Anyone else think the Skeletons just aren't as scary?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:55 pm

If anyone here played Daggerfall then they may remember the noise that the Skeles would make when they entered the room.

It was a shriek that would always send a chill down my spine, I'm not sure why but it was horrible :-)

I wish they still made that noise.

that is all!

I loved and hated the noise they made. It was so freakishly loud that even when I turned the volume down to almost nothing I would find myself actually yelling "SHUT THE [censored] UP!" at my computer every single time I ran into one.

The noise itself - assuming they'd fix the volume and make it less physically painful to those of us with acute hearing - was awesome, though, and I think it'd definitely help make the undead feel more terrifying. Skeletons really weren't scary in Oblivion or Skyrim. Morrowind's were ok, but I think that was moreso the atmosphere of Morrowind's tombs.

On a side note, draugr scared the bejesus out of me in Morrowind, and I still occasionally jump when I'm caught off guard in Bloodmoon. Something about the way they moved was just scary beyond belief. Really wish they'd have been more like that than the clumsy zombies they are now.

There really isn't anything in Skyrim that can be called scary unless you have a phobia.

It's not a horror game, nor is it real life, so it's hard to get scared :P

I am a little dissapointed that the regular skellies can be one shotted. The hooded ones are nice though.

I always found the sounds of Homunculi and Ghouls to be more terrifying, because they were much tougher than silly ol' skeletons.

Especially when you were using a blunt weapon.

Although, nothing can compare to the horrifying sound of a completely silent humanoid spell caster tearing up your butthole with a fireball spell from behind.

I have been able to one shot them with my ona-handed mace for days now. They don't frighten me.. I want them to make some champion or elite skeletons that are actually hard to kill. I mean, even the draugr scourge is too easy to drop.

In Skyrim skeletons aren't even GOOD anymore. I remember running into my first one thinking "I better use my strongest weapons" turns out I killed it in one shot.

Haven't they made that bone creaking noise since morrowind though? and Skyrim skeles are so weak, 1 shield bash and they explode... there's no fun in it

The creature noises in Daggerfall in general were awesome.

I quite like the skeletons in Skyrim though (moreso than Oblivion's). The clicking noise they make adds to the atmosphere, even if it isn't scary.

Hmm. Maybe it's just because I'm used to every other depiction of skeleton enemies in the history of RPGs, but I'd be surprised to run into a "Skeleton" (no name qualifiers like Blood, or Dread, etc) that wasn't terrifically weak.

The Night Mother is scary. Have to turn the volume down at night when her loud mouth opens.

Skeletons should be weak, there is no sinew to hold the bones together. I remember the noise they would make in Daggerfall and it always struck me as odd, seeing as they have no lungs or vocal cords or lips.

Cicero and the Night Mother are so well done they could have been their own game. Even the DB plotline is fantastic and epic. In fact it's so well done it makes you forget about the main quest. Like watching a really good classic horror/drama movie. Loved it.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the fireball spell sound from Daggerfall (think it was fireball, one of the flame spells anyway) is used on TV all the time, Dr Who, Casualty even the Tram Crash in Coronation Street. My ears always [censored] up when I hear it, maybe it's from hearing it from behind in many a dungeon.

Caves and dungeons would be a lot better if they were not so well lit with candles and lanterns everywhere. Pitch black is more like it, allowing you to use a torch - torches right now are useless due to high illumination - and also work it so torches flicker and can get blown out by a gust of wind in a cave tunnel as well as on a timer so torches become spent.

Then the skeleton sounds would be a lot more scary, as would the dark shadows created by a torch held above your head where you can only see within that radius of light.

They're too easy to kill, one shot with any weapon and they're gone.

They're so hard to loot, especially when you kill a group of them together.

Skeletons are pathetic now. It's nice. I'd like to just walk up to one and pluck it's head off. :3

Skeletons have never been scary. I only feared them in Oblivion because they had scaled versions, Skeleton Champions that could take more hits and do more damage than any skeleton has any right to be doing. Skyrim skeletons are perfect - they're just bones, hitting them once should do the trick. It's more immersive that way.
