Anyone feel to old...

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 12:49 am

The whole "This forum is mature/well behaved" comes up often, and is something I generally disagree with. It definitely isn't the only well-behaved forum I am aware of, and I've always felt that the "maturity" on here are primarily due to how absolute the rules are and how much they are enforced. All hot topics are forbidden. Maturity can only be proven when you have the chance to show maturity, which, given the restricted topics, isn't the case here IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I do like it here, hence I come back, but I also like it on other forums that I frequent where those topics aren't forbidden and don't devolve to flame-wars. IMO the rules prove that this forum has a lack of maturity (and therefore needs to be kept in check) rather than a level of maturity.

There are many members on these forums who are not able to discuss the "prohibited" topics without flaming and flamebaiting, and it does not only apply to the younger members. Members read through topics and do not realise that in many instances the moderators have already been busy editing and deleting posts to keep (a seemingly innocuous) topic on track. It has also has to be considered that this is primary a game forum for discussion of Bethesda Softworks games, the last thing we want - or need - are discussions here in CD that take up a lot of moderator time, that devolve into name calling because one member cannot accept other people's views and opinions and that result in warnings, sometimes for those who are longer standing members and have been dragged into saying something wrong.

As said, most look at the topics when they log in and see a relatively clean and clear topic, and don't see the crap that the mods have already dealt with - we have a trash forum filled with it.

I don't give out that information at a bar when I meet someone or talk to them.

"Salutations. My name is Andrew G. Wadsbottom, and I live at 1 de Dam, Amsterdam, zipcode 1000AA, tel: 067 - 980 - 4567, Dob 04 -05- 1911." As I sat at an empty stool at the bar. The other smiled briefly and nodded as I continued. "Gotta light?"

Granted, if she's hot I probably will give out that information. But then, she's probably coming home with me already by that point B)

But the average joe doesn't get that info, hell no. Why should it be different here? Because we have wacky names and pictures instead of faces? Admittingly, I get thrown off by avatar chnges, but other than that..

disclaimer: That's not my real last name, and I don't live in the queens palace, and that's not a real phone number -I think...

Wait... you mean normal people don't do that? [censored].

All that said, the xXXx's in my name are a cruel and constant reminder of how much more mature I've gotten in comparison to the apparently stupid kid who thought it was wise to put those in his username. :brokencomputer:

Agreed, when I first saw your name coming up everywhere, I was thinking about how much of a hardcoe FPS gamer you must've been. I think you were repping an ODST avatar at one point -- not quite sure why.

I feel young compared to most of you

Don't worry. You act like it too.

***

Honestly though, I was incredibly immature when I was younger in 2004/2005. I was constantly pulling pranks and all those sorts of things. And perhaps I don't have a mature avatar, but i'd like to think that my posts are a lot more insightful and mature than my avatar.

Hopefully you can all agree.

Nope, I don't think forum's have an age limit. They're not really for younger people, but for people of all ages to discuss things.

I have been here for quite a while though, I started browsing this forum long before I started posting haha. Only a small minority of those from way back when still post frequently.

Well, this forum here is obviously tailored for all age groups, I mean they have the auto-censor to allow kiddies to roam freely.

I don't know why though, there's not a single game that doesn't have atleast a T (13+) rating here.. I think 13 year olds can handle a little swear word here or there, I know I could. Heck, I used to be the one dishing out most of the swear words back in the day! :P

The forums are rated 13+ regardless of any game ratings.

Do we want people coming on these forums using bad language? Nope.

Oh, Im not arguing that you remove the auto-censor, I was just stating how this forum is relatively child-friendly.

Yep. :) Much of it is down to those who report anything out of order fairly quickly allowing the mods to sort it. We are very grateful to the members that make reports and help keep the forums running smoothly.

Ha, I started posting here in mid-2005 when I was just 17. Seems so long ago. Met a some really cool people here, too. But people come and go and if you make the effort to track down and talk to some folks, it really does go a long way in making a tight group of friends. That being said, you realise you have a bunch of people on the internet that you're at least Facebook friends with but live in other countries. Its hard trying to explain that away to friends in real life. I don't know if I'm just old school but having internet friends is totally weird. I love them all the bits but don't even know what half of them look like.

EDIT: I guess I'm whining too, so, meh... how does one properly complain about complainers?

You don't basically. Then again, if they can complain? WHy can't I right? It's a vicious circle.

Its a bit ridiculous when we can't discuss things that happen in the games because of an abitrary age limit.

Is tis a forum for discussing Bethesda games, or is it the kindergarten facebook?

I feel young compared to most of you, I joined a month (or two) before my 13th birthday and it's been a little more than a year since then. Everyone else is old :P

What!? I could've sworn you were married and in your late twenties.. :unsure2:

Maybe Im confusing you with someone else... :P

That's a semi-valid point..

There are some things in the game we can't talk about.

There's one quote in TES IV: Oblivion where an Orc in Cheydinhaal says, "Well, aren't you the high tom-[censored]!"

See, that last word is probably censored. Why? It's in the game!

(For those of you who are curios what the word is, it's slang for nipble)

Age shouldn't be an obstacle if the people are mature enough and the highest concentration of younger people on the forum is in the fallout section. This means I don't get bothered by their hideous spelling and shortened versions of words (you is a three letter word, why shorten it?) as I stay in the TES forums. Not to say all the young people on the forum are like this.

I'm over 40. Do I feel old....not really.

1. NEWS FLASH....when you're 50, the only thing that will really make you feel your age are aches and pains. You can still think of yourself as a kid...you might even be behaving more like one. (lol).

2. I find it interesting to see how younger people see things...less creepy talking to people online. What's the other option...hang out at schoolyards (eek).

3. I know how much I would have appreciated having "older people" I could ask for advice on stuff. Before the Internet, it was whoever you knew...often family and neighbors...a limited pool of experience and resources (and biases). Here, maybe my experience can benefit someone looking for advice. If a few people avoid learning stuff the hard way, I consider that a win-win.

I usually feel fine here, although I do sometimes notice some immature acting and forever brand the offender a "kid" in my mind.

NEWS FLASH

I don't know what it's a sign of, but every time I see the words "news flash", I read it as "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcHL8efKKPE"

I was thinking about the implied [censored] in Fallout 3, and the actual [censored] in Morrowind. The word itself is censored.

--Snip--
I'm not being completely unrealistic and unfair here... right?

You kinda are, actually. But not for the reasons you're probably thinking of -- its checking of the data/ID that just wouldn't be practicable. This is an international forum, and allows members thirteen and older. The former causes problems because it would be nightmarish trying to hook a server into relevant databases from just a handful of different countries, let alone all of them (not to mention the ones where there isn't that sort of centralised/digitised information in the first place). The latter is a problem because, well, how many thirteen, fourteen, fifteen year olds have drivers licences or credit cards or anything else that they could use in such a setup?

For a company who's business is video games, the returns just aren't there .

Wait... you mean normal people don't do that? [censored].

Explains the looks and increased elbow room, aye?

3. I know how much I would have appreciated having "older people" I could ask for advice on stuff. If a few people avoid learning stuff the hard way, I consider that a win-win.

And for some subjects, its much easier to ask anonymous(ish) semi-strangers than one's peers or, say, one's father.

Typing that, a question occurred to me: do any of the parents here find they gain any insight from the threads/questions/so forth that kids make/ask here?

Since it's censored I have no idea what you mean.

'Lack of consent' is my assumption, you innocent child you :P.

Of course you can discuss the games. :) There is nothing stopping you doing so and 99% of the posters here do so without problems, and we know that there are many members playing them who are below the age limit for the game, that is the decision of parents/guardians, however, we have to take the lowest common denominator and there are those for whom bad language and inappropriate content is a nono. Those are the ones we apply to.

Then there is nothing stopping members talking about the games without resorting to bad language or simply allowing the forum auto censor to take effect. It is a fine line, sometimes difficult to apply, usually sorted out with a PM chat with offending members and a topic often discussed by the mods to ensure we get it right. :)

Yeah there are times when I feel old seeing some of the language and expressions used, I am sure I was never like that as a teenager, then maybe I only used it with my friends.
