Is anyone else worried about the size of the map?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:38 am

I've seen the map quite a few times and it just doesn't seem as big as the one on oblivion. I know once we give it time (for those who play on PC), there will be other locations to explore thanks to mods, but Vanilla Skyrim's map seems a lot smaller to me.
A huge part of Oblivion (to me) was exploring for hours and hours finding new things because the map was so HUGE.

What does everyone else think?

Skyrim will be roughly the size of Oblivion. If you consider that Skyrim is a smaller province than Cyrodi'il, it seems reasonable to expect the scale to allow for more realistic exploration than Cyrodiil. And since there will be fewer, more unique dungeons that means there will be more worth actually exploring (as opposed to Oblivion's randomized, level-scaled, item-scaled abandoned mine/fort/ruin every 2 feet no matter what direction you head in)

Wow, I should've looked. I'm sorry! Go figure, I stalk this forum like crazy but manage to look over one of my biggest concerns. :sadvaultboy:

Apparently it's of comparable size to Oblivion (the world in game). You have nothing to worry about.

Further, it will probably feel bigger than Oblivion because of the mountainous landscape. Morrowind felt bigger because of this. Also, I think (hope) the fast travel will actually make you go somewhere before you can fast travel there instead of being able to fast travel to any city from the beginning (Oblivion). The landscape and travel options will make it feel at least as big as Oblivion, if not bigger.

i don't get why you guys always have to assume that the tamriel map is always to scale in the games. in daggerfall the map was as big as the england country side, but when you look at the tamriel map, high rock is smaller than cyrodiil. so the fact of the matter is, bethesda will make skyrim however big they feel like making it. and if i go by my gut feeling, bethesda will make the map bigger than in oblivion. it only makes sense for a later game.

It's all in how they construct the world. Morrowind felt bigger than Oblivion due to fog, and they way the terrain was built, even though Oblivion had more square footage than Morrowind did.

Skyrim is a rough, brutal, harsh landscape. Something tells me that traversing it won't be a skip through a meadow of tulips. It will feel big enough.

There is alot im worried about but the map size isnt one, its all about how they construct the terrain that matters.

I thought compared to Morrowind Oblivion was tiny. I could get someplace in oblivion in a fraction of the time for morrowind and look at the map size I was very disappointed.

It's reported to be same size as Oblivion, which means It's bigger than Morrowind and fallout3.

Tis all good.

As TheEldestScroll pointed out, Bethesda are not going to tie themselves down to making the game world to scale with the Tamriel world map. It'd be perfectly legitimate if they chose to make Skyrim five times as large as Cyrodiil [for example], even though the Tamriel world map makes Skyrim appear slightly smaller. Besides, even if Skyrim was designed to scale with Tamriel, it'd still be a huge map, and I doubt anyone would be able to tell just how big it was.

It's not going to be a problem because there is going to be way more stuff you can do than in Oblivion.

It will be 1.3 Oblivions in size of the map from my guesstimate.

Oblivion's map was theoretically bigger than Morrowind's yet felt smaller because of the landscape, Morrowind having Red Mountain and the ashlands dividing all the different regions, where as Oblivion was quite the opposite, having the middle of the map all open and easily traveled through , making navigating across the map much quicker.

Now seeing as Skyrim has the throat of the world (second highest peak in Tamriel... well highest now i guess.... :/ ) smack in the middle of the province, I can only suppose the terrain will make Skyrim's map/landscape, feel that much bigger.

I just would have liked to see it so much larger than Oblivion's size (assuming it is that size). Then it would have conveyed that realistic feeling of colossalness like things would really look and not that feeling of being in a game map.

I am. But if the contents and gameplay blow Oblivion unmistakenly out of the water, I won't be bothered. Since the team working on Skyrim is like three times - ? - bigger than the one working previously on Morrowind and they will have the same amount of time to finish it, they have less of an excuse to not accomplish this. I trust it will turn out fine.

i was hoping everything to scale like daggerfall, i spent so much time on that game more than morrowind,
probably the same as oblivion doe to the huge amount of mods. I want towns the size of towns not villages,
cites that take ages to walk thought i want a barren tundra that coming across a dungeon doesn't happen every ten seconds.

Ok to get an idea how big skyrim is remember how big chorral was... now remember chorral the town had buildings that were ALL far larger inside then outside AND that the town itself was much larger inside then out...

Now look at it on the map... notice how huge it is on the map? Now look at the skyrim map.. and note the towns are those little itty bitty dots.... And note those towns are open and as such to scale AND the buildings are also likely to scale also unlike ob.... now how big does the skyrim map need to be to make it look like it does compared to the ob map?
