And I likely wouldn't be playing it now if I couldn't mod it.

See its the exact opposite for me. I love the DC area and the metros (missed them in New Vegas, although the sewer system is similar).

Like I said, just might not be your cup of tea, nothing wrong with that.

I would love to try this game out but it resembles Morrowind and Oblivion too much for me to make that deep dive I want to. I′m not that sure about all the dead areas and whatnot either so I think I′ll stick with previously mentioned games ;)

Nice to see you on this side of the forums. If your not interested in Fallout 3 then give New Vegas a try or even the originals.

why are you even bothering with bethesda games since they aren't fun to you? there's lots of other games to try out.

If you'll notice the beginning of his comment he said that he played Morrowind for several years and Oblivion for several months. He has also said that he has played the Witcher 1 and 2 which leads me to believe that he has played other games.

At first, I thought it did too. But after a bit, I saw the difference. Of course, it's by the same company, but there is a more tongue-in-cheek feel. FO3 feels like a true spaghetti western to me.

I can't even remember how many times I have played FO3 must be around 10-15 times now. The exploration is what makes it fun for me the quests were good but not the best it could have been. I will more then likely play FO3 again once Fallout 4 is officially announced and we get some info on it. Until then I'm saving it

I didn't get bored with FO3 easily at all. In fact I just purchased the GOTY version a few weeks back because I wanted to play the Broken Steel dlc. I'm playing Point Lookout right now.

Tripping on the big punga tree!

A rather corny question, is it any good then? Is it enjoyable or just boring with all the death and destroyed areas?

Why would that be a corny question?
Well.. I must say that, as a long time Fallout-fan and http://www.nma-fallout.com/-hang around, that Bethesda are really good at making rubble and destroyed buildings. There's junk items everywhere.
Vanilla FO3 did get a bit boring and depressing for me the first time I played it, because you spend so much time crawling through junk in destroyed buildings and metro stations. Occasionally you crept through junk in some abandoned vault. Doesn't help that the sky is covered in grey clouds and that there's a grayish green tint everywhere. Thankfully there's a whole set of mods that cleans up The Capital Wasteland and adds greener vegetation & trees, which makes the game feel less depressive. The game is set 200 years after the war so the wasteland should have been reclaimed by some kind of forest, although the radiation and inhabitants would still be as dangerous. I used the mod GreenWorld or something like that but that was years ago so perhaps there are better mods now. There's also a mod called Fellout that clears up the weather.

The DLCs also offer quite a bit of diversity in the environments over the base game.
At higher levels everyone gets ridiculously amounts of health; even unmutated humans shrug of several rifle head shots without being moderately injured.
Thankfully there are mods that remedy that as well.

Thanks for the info! I normally wouldn′t want to be told anything about a game I′m about to play but in this and Morrowind′s case I don′t mind as I still see Oblivion as my main game to delve into.

Those mods you mentioned, can you link me to them perhaps? I′d be very grateful  Oh, and does the PC version require Steam in any way?

Fallout 3 mods can be found http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/downloads/top/alltime.php. The PC version didn't need Steam when I installed and I doubt its changed since then, it does use Games for Windows though.

After about 3 or 4 playthroughs is when I start to get bored of FO3, it's the same with FNV as well. I move on and play some other games and then come back to FO3/FNV after a month or so, just to keep them from getting completely dull. Mods help a lot with subsequent playthroughs.

@mirocu - Do browse through the Fallout 3 Modding forums as there are quite a few threads regarding what mods to get or recommended mods. Or start your own thread there, the modding forums may be on their death bed but a few of us still post there :)
