Anyone Else Think Mages Need Cooler Looking Robes?

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 6:47 pm

No we don't need more. And the example robes the OP showed look childish and unrealistic. The whole art style of the game would have to change for robes like those to not look out of place, and personally I like the art style the way it is. DA2 changed it's art style and now it looks like a Saturday morning cartoon. I do not want to see that with the TES games.

Dude, that's my prefence. If anyone calls my preference childish one more time I'm going to banish them to Oblivion. I said it once and I'm going to say it again, the point of this thread is that Mages need their own clothing, that defines them from other people/classes. If you were happy with Oblivion's over the top simple robes, then kudos for you but I wasn't. We should have options, those who want to stay with basic non-buffed robes should do so, those who want to be kickass gandalf style mages with powerful and rare magic buffed robes that are hidden in some 2 hour long hard as [censored] difficulty dungeon, do so. King of Worms got some cool looking robes: http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd336/enharioth/Daggerfall/TheUnderking.jpg

Why can't we get something like that with Skyrim graphics? Maybe we will.

I'm curious to know... were you actually content with Oblivion's mage robes?

To be honest, I've never noticed them in OB. I saw that guy in the IC Market area walking around in a White Robe, of course the Necromancers had their black robes with the red skulls, etc. But since they don't offer protection, or any special benefits they are really just cloths and I never really made a fuss over them. Course I seldom ever played a pure mage either.

I know what I don't want to see, and that's robes that look like those in the examples the OP listed. For Skyrim I would like to see a lot more fur and tanned leather type robes.

You really don't expect me to use that stand-in body double that was used in Oblivion do you?

I refuse to even link a picture of that loser. When I saw him in game, I literally laughed.

No, of course not. o.o That's why I said I like. :D Been playing a bit of Daggerfall as of late, so I recognized it. o.o

While it's okay to say you don't particularly like the over the top WoW robes in the original post, you stated that - and I quote, "No we don't need more." Seeing as how you weren't really very interested in robes to begin with, I don't see how that's a fair statement to make.

The whole look of mages in Oblivion was just plain... boring. I can understand why some people are adverse to over the top robes, but it was just so uninspired.

Prior to restarting OB last month I had been playing Dragon Age Origins for about 8 months. DAO has robes and these robes were actually pretty nice and they DID offer some kind of Magic or defense bonus, so there was a reason to actually have them. Some of the female robes were very ... attractive also. All was good. But it did not have the over-the-top goofy robes the OP shows (or DA2 has). But that is my opinion and I can accept the fact that you may actually like them. If I were you I would make sure you are playing on the PC because all your robe fetishes will be fulfilled with mods (just look at what OB has).

If you want more magic items that's fine, but I don't like this "defines them from other classes" bit. Some people may be happy about being pigeonholed into a certain look, but this is not an MMO where you're confined to robes or nothing. A mage doesn't have to wear something that screams "mage" any more than an assassin has to dress in all black and carry knives everywhere.

Hell, most of those in the OP are so ornate and top heavy your character would just fall on his back the second he tried to stand up.

I would like robes that really shows that your a mage. But not something too gaudy, or overly colorful. I guess it terms of mage robes I personally like these.

How can that not be a fair statement? Does the poll want a general consensus, or does it only want the opinions of those that agree with the OP's opinion? You need to add that to the first post if that is the case.

Oblivion felt like there was a single basic robe that underwent a bunch of reskins and that's about it.

If I were you I would make sure you are playing on the PC because all your robe fetishes will be fulfilled with mods (just look at what OB has).

Ironically enough, I haven't found any robe that I was particularly interested for in Oblivion in terms of mods. Most of them were just reskins.

A mage doesn't have to wear something that screams "mage" any more than an assassin has to dress in all black and carry knives everywhere.

The choice, however, is always nice. o.o

I prefer the Subtle robes that Skyrim offers personally. But i would like to see, like the cloths in Oblivion, a range of poor robes to fine robes. But nothing too Garish.

It's like asking a person about their opinion on a game's story, them telling you it was good, then upon further inspection from yourself you find out it's rubbish. You then go on to ask said person, hey, what's the deal? Then they proceed to state that they never really payed much attention to the story.

Assassins wearing swishy robes that catch on stuff is stupid. Normal men on the street wear pants.

Mages could use more variety tho, but that doesn't have to mean glowy bits, floaty crystals, and pauldrons the size of a sno-cone stand.

World of Warcrraft robes wouldnt fit at all. WoW has very cartoony aesthetics and Skyrim doesnt. The Dark Souls concept art I could see fitting in though.

Ok I understand what you mean. But then there's the accomplishment bit. Warriors have dozens of different types of armor, even "Silly" (I like them, but they would be silly in some of you guys' opinion) elven glass armor for those who want to be 'over the top'. Mages could go to a general store and buy a pair of robes for 20 gold, while warriors need to go into dungeons to acquire some kickass armor. There's no sense of accomplishment for mages rather than new spell tomes and staves (from what I understand, are rare).

Kudos to you on that link. That is an example that shows that mages can have robes that define them but aren't "over the top". I like those as well.

All of those would be a welcome change for Skyrim.

Something like these would be welcome for BattleMages and SpellSwords:

Dude I played the game (Way too much actually). I saw the robes. I just didn't cry any because I didn't have prettier ones to wear. I was too busy trying to find better armor. SO ... I don't think we need more robes than OB had. If it makes you feel better I'll just remove my vote from the poll so things lean more towards your opinion.

Done and I'm out of here.

I didn't think anyone liked the stock Exquisite Robes. 8-0

I did ... But it's not surprising that those who didn't like them would post more than those who did.

As for Skyrim's robes, i think the ones we've seen are fine for lower-ranking mages. And I'd prefer even archmage's to wear clothing that looks practical--although made from richer looking materials.

Honestly, I don't care about the poll. I haven't even voted (And I don't plan to). I was just stating what I stated for discussion's sake. *Shrugs* It's a bit petty to say that we're crying if we didn't exactly feel satisfied with the robes Oblivion had. o.o...
