Anyone Else Notice...

The release date for Uncharted 3 is 11.1.11? I was just reading a preview on the game and it reminded me of the "samey" release as Skyrim. The famous 1's. Looks like 2011 is the year of the 1's!

Anyone know who announced their date first? BGS or Naughty Dog?

I always find it annoying how Americans do not have their dates in a logical order. Days in months in years is how we have it (1/11/11) rather than months which contain days in years (11/1/11). When I first heard of that, I was excited to think I might be able to get it as early as the 11th of January.

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11:11_(numerology) phenomenon is culturally iconic on the webz with numerologists so I'm not surprised that companies will take advantage of this for marketing given the media and source. Not sure who was first, and I don't care. Just another day for me.

They were both announced on the same night, at the VGAs. It's just a coincidence that both developers decided to take advantage of two of the more memorable dates of this year for their games.

Ya, I've always thought it is stupid how we Americans do it. It doesn't make any sense. It should be in ascending order. When I was a kid I always struggled with that, got confused all the time.

We write it out in the same order that we say it.
Makes perfect sense.

Finding 'significant' dates isn't a difficult thing to do, considering they happen all the time. What about 10/10/10? Or 9/10/11? The number of weddings and celebrations skyrocketed on August 8, 2008, and does similarly on many other such dates. We're mere days away from 3/14, otherwise known as Pi Day. Friday the 13th has permeated our superstitious numerology based on little more than a bad movie series. And if your school classroom has an unusually high proportion of people born a couple weeks apart, chances are there was a really, really big snowstorm 9 months earlier.

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601 standard for writing dates is YYYY-MM-DD, which is very widespread around Europe and is how I've always written dates.

So I find it annoying you australians do not have your dates in a logical order :P

Us Canadians do it day/month/year, but we say it month/day/year, so we write it as 1/11/11 is 1st of November, 2011, but we say it as November, 1st, 2011. Maybe Canadians are a bit more sophisticated, that we can write it and say it differently, and the Americans have to keep it simpler. Then if Americans do it to keep it simpler, how come they don't use metric then? You can't get any simplier than that. So I guess Americans are more sophisticated that way, where they can use fractions better than us Canadians. :D

Uh... get over it?

When I lived in NZ, I did it their way but switched back here in the US after a period of adjustment. Also, blah blah blah, thread response.

Well *I* find it annoying that your country isn't spelled the same as my country. Why use two different words when it could be one word? You're clearly doing it to be obnoxious, because everyone knows nothing is easier than making an entire country stop doing something deeply ingrained in the habits of daily activities. Quit being so different, people in different places! *fist shake*

I believe that's because of the way we speak the date.

November first, 2011. Or 11/1/11

I know some other countries speak it in a different matter. It's all the same message, anyways.

On topic - I like how people are taking advantage of it. I hope they take advantage of 12/12/12 next year too.

Europeans say "11 of november 20 - 11"

As an American, I read this and think:
"We cut out unneeded wordage, making our system more efficient than your 'proper European logic' so a big :frog: to all the nay sayers"

But only to the point where I am not actually insane.

I think I have enough intelligence to determine that numbers ordered in fours represents the year, and that those other pesky two digit groups can be often distinguished by range. Months have a range of only twelve, days a range of 31 at most. Generally, I take into account the area from which the date has been set, and follow applicable rules.

I write DD/MM/YY because that's how I say it and you might think saying 1 of November 2011 is strange but it's because you're translating it...in my language it makes perfect sense :)

As for the topic, it's a cool date so...

Could I interest anybody in a set of used deep well sockets? 1/4", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 9/6", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 15/16", and 1".
Hmm. No use for them? Too bad. No Harley for you. I have metric also.
How about an adjustable SAE/Metric monkey wrench?

On topic: Usually, when you have to insert a date on an online form the format is spelled out so there is no confusion.

11/11/11 works either way...but I could see how 11/1/11 could be confusing to some. I probably won't be buying Uncharted 3, and I'm glad Bethesda kept it simple with 11.11.11 or 11/11/11, or 11-11-11.

The release date of Uncharted 3 has no significance other than that it's a Tuesday, the most common release day for software. Skyrim's release date was not only chosen because it's a cool date, but because it's a Friday. Beth is considerate enough to realize that most of their fans have responsibilities outside of gaming and it is far more convenient for their fans if the game is released at the end of the week than at the start of the week.
