Skeletons have never been scary for me. They're much less scary than zombies on the scariness scale, and zombies aren't that scary for anything but a lone, unarmed person surrounded by a group of them.
I think it's because my first depictions of skeletal fiends was probably in the old clash of titans or some such movie, where they looked silly the way they moved given the limited technology of the time. I'm sure it looked amazing when it first came out, but I had already seen stuff like Star Wars and Jurassic Park by that time.
I like how they are in Skyrim, because it makes no sense for a mere pile of dry bones to be so strong. They would also only weigh like 10 pounds. Well, I'm exaggerating, but basically they'd be easy to destroy if not knock around. I think the next step should just be to do away with skeletons.
Then zombies, because a sack or rotting flesh is only marginally better than a pile of dry bones. Give us some really scary enemies to populate all these caves and crypts.
Though I will say the only time I've nearly jumped out of my seat in Skyrim was when I turned the corner in a dungeon and a Skeever flew at my face. Yes, a skeever, but I had no idea it was there and as soon as I turned the corner its nasty open jaws were literally filling my screen.
Edit: I also find it kind of funny that skeletons can generally wield weapons and use armor when they have no muscles and no brains, whereas zombies generally don't have any weapons and armor and they might still have at least some of their brains intact. I just think it'd be best to put these fantasy tropes to rest. At least giants and "dire" creatures like dire wolves make some sense. Take something dangerous and make it bigger (even if physics say it wouldn't actually work, but this is fantasy).
