Anyone Else Not Planning Out Their Character?

Post » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:11 am

Since I'm going solo and planning on taking it slow, easy and enjoying the game, I thought I'd avoid planning out every detail of my character. I mean, I'm thinking Bosmer/Breton/Khajiit Nightblade but I don't want to go further than that becasue I'm thinking ... just roleplay and live the game.

I've done this in every other TES title I've owned and it's worked very well. Sure, I might invest in a skill that doesn't deliver as much punch but that's part of the learning process, right? Since I'm solo/PvE probably to level 20 or so - at least - I'm hoping this won't be a problem.

But am I missing something? I mean, if I die, I die - it's not like I can't come back, right?

Hmmm . . . I thought we were locked into factions unless you were an Imperial?

So far I've decided Bosmer (AD) probably as a hunter, gatherer, crafter and Daedra worshiper.

As for the rest, I'll worry about that in-game.

If you pre-ordered you can play any race, any faction.

I'm not even sure on my race yet. My heart says Khajiit but the Sorc in me says something else.

I know my race and class, and what roll i want at end game, but otherwise (since we can always respec later) im just going to wing it.

I played many different races and classes during the beta and enjoyed them all. I can't decide so I'm going to do a completely random character. Dice will decide race, class and faction.

I think part of the fun will be trying lots of different choices until you find:

  1. What you enjoy doing
  2. What you find effective under the myriad of circumstances (Solo PVE, Solo PVP, Group PVE, Group PVP, Epic Castle PVP etc..)

Just make sure you collect enough skyshards to pay for your skill point habit :P (respecs could get expensive!)

Yup plan it out, wait for meta gaming once enough max level, then realise the build you spent ages working on is either
A crap
B gets nerfed

And you have to change it.

Sorry but not enough known about end game to know what to build imo.

I tried AD (Altmer sorcerer) and EP (Imperial Templar) in beta, so i'll probably give DC a whirl! Not decided on which race or class though. Likely will just keep making chars til I find something I like :D

gender, name, race, class and faction... with a general idea of the first four or five skills I want to take. I don't have a like... step by step build.

The only thing I've planned is that I'm playing a night blade first. I enjoyed the NB out of all the classes the most. The rest I never plan. I'll use my first character has a test character then if it can be done better, I'll resign it to a mule/crafter or I may delete it but only when I've reached my account limit.

Usually with any game with the exception of some MMOs, I watch no video, read no best builds, no nothing as I love suprise. I did play many betas but spent most of it actually finding bugs (18 hours on a starter island). I do this with movies also, never watch trailers or anything.

Can we respec? I know we get 8 characters, but I was given the impression they were permanent. Can you reroll a character slot or delete it?

I really want to play a Khajiit. I think Bethesda finally nailed the Khajiit in Skryim - they looked so completely awesome. But the pics I've seen in ESO of Khajiit aren't livin' up to the dream.

A random roll for your first character? That actually sounds intriguing.

why do you assume "endgame" is the only thing that drives how you build for your character?

you can spec for leveling up, you can spec for crafting, you can spec for pvp. we can get plenty of skill points and respeccing shouldn't be that big of a deal.

to the OP: i hope you realize its not fun just sitting in game trying to decide how to develop your character. you might think you can just play it by ear but more often than not you will think i wish i had done something different

@MaxBat,

You can respec but it's fairly expensive I believe. I never got that far in beta to feel the need to respec. You have 8 character slots in live. In beta we had 4 and could delete characters if we wished. I imagine that will carry over to live. I hope so.

Im just going to pick the skills that make sense as I get points. Not going to bypass a skill I can use now just because at 50 it may be useless. I can always redo later.

Aside from broad strokes, like weapons, race, class; i'm just gonna let my character grow organically for the most part. I have ingame golas of course, but i will get to them in time. Not rushing them.

I like to have an idea of where I want my character to go and make adjustments to suit the character I imagine as I level along.

Just remember when picking a class that there are many, many ways to build that class. If you want to be a ranged mage doesnt mean you have to go sorc. Nightblades can be very effective healers or tanks. Think of how you want to play your character then choose the class with the abilities you like. I've never spent so long planning a character (not every skill, just what class to play).

I know what race, class, and faction I am going to play but that is it. I don't really like plotting out anything else past that. Part of the fun of the game for me is doing that stuff when I get there.
