Anyone else hate Boone?

Give Arcade Gannon gauss rifle and you don't have to lift a finger ever again...

Or the Q-35 to Veronica.
Or a modded Sniper Rifle to Boone.

But Roni will wear Brotherhood T-51b with that plasma rifle, and she may complain about going ranged, but she's GOOD at it!

I hate him.
No fun.
Useless in combat (imo).
Boring piece of sad [censored].
I recruited him once, I had him for 5 hours.
At Khans village I just went: "No, no no no NO! [censored] YOU BOONE! [censored]!! YOUU!!! I'M SO TIRED OF YOU SAD PATHETIC MACHO MAN ATTITUDE!!"
I then proceeded to cut his limbs off and recruit Arcade instead.
I seriously don't see the appeal to him really.
I don't want every companion to be a bucket of fun but Boone had no freaking personality other than *gravely voice* [mutters something and most like whines] *gravely voice*.
And I seriously don't care about his backstory "that" much that I'm going to have him with me to 5 random history spots just so I can get to his redeeming backstory.

I'm sorry, I'm a transcended emo, so the tortured hurting soldier thing really did it for me. :D
Physically, I could take it or leave it. Arcade is much more my type in regards to that.

But.. I hate to say it, but I'm rubbish at this game. Awfull, crap, rubbish rubbish rubbish!
So for me, having someone insanely overpowered and creepily protective keeping an eye out for me (perception:2) is great.

I dont think Boone has ever wanted to be 'loved' by the charecter, ever. [censored], maybe. But never loved.

I think OP is somewhat jealous of the big strong man with the tradgic past who despite his inner demons is still a hell of a shot with whatever weapon you happen to force into his hands.

And as LadyCrimson showed recently, for a big man he certainly can fly quite high

/Still finds it a bit weird when Boone stands by the door watching when I do a hoker

I don't care that he hates Legion.
I can still side with House, NCR and Yes Man as I like to roleplay, so having someone KOS Legion is not a problem for me.
It's how the character is written that bugs me to no end.

Ah Old Passive/Aggressive Emo Boy. He's such a bummer. If I have him with me, I need to have Plucky Little ED-E along to balance out..

Raul had hard times, and he didn't go all goth on the world.

To each their own I guess.

Yeah well Raul has had 200 years to grieve, we can assume that Boone's wife wasn't taken all that long ago; so glad people can relate to having to put down their wife and child to the point where they can just dismiss Boone as 'emo'.

THANKYOU! So sick of people calling Boone angsty and goth just because his wife got stolen and potentially [censored] repeatedly by a huge army of slaving thugs.
Its not like he's writing poetry about it, cutting himself, or breaking down in tears. He's doing what a man would do and getting on with his existence by wiping out every single [censored] responsible for his loss.
And if OP had taken any time speaking to Boone, it would be very clear Boone isnt trying to attention [censored], very much the opposite. He makes it clear he doesent want to talk about the past, and only does so after alot of pursuasion and if you agree to sleep with him at Bitter Springs.

All in all, Boones story was one of the most gripping of the companions thus far.

If you put a normal green Beret in Boone's inventory en take his 1st Recon Beret he doesn't say anything.

And it you take the green Beret of him "I'd really like my beret back, pretty please with sugar on top"

He's dom.

Oh I see...that's a very interesting interpretation of spending the night with Boone on Coyote Tail Ridge. I always thought we were just on watch...maybe that was naive. I'll think about that in a whole new way the next time we're there but I think we'll just stay on watch until the situation is resolved. :) Great post, btw...it's exactly right.

Well of course it's sad about what happened to him and his wife but it hardly makes me want to carry that sad [censored] around so he can shoot and miss stuff.
The pain he bears I cannot connect with, I haven't had what happened to him happen to me, so it's impossible for me to feel what he feels.
So while I can try to sympathize with him it's not what I have in mind when playing Fallout, I want companions that bring a little more likable personality as I explore the cultures of the post apocalyptic lands.
I don't want to have that grumpy, psychopathic, sadistic [censored] to follow me around when I'm trying to enjoy Fallout. :disguise:

But yeah, simply calling him 'emo' isn't exactly fair to his backstory, personality and pain he bears.
It's still fun to slaughter him as a legionnaire to avenge that a fine slave was shot dead though.

Calling Boone emo isn't something I do. I just call him a repressive and depressive person, it's depressing having him in my party. I prefer smart mouths like Raul and Arcade. At least they make quips. Pretty sure if I elbowed Boone and made a joke, he'd just go *Silence* *Gravelly voice* That's not funny, I want to kill Legion. Let's go. *Silence* :shakehead:

To me he's of a follower archetype psyche, I posted this awhile back he really is just a machine when you meet him.
From his childhood best friend, millitary career, wife than you all he's done is follow orders and not thought for himself.
Add in that when he finally breaks this pattern for the first time it leads to his current dominant personality and unborn child being killed and paranioa setting in towards everyone else close to him.
His whole quest is about healing him or at least setting him off towards his own goals.
I think looking at it like this at least explains the writting and reactions he gives.

Myself I don't take him often as he rarely fits my style or character role.
I don't like him but don't dislike him, he has a dark shroud vibe going and tortured vibe but given it's one companion only.
Compared to ones like DA:2 where everyone is dark and tortured it at least mixes up the choice of personalities.. Vicky, Cass, Raul, Lily, Arcade, Boone. you have a nice selection of traits and outlooks.

Thus the caveat of to each their own. I don't fault anyone liking Boone. For someone who finds comforting a tortured soul attractive he's a great companion. To someone like myself who has a more balanced outlook on life and loss, Raul is more pleasant to travel with. Boone is just too much emotional baggage.

I will give him one credit, he seems to be the first Fallout character that so many female players fantasize about..... you go Boone.

And that obnoxious belief of a really dark fate already set in stone for him is agitating, mainly because I'm one of those 'A man carves his own fate and destiny' people.

If you want someone cheery and full of fun, there's plenty of other options, such as Lilly or Raul, both of whom have plenty of sass.
Some could say that Cass was boring for the same reasons, allways moody and getting drunk and generally [censored]ing about her life?
I think it's all about the fighting spirit, both Cass and Boone have been through alot, and they still get up and fight every day.

The way I see it, Boone's fatalism comes from his belief in Karma and what goes around, comes around. Because of what happened at Bitter Springs, because he didn't think for himself, he feels a paralyzing guilt that prevents him from moving forward. The Courier helps him with all of that, to find a new purpose, a way to go on with life because there *is* a reason to keep on going. The loss of a wife and child is huge and I'd think that each person playing the game could identify with how they felt about a huge loss...compassion and empathy are key. And if someone is lucky enough so far in life to have never experienced huge loss, maybe Boone's loss scares them because it's so huge and so they hate him.

I find it immensely satisfying to help him through his demons...just as I find it satisfying to help people in many quests in FNV. That's the part I enjoy. :) In the end, with the Courier's help and nudging in the right direction, Boone picks *himself* up and goes on, as does Raul. I just think life should be that way....with us all helping each other. awwww. There you go and I think it's great writing. :)

And Boone isn't the only one. The Courier helps all of the companions.

I think Boone and Veronica have probably the best backstory of all companions.
Their also the two most devastatingly efficicient companions.
(humanoid anyways, my ED-E just beasts everyone, but, maybe a glitch i'm thinking)

Not really getting why people are calling him emo tbh.
The guy never actually wants to talk, thats not 'emo' thats just dark.

Tortured soul doesn't really = emo.
Thats just a cop-out excuse for people who don't like him for 'other reasons'....

But of course thats just my opinion.

And as LadyCrimson showed recently, for a big man he certainly can fly quite high

Fly? What? I did?
and only does so after alot of pursuasion and if you agree to sleep with him at Bitter Springs.

I don't think I would have interpreted that bit like that either. Kind of funny. :D

I don't like him but don't dislike him, he has a dark shroud vibe going and tortured vibe but given it's one companion only.

Haven't played DA:2, but I agree that it's nice/important for a game to have varied mix of companion "types." I luv Boone but if they'd all been like him...well, that would have been boring/silly.

I find it interesting how much Boone's voice seems to bother people. I personally find Veronica's voice extremely aggravating - at least her short constant perks & shouts (the long dialogues aren't bad). It's not what she says, it's the tone. Like a screechy, breathy girl-child. high-pitched, squeally voices grate on my nerves and always have. Couldn't say why, just does. It's amazing how much, on a personal level, tone and cadence etc. of a voice can influence us (in different ways). Like music.

--------------------------
So if you don't like Boone's gravelly, gruff, low voice, well...he could've sounded like this:
http://crimsonkeep.com/downloads/sounds/boone-tohellwith-1TV.mp3 :D (oh great the forum censor kills the word in my file name, too. Hahah - had to pick another one)

2nd edit: http://crimsonkeep.com/downloads/sounds/boone-bullcoward-1TV.mp3 <--- there's the one I initially posted, changed the file name

I believe that's Jason Marsden's (Boone's VO) voice, from an early test recording or something, before filtering/enhancement. There's a bunch "hidden" in the game's sound files.

Also, imagine if Vulpes had sounded like...Cliff Briscoe!
http://crimsonkeep.com/downloads/sounds/Vulpes-in-Cliffs-Voice-1DVO.mp3

As much as I hate the Legion, I wish there was at least one companion that didn't mind them because I had to do my Legionarre with Ed-E and no humanoid companion. (Lily gets in my way).

I mention that because it's the only thing I dislike about NV's stock of companions. All that aside, it's still much better than FO3, where they were a hindrance.
As for Boone; he's my favored companion (Not favorite, mind you. I think Veronica takes that honor), because he's accurate and never gets in my way. Sure, he one shots things. But when I've got that Anti-Everything rifle, so do I.
I didn't get the "Woe is me" vibe. Hell, he doesn't even TALK about what ails him until you travel with him for a bit. Which I found realistic about all the companions in general. He didn't lay out his life story on a whim, which defies the so called stereotype a bit.
