Anyone Else Think Mages Need Cooler Looking Robes?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 5:05 am

You're missing the point. We're talking about a game in a fantasy world here, where there are beast races that talk, dragons that speak and Gods that manifest themselves in the world. But if you want to talk reality about a fantasy game then sure. Mages NEED to look different from Assassins. Would you like it if you would be suspected of assassinating someone just because you look like an Assassin (a.k.a a mage wearing robes)? But it's your preference. I prefer something different then those simple cloth robes, something that defines me, as a mage. The only thing that defined a mage from an assassin in Oblivion was when in battle because mages would be casting balls of magic and assassin's would be daggering around.

I don't see it. Most of the assassins I saw in Oblivion were wearing Light Armor, and hoods. Example: Dark Brotherhood(not counting the hand), and that Morag Tong guy in the Mehrunes razor quest.

In response to the last sentence:

Yes. That IS what makes a mage different from an assassin. Not the clothes. :P

Other than that though, I just don't like the garish outfits. I still appreciate some sort of taste in outfits. But definately not what was in the 3 pics in the OP.

With the way some of these folks are talking, you might as well go naked and let your magic do the talking. o.o...

Exactly! Who needs clothes when your a mage? Keeping stubbing your toes? Cast a shield spell! Things getting cold? Cast some frost resist! Feeling a bit exposed? Cast Invisibility! Clothes are for the magically challenged.

I really liked the simple brown common robe from morrowind, that was the best imo, robes in oblvion (like everything else) were horrible. I would like the return of being able to wear robes over armor, or maybe robe armor. no scrao the robe armor. Hate the robes from wow way too over the top.

Robes have skirts that catch on objects, swish around unnecessarily, AND call attention to themselves because most people wear trousers.

Assassins should wear nondescript leather armor of some sort. NOT black, but a very dark brown would be ideal. Any metal bits should either be painted black or be covered by leather/cloth to minimize reflections and glints. Leather armor can be made to be as silent as clothing and leather should be a common component of clothing in a rugged place like Skyrim.

If one is highly allergic to actual armor, then they should wear nondescript dark (but not black) clothing that fits closely at the wrists, hips, and ankles (ie NO SKIRTS/ROBES).

Black is actually pretty obvious against any non-black surface, even at night. Dark gray or brown is much better. If one expects to be escaping over snowy terrain, some sort of softly mottled light/dark cloak would be a good idea.

Robes on assassins is unconscionably stupid.

As for robes on mages, I'd agree that some variety would be nice, but elaborate robes should be quite rare, for unique items only. Even there, let's stay away from the WoW level of flash and exaggeration. Some pauldrons in WoW could house a family of five and have space for a guest room left over.

Well that's wrong. Clothing should too. A uniform, the clothing is what defines what you do. Warriors have their clothing, Assassin's have their clothing, Hunters have their clothing, Mages should have their clothing as well. You would recognize an Imperial Soldier from miles away from the armor he wore, even though there are lots of other type of warriors. I hope armor or banners on armor define factions in Skyrim. I wouldn't want to mistake a Stormcloak for an Imperial Legion soldier.

Yeah but mages(some of them) should have some self respect. Who in there right mind would go outside wearing bloody neon robes, with colors bright enough to rob a man of his eyesight twice, and enough gold plating to sustain a third world country for a decade? Not me. I prefer my dark, dreary robes, and hoods thank you very much.

If this game was based on modern themes rather than medieval, I'd agree. But you have to take into account that back then, flashy, gaudy, elaborate clothing was a pretty much a staple for the elite in cultures all around the world. It was one of the ways that marked them as someone above peasants with basic clothes because they could afford the extra 'fluff'.

Basic low level robes being basic, sure. High level robes being fancy and elaborate are just as feasible.

Wow half of you guys want some boring looking mages.

If the warriors get cool over the top looking armor then mages should get the same with robes. I love the dark souls example but idk if it would fit in skyrim. But I agree mages need more cooler looking robes, all we've seen is the same robe in every screenshot.

Robes like the couple worn by Thadon and Syl in Shivering Isles would be acceptable to me.

Bad color choices....

Like I said in one of my earlier posts, I would have changed the colors if given the choice, but relatively speaking it looked the best out of what I've played of the TES series.

Those colors are easily changed in either case. o.o ...

This is completely off topic but... Give him a black robe and hood, and he would look exactly like Emperor Palpatine.

None of those picturse you showed us (except the AC "robes") look realistic enough to be placed in Skyrim or any TES province.

The End Times, they are'a comin'.

On topic: I just want some robes that looked fused with armor components. Is that so much to ask?

No we don't need more. And the example robes the OP showed look childish and unrealistic. The whole art style of the game would have to change for robes like those to not look out of place, and personally I like the art style the way it is. DA2 changed it's art style and now it looks like a Saturday morning cartoon. I do not want to see that with the TES games.

I'm curious to know... were you actually content with Oblivion's mage robes?

I like the Dark Souls one, but WoW's ugly over-the-top armor sets don't belong in Skyrim at all. I used to play a mage and looking at the class set retrospective now, Tier 5 is still the only one that doesn't make you look like a clown.

King of Worms got some cool looking robes: http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd336/enharioth/Daggerfall/TheUnderking.jpg

Why can't we get something like that with Skyrim graphics? Maybe we will.
