Anyone Else Think Mages Need Cooler Looking Robes?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 1:42 am

If I can get mage robes like these (without the hats):

Considering I play a SpellSword, these would be perfect for me.

I liked most of Oblivion's, aside from that one white set.

Personally, my Battlemage just aped the Imperial Legion look with the armor and mage's hood. Don't know why, but I loved that on the NPCs.

Pauldrons look cool on mages. Crowns are overdoing it yeah and capes look cool though. Don't see anything wrong with those pauldrons and cape.

Not really a big fan of capes. I only like capes if Batman is wearing it, and last time I checked I'm not Batman....
Unfortunately. :sadvaultboy:

Why would a mage need a pauldron? Is anyone really going to be swinging a sword at our shoulder?Pauldrons make mages look too buff, mages shouldn't look buff.

Mages can get attacked or ambushed by warriors you know that right? Of course mages will get swinged at by swords at one point. I think mage pauldrons should be an option for the mage, more like a part of an armor set. Who wants them wears one, who doesn't.. well doesn't.

What I really mean to point out by doing this thread is : Assassins and Mages NEED to look differently.

Then assassins should stop wearing robes. Robes are impractical as all get out for assassination anyway.

The idea of an assissin clothing being loose fitting assassin's creed style cloth is laughable. Yeah it looks cool, but it's stupid. Cloth is way too noisy.

There is such a thing as too obvious. Assassin's Creed always made me wonder how nobody noticed the shady cloaked and hooded guy stalking around with more weapons than the entire city guard combined.

It may just be my own immersion thing, but in daylight I always liked wearing something that didn't scream "I'm an assassin". At night is a different story.

One from Dark Souls looks nice, but others are way over the top.
I really don't like this main-stream thing where thing must be over the top so it lookz moar 3pikz!!1one >_>
I like TES for keeping things simple and realistic.

Still, I wouldn't mind if there were robes with unique design.

Y'know... out of all the ones posted here, I think I prefer the Skyrim picture. Everything else is just too garish and ridiculous (e.g. crowns, spikey pauldrons, shredded 'cool' edges), and imo looks pretty bad and out-of-tune. Besides, I'm a friggin mage, not some hairdresser or model. If I want to impress, it'll be through magic, not through the thickness of vallet and lack of fashion taste.

This^ I let my spells do the talking, not my robes.

Nope. It makes perfect sense for Assassins to wear those type of robes. Lightweight, no noises, nothing fancy that reflects light. They don't need pauldrons either since they rely on killing in a stealthy way, taking very few damage themselves.
Mages on the other hand, don't need to hide in the shadows, and be stealthy so they can 15X damage bonus with their daggers. Mages fight head on.

To be honest, I would just like to see robes with some armor components to it for BattleMages and SpellSwords. I'm fairly confident something of the sort will be in the game, but I'll be kind of annoyed if they're not.

That I agree with, shouldn't assassins wear light armor?

Yeah but mages(some of them) should have some self respect. Who in there right mind would go outside wearing bloody neon robes, with colors bright enough to rob a man of his eyesight twice, and enough gold plating to sustain a third world country for a decade? Not me. I prefer my dark, dreary robes, and hoods thank you very much.

Beside's I'm an Argonian I'm already noticeable enough.

Actually assassins that are attempting to sneak on their victims would wear a material like wool, since it is far quieter than (lol) cloth robes and allows maximum flexibility.

However, when assassinating in broad daylight in crowded streets - the same thing as any other crowd member. With just enough room for a few concealed weapons - not an arsenal the size of Russa mind you.

It's important to remember Assassin's Creed though, wasn't really going for any kind of realism.
But I feel skyrim tone it down a bit, they don't like to go too high fantasy.

Mages need change, Assassins are perfect as they are.

I HATE it when RPG's and MMO's etc make mages robes look like some kind of Color&Fabric EXPLOSION. Like the person sewing and dying just went completely mad.

It doesn't look tasteful. It actually reduces the relatability to the character, in my opinion. I don't feel connected to a character that is dressed in a getup that doesn't even make sense as to why it even looks the way it does.

I appreciate the appearance of my characters and want them to look good- but within a reasonable fashion that would mirror the times and some semblance of realism. Crazy edges, frills, crowns, and all that ridiculousness just doesn't do it for me.

The second one maybe, but the first one looks great. Looks like something Skyrim's engine can handle with everything else going on.

Mages don't fight that head on, not always.A good tactic in Oblivion was to summon a monster and use an invisibility spell, using that tactic you could take down most anything and not have to worry about getting attacked, although it was the slow way of doing things.

You're missing the point. We're talking about a game in a fantasy world here, where there are beast races that talk, dragons that speak and Gods that manifest themselves in the world. But if you want to talk reality about a fantasy game then sure. Mages NEED to look different from Assassins. Would you like it if you would be suspected of assassinating someone just because you look like an Assassin (a.k.a a mage wearing robes)? But it's your preference. I prefer something different then those simple cloth robes, something that defines me, as a mage. The only thing that defined a mage from an assassin in Oblivion was when in battle because mages would be casting balls of magic and assassin's would be daggering around.

With the way some of these folks are talking, you might as well go naked and let your magic do the talking. o.o...

Wouldn't mind more variations, but nothing nowhere near those posted at OP. My game needs to be believable, and those "robes" (garments from hell more likely) would kill that feeling, probably to the point of rendering my game unplayable.
