I've actually got 5 or 6 handwritten pages of character backstory and blueprints.

I could post some of it if you wanna read it!

Just go with it. If the sword looks cooler than the bow then use that, in-game descisions will just be decided by what I think I would do.

Playthrough 2 is where it starts getting real fun! :twirl:

For the most part. I tend not to come up with detailed backgrounds or plans for which skills I want to focus on. I tend to just say "Ok, this character has these sorts of motivations and goals and beliefs and principles. Now GO". The skills take care of themselves.

I'll likely spend my first five hours playing just making new characters over and over.

Fortunately or unfortunately, my 1st playthough is definitive: a Nord Pure Warrior, following my tradition in Morrowind and Oblivion. After that, I have some ideas, but we'll see...

All I've got is "female" and "good".

(can't pick race until I see what they look like & how they're defined; can't decide what weapons & style I'll like until I see how the new combat system performs; and I've never written up background or anything like that.)

I actually plan on just playing my first character "as it goes" not really planning anything just making natural decisions and seeing how the character comes together. After my first play through I will focus on a more...focused...build. :)

It all depends on character customization and what more is revealed about the game; ie. fighting styles, combat, quests, etc. I want my character to be someone I look up to, and I would like the game to be able to accommodate the characteristics of that character. One of the first characters I see coming to mind for me is http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5CWw4_SWZAU/TdZxn4ceswI/AAAAAAAAADc/VyQMi33CLZw/s1600/6a00e54fb7301c88340120a7740696970b-800wi.jpg and judging by the way fighting styles and combat are, Spartacus might be possible in terms of appearance and fighting styles. Some people might want to play as anyone ranging from the Adoring Fan to Gandalf, and it all depends on how the game can accommodate the appearances and styles of those characters, for me at least.

The fact of the matter is that every single person has a favourite type of character, whether they know it or not, whether they plan it or not. Even if you decide to play "on the fly" you will still subliminally strive for your preference. Most of us just know our favourite builds by now and can thus plan ahead. :spotted owl:

I've planned a Nord outdoorsman-type character who uses a Dagger-Shortsword combo for close range engagements, and a longbow for long range, light armor, and smithing (Assuming that includes leatherwork/light armor crafting).

Pointless to begin planning a character when you don't know what the game even entails.

Probably a Nord warrior of some sort. I don't know if he will be a pure warrior or if there will be some magic thrown in for fun. Beyond that I am not sure. I don't even have a name picked out. I never plan a back story for my characters. I just play the game the way I want and see what happens.

You sir, are a die hard RPGer :foodndrink:

I have a general back story (nothing like a D&D backstory), but I'll see what the game is like before I decide what skills to rely on.

I play on the fly as Beth made it that you don't need to pick skills anymore. But I know I will fall back into old habits with skills (considering how I played previous ES games). Means: starting as a stealth character and turning to magic later, or vice versa. Warrior will be unlikely at the beginning.
€: -I see my mistake there: you can' start as a thief/mage/warrior any more. So I tend to raise thief-skills in the beginning mixing it with magic after some time.

I have a broad idea of what I may want to do, which will of course change as more details are revealed and I think about it more. As it stands now, I don't have enough information to make an assumption about how I'll actually do, especially CharGen wise.

I have multiple different character ideas but nothing set. Well asides from playing a Nord first just because it's Skyrim, thinking of going for a Thor type character, warhammers, maces and destruction magic with emphasis on shock/frost spells. Plus the thunderstorm shout is just too perfect for a Thor based character :D

I plan on being a straight up Nord sword-swinging shield-bashing warrior, like I was in Oblivion. The difference this time is that I think I might use bows to open up combat and to fight dragons when they are flying, I'm only thinking of doing this because the class system is gone. i always found that in order to be a good warrior i always used all seven skills on combat skills.

I have a small thought of backstory that I made when i was bored, but it's not written down. As for non combat decisions, I'll probably handle like i do in other games, that is that my character's kind of a jerk, but he won't endager innocents and will always try to save/help/protect them..... unless they're total douchebags

I have learned from long years of experience that I personally will never be able to decide on my first character beforehand. Here's how it generally works out. I create a character who I want to become an assassin. Create the character and start playing, after about 3-4 hours into the game, I really want to see how the magic system works, so I start over with a mage character. After about 3-4 hours, I will have done some quest or other that required me to make a decision in a particular way and I will want to know how it might have changed if I had done it differently. Now I don't want to ruin my characters role... so I will create another character to go through the game making the opposite decisions. Then I will want to start sneaking around again.... However, at this point I have learned a bit more how the game mechanics work and will want different perks from my assassin... so instead of re-loading my very first character, I will create a new one.

I have REALLY tried to play a very first character through a game, but it never really even comes close. After about 5 or 6 tries, I find myself finally immersed in a character and HOPEFULLY the storyline and feel of the game and will carry that character through to the end. Then once I have finished once, I can proceed with some of the other character types without feeling the need to switch so much.
