Anyone else hate Boone?

Post » Sun Sep 12, 2010 5:25 pm

Honestly, I love the companions in New Vegas, and the DLC. Each one brings something unique to the table, and I would've loved to take more than one at a time with me. Arcade, Cass, Veronica AND Raul? Yes please!

But... I really, really dislike Boone. On my latest playthrough, I thought I'd give him another chance, but... no. Instead I abandoned him at the top of Black Mountain, and promptly took Raul instead.

I think what it is, it's that he seems to have all the worst traits of so-called "cool" characters. For example!
1. He's overpowered. He'll 1-shot kill things before you even SEE them. And with the slow-motion killcam, this is pretty annoying! Plus, a sniper? The guy's a 13-year old Halo fan's dream come true.
2. He's a dark, tortured soul. The dude is frickin' Lestat. Or, like, Edward Cullen. "Oh noes! Woe is me! I had to kill my own wife instead of rescuing her! Life is hard! LOVE MEEEE!"
3. To top it all off, he's got an awful, stereotypical "badass" voice. All gravelly and harsh. He shoulda been a ghoul with a voice like that. I get it, he's trying to be all tough, but he just comes off as obnoxious.

Frankly, he would've been more interesting if he was a raging Jet-head. Gravelly voice and not sleeping? Yeeeah, you're not THAT traumatised.

You can turn off the Slow-mo camera.
If he always one-shot kills then up the difficulty.
Why can't a character be sad anymore? I've also never seen him be all "LOVE MEEE!" as you claim.

A thing I find absolutely hilarious about his voice is that it's the same voice actor who did the voice for Myron in Fallout 2.

Tisk...Tisk...(complain)

He had to kill his wife he never wants you to love him he pretty much wants to be left alone.

If you give him a service rifle he will take it.

Furthermore hes one of my favorite companions and he is bad ass.

Why should I up the difficulty to compensate for an overpowered character? No other companion has this problem for me.

Anyway, I was merely expressing my opinion. Sorry to offend you.

No, I don't hate Boone. hehehe ;)

But I know gabs here does, and in the long ago past, there were plenty of others who didn't like his tortured soul/psychotic "personality" - or whatever other description people who dislike him have.

I'd agree with this in general concept. I don't interpret Boone's nature as needy attention seeking at all.
Nor do I care if he has a stereotypical gravelly voice, since almost everything in the world today is a stereotype of something else. If one doesn't like an entertainment stereotype, that doesn't make it not effective for other people. I love war movies/novels so...y'know, I like that stereotype. :P

People like different things. No one has to like Boone...or any other companion for that matter. :D

I tried to give him a chance but he always struck me as boring and monotonous, and with a pretty lame story. It might have been tolerable if he wasn't such a curmudgeon. I gave him to the White Glove Society on a few playthroughs and it made me feel a little better, but these days even that isn't worth the effort and I usually just kill him for the beret.

All human companions are overpowered if you give them half way decent equipment for their tag skills. imo.
I've never found Rex or EDE to be OP'd tho, even with upgrades. Especially Rex. The non-humans are good for people who want less powerful+a mule. ;)

*Walks out of tent at camp Golf* Oh yeah I know the guy your talking about, Craig Boone right? Its a real sad story with what happened with his wife and all, but when you do hear the full story about what went down with her being kidnapped by the Legion and all and then him having to shoot her, its hard not to fell bad for the guy. Plus when you factor in that whole unfortunate incident at Bitter Springs its pretty easy to see why he has so many emotional scars.
But you know I have to say this about him, there isn't any other sniper i'd rather have watchin my back when im going after a Legion patrol than that guy, hell sometimes he'll take out half of them before I can even get off a single shot, he's really just that good. Hell of a loyal guy too, to his country and his friends.

Boone? It's not that I hate him. If I hated him, I wouldn't let him hang out at the 38. He just doesn't make as many funny 'skull splattering' noises as Veronica does.

Ah Old Passive/Aggressive Emo Boy. He's such a bummer. If I have him with me, I need to have Plucky Little ED-E along to balance out..

Raul had hard times, and he didn't go all goth on the world.

To each their own I guess.

Not me. Lady Crimson is right; no one has to like any companion but Boone is my favorite and I'll tell you why. :)

He's the companion who doesn't complain. When you ask him to carry something, he says, "Fine by me."
If you ask him to wait, he says he'll sit tight. When you ask him to follow again, he'll tell you he's got your back. He always has my back and takes good care of me, the best sniper buddy anyone could ever have. If I don't want him to shoot everything he sees that threatens me, I leave him to wait at the Safehouse and head out alone or with ED-E.

I found his personal story compelling and when you help him deal with his problems, he thanks you and he's not the same person you met in Dinky. It's a different guy.

The voice is Jason Marsden and I became a big fan after travelling around with Boone for 7 games and what must be close to 1,000 hours with his voice since last October. So I guess I'm just the opposite from what you're feeling but I'd say to give him a chance. If you're not on a PC with the Craig Boone Warn Fix mod, you're also not seeing the real Boone. There's a problem in his script that causes him to keep holstering his weapon, losing his headtracking and switching to melee when you want him to be ranged. It's a whole different Boone combat-wise with the mod that fixes him.

Really, all the companions are great depending on the build you've got going with each one. :)

His story and backround are cliché, I'll give you that.

Still doesn't change the fact that he's one of the most in-depth and involved characters, story-wise. Arcade, Boone and Cass have far more unique lines and interaction than the others, Raul has a decent amount of commentary but no much story, and Lily and Veronica just kinda stand there.

I wished he was overpowered in my game. All he does in combat for me is draw his rifle, shoots it once or twice, and holster it. Then does it all over again.

On the bright side his quest is the best of all the followers. Holding off a two prong Legion assault without getting shredded by all the hunting rifles is a highlight of the game.

Could you be so kind as to tell me the name of that mod you use? I'd be very interested in getting him straightened out, tactically... he's one of my favorite companions, too. What i miss most when I don't have him around, is the target highlighting, 'spotting'. I'm a night hawk, and it makes it much easier to see and hit stuff in the dark. I also use the Fellout graphical improvements mod, which makes the nights much darker than the default. Double-good reason to have Mr. Boone around!

Give him a Sniper Rifle. That and each time you load the game, go to the companion wheel, switch him to melee, then switch back to his gun. That usually fixes all weird behavior for me.

In my opinion, the two most overpowered companions are:

Boone with .308 JSP ammo and a sniper.
Raul (Vaquero) with a Brush gun and .45-70 Gov't SWC ammo.

Boone fires VERY fast with the sniper rifle and Raul will just tears [censored] up with a Brush Gun. I actually think Raul one shots just about everything with that setup, and with the Vaquero perk he'll shoot fast too.

I like him. Haven't used him yet on this playthrough, even though I'm an NCR Sniper. I'm interested to see how it's gonna go.

You should get him it would be like a NCR recon sniper team. You can go in the fort and take out Caeser.

Absolutely. It's the Craig Boone Warn Fix at this link.

I'm told it's also included in a community bugfix patch but that was before the latest official patch and I only needed this little mod so I didn't get the bigger one. It's very simple and shouldn't interfere with anything. I have this mod and the latest official patch and Boone is fine now. I'm hoping the next official patch has this fix so he'll be working again on my PS3 version of FNV.

As for his perks, I've always played with Boone and ED-E so it's like their perks are permanently mine now. I also use an Unlimited Companions mod but really, 2 or 3 is enough or it gets crowded. Arcade is another favorite but I have a hard time letting Raul go too so I usually end up with 4. :) Good luck!

Here's the Unlimited Companioins mod I use and it never causes problems either but I don't have the DLC and he has a notice up that it doesn't work well with Dead Money.
