Is anyone else worried?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:29 am

to me one of the things that got me excited about skyrim the most was the promise of vastly improved first person combat (aka feeling like you've hit something instead of slashing away forever like oblivion) and im seeing different journalists who we're at the skyrim demo event ( some australian article and invisbile walls podcast ) talking about how magic and ranged combat feels good but melee combat is still iffy with hit detection + camera problems, What are your opinions on this? are you worried or do you think it will be fixed by release?

I just made this thread because the information discouraged me about skyrim.

Yeah I noticed that too.

If you actually pay careful attention to the gameplay trailer, you can see when the PC hits the spider, it just slides back a couple of feet. Looks like Oblivion all over again to me.

Hopefully it'll be fixed!

We've got what, seven months?

No, I'm not particularly worried.

I understand your worries but I believe Bethesda will have this thing nailed down by 11-11-11

Giant Bomb on Skyrim: Melee combat in Skyrim looks largely unchanged from Oblivion, in that you sort of bluntly hack at your opponent when you attack, though you will get scripted execution animations from time to time depending on how the fight is going. Blocking and bashing with shields also looks pretty familiar

I read one new article where the writer said the combat wasn't so vastly improved over Oblivion's. You and other people reacted far too little to taking hits.

According to the writer, leaves on trees also looked a bit flat :)

Here's the article: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/298510/previews/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-the-most-beautiful-game-of-the-generation/
"Although the leaves on the trees look a bit flat"

"Howard is battering his opponent with his shield, as well as taking swipes with his sword. The combat hasn't moved on loads since the last iteration in terms of the way they play out; if you ask us, enemies still react far to little to being slashed and shot with arrows until the final blow when they reel backwards and collapse on the floor."

from one of the developer replies, he said that they didnt really have time to polish the game, so i wouldnt expect it to be perfect, todd also said that they wanted to wait for the next gen console. so maybe a slight improvement over oblivion

strange, the article I saw, (can't find at the moment) said enemies still slid around after taking hits.

You can see an example of that in the gameplay trailer (When he hits the spider.)

And the same writer and everyother writer the game looks great. One writer saying it may be the best looking game world they had seen in a game.

@FriendlyBear, I thought the Spider was an example of good hit detection and feel in combat. As it reacted to being hit, same with the dragon. But there are other examples we have not seen were I guess this is not so.

Source? You said that in a thread yesterday and didn't provide either.

no im not worried. im not expecting perfection out of this system. will it be improved? sure it will. does that mean ALL of the past problems will be completely gone? no. it'll still be a ton of fun

Im not expecting anything hyper realistic as far as combat goes. Just an improvement over oblivion making it more tactical and stuff.

It's combat. Bethesda has 7 months to make combat fluent. They're going to make it happen, don't worry.

To me the spider looks more like it stepped back, not ice skated on dirt.

on my first post on this thread, Giant Bomb is doing some..live feed so the sites not doing anything, but I gave part of the qoute above.

About the spider yeah I thought that was good hit detection too, they dont have rubber feet, I figured the force of the strike was enough to make it slide back on Ice, If I see a Humanoid player doing that then I'd call foul

I'm not expecting perfection, but it's been more than 5yrs. since OB. I think it's reasonable to expect dramatic improvements.

The weapons combat never really mattered to me. I usually play using a bow.

I enjoyed the way arrows worked in Oblivion, and from the sound of it, I'm going to really like sniping with the new system.

I really hope blocking is decent, with a satisfying bash attack. Something to stagger enemies before I svck some health from them, provided that there is an absorb health spell (or three).

When the player character hits the spider in the trailer, it looks really good in my opinion. The spider takes rapid steps back when the hit lands.

Are you kidding? The spider in the trailer carefully steps back after being hit, and moves just like a spider has to move. Just reviewed the trailer, and you are wrong

While I would love for Skyrim to have fully interactive and realistic combat, it's not going to happen. As long as the combat feels intense and engaging, and attacks actually look like they have weight, I'll be happy.
