Anyone Else Think Mages Need Cooler Looking Robes?

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:48 am

So http://i27.lulzimg.com/4216b5108d.png we see a pair of robes. Don't get me wrong, it looks cool FOR an assassin. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_RU8vXW4WLqU/S91wnFf8GoI/AAAAAAAAR-w/fF87ZHYw0eQ/AssassinsCreedIIGame%202010-04-18%2015-33-40-84.jpg. I like Bethesda's decision in going with the staffs and beards, that's a big improvement. People want wands but I disagree. Staves are much much more cooler and give off that powerful mage aura. Now what I'd want to see is mage robes that give off that powerful aura as well, maybe depending on your element preference. Here's a couple of  looking mage robes :

http://wow-pro.com/files/T5_Warlock_Bloodelf.jpg - Now That's awesome. Necromancers would look pretty badass in that armor, even if they were resurrecting chickens.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6229/6208934769_3892d6b0ed_z.jpg - Fire Mages. Epic look.
http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lobtn4N3IR1ql570ho1_500.jpg - Now that's what I call MAGE ROBES.

Those 3 are way to over the top IMO. I wouldn't mind a unique robe being over the top as long as not everything is. It all comes down to preference and if nothing else you can mod it in(not a bash at console players, just has comp specs in sig)

I think I like the Skyrim robes best. The darksouls one looks OK but the three examples you've shown are a bit too garish for my taste. I'll stick with Skyrim robes.

They're simple, functional, good looking, and it doesn't make me look like I belong at a carnival.

Have we seen in real mages robes? I don't recall any myself.

Ah,I found a guy in a dirty white robe shooting fire, It seems pretty good but certainly not stylish.

While I wasn't really satisfied with the robes in Oblivion, lets leave WoW out of this. The only robe I truly ever liked in The Elder Scrolls series would probably have to be Morrowind's Exquisite robe. Lets see if Skyrim changes that. o.o

I think they're too over the top really.... Now I would like something a bit more.... well something. But I can understand how hard it is to make GOOD robes without going OTT or just really camp. If you look on a certain UESP page that may contain all of the pre-released screenshots there is one which really stands out to me as badass robes... heck... that may just be the fire...

What I really mean to point out by doing this thread is : Assassins and Mages NEED to look differently.

While I think mages need better looking robes with more variety than just differing colors, the ones the OP put up are (with the exception of the Assassins Creed one) just kind of...gaudy IMO.

(Left = Rouge/Right = Mage)

Even that is a bit over the top and would have to be a very rare armor hidden in a dungeon somewhere.

Get rid of the pauldrons, crown, and cape, and I would wear that.

You might be confusing robes as there was only one exquisite robe. I thought it looked nice and was very fitting for a Mage in a position of power. Granted I would have changed it's colors a bit given a choice, but relatively speaking, it was easily the best looking robe out of the TES series in my opinion.

I will model my own unique robe for my mage/scimitar build mage if none of the vanilla models cut it for me. Although I'm gonna just change the model of the robe I have currently on my character and wont be touching any of the stats. Of course I'll have to find a robe that I use consistently cus' it would be kinda stupid to go change the model everytime I find a new robe. But some of the robes I've seen look pretty good.

Pauldrons look cool on mages. Crowns are overdoing it yeah and capes look cool though. Don't see anything wrong with those pauldrons and cape.

Since we're posting images from Two Worlds II... I really liked this particular robe (You can customize the colors, but this is the colors I had chosen at the time).

Why would a mage need a pauldron? Is anyone really going to be swinging a sword at our shoulder?Pauldrons make mages look too buff, mages shouldn't look buff.

Totally agree, I prefer the simple looking robes. All the paraphernalia around the edges just looks stupid in my opinion, way too dramatic and a bit lame

What I like about Elder Scrolls is the realistic edge it has for a fantasy story - like LOTR in many respects. The WOW templates of exaggerated characters - huge monsters, highly elaborate armour/robes - just doesn't do it for me.

Y'know... out of all the ones posted here, I think I prefer the Skyrim picture. Everything else is just too garish and ridiculous (e.g. crowns, spikey pauldrons, shredded 'cool' edges), and imo looks pretty bad and out-of-tune. Besides, I'm a friggin mage, not some hairdresser or model. If I want to impress, it'll be through magic, not through the thickness of vallet and lack of fashion taste.

I agree, the robes in oblivion were incredibly plain. I'm not saying they shouldn't be there, they are good robes for starters, but there needs to be some epic robes for epic mages.

Agree with others - lose the pauldrons

I guess it doesn't hurt to have options - I wouldn't want to stop others from having that type of garment - but it's not my thing at all.

In fact, I like the really simple clothes - think of Strider / Aragorn from LOTR. Low key in the way he dresses, because it's impractical to be otherwise given what he needs to do. That's the way I see my character
