Anyone feel to old...

Post » Mon Sep 27, 2010 11:30 pm

To quote Wooderson, "I get older, they stay the same age."

I've been bouncing around on internet forums since I was 15. I feel like the old man, now. The majority of forumers act like whiny immature high school kids who's arrogance makes it impossible to carry on a discussion without me having to edit and dumb down my posts. The internet is a collection of memes and unoriginal one-liners that seem only to be struggles for attention. This is one of the, nah it is THE only mature forum I've been on and I'm wondering how many of you feel similar to how I do. Maybe its a changing of times, maybe I'm just outgrowing it, but there's no substance, no merit. We keep cycling through the same age group and it all just feels like a waste.

Maybe you don't agree with me on that, but does anyone else feel kind of old compared to the general internet community?

EDIT: apparently I'm also too old to use the proper form of "too".

Depends on the forum. This one has a lot of kids on it, so at times I feel like I'm looking at a playground. But there are also quite a few advlts on these boards as well.

The other forums I frequent are technical, and so it is rare to have any kids on them at all, and at times I even feel young! (I'm 38 btw).

I'm only 21, so no, I don't feel too old. I would say something about a moderator or two, but they are also old enough to wield ban hammers, and I like this forum...

With the internet being more accessible and with parents letting their kids on the computer unattended at younger ages (then complaining to the masses later...that's a different topic/rant), of course the general age of the internet community will drop. I'm glad to have found a home in a mature forum, but I have been a part of a forum or two when I was 17/18 that didn't moderate well and it was extremely difficult to carry on a decent conversation.

Nah, never mess with older people, they have the experience to deal with it. ;) Are we talking physical or mental age here?

 agreed..... mostly

I will say that this site is far from a bastion in the storm that is the internet. This site has more than its fair share of immature, young, and inexperienced people that claim to know it all, but that is youth anywhere. I feel old when I read the "my game didn't get here on time, this is the worst thing evah!!!" threads or one of the endless "Halp! Im 15 and the only woman I could possibly ever love has just dumped me" or the ever better " How do I talk to a girl" threads. While there are a lot of mature members on this site who are willing to actually discuss a topic, not argue about it, for every mature member here there are 3 that are ready and willing to flame you if you don't wholeheartedly agree with their views or instantly convert to their side of the argument.

So yes, I do feel old when Im on here, then again, maybe Im just too young to have the tolerance and patience to deal with the rambunctiousness of youth.

No, I don't. I know we had a member here way back from my lurking days that was well above 80 if i recall, but his name eludes me at the moment. Also, I'd hate to call Summer old as I fear her banstick, but I believe she's one of our older members, may her alaskan fury have mercy on me :P

Not on the forums I frequent (basically this and a spin-off). I don't really explore "The Internet" though, and don't tend to go on random forums out of curiosity.

There are a lot of kids and a few blatant trolls on this forum, but enough people on my level for it to still be a cool place to hang out.

That, and I'm not old.

This. I fit perfectly among these kids, despite being 30. Which might not be such a good thing when you think about it...

I feel all edgy and irreverant being with all these 20 somethings. :P

At times it feels like I'm being admonished by the older forum members for not being born earlier, and to be honest, I can get that [censored] from my parents.

Lots of you oldies are cool though. :hugs:

As for anyone under 16, you lot can FOAD. Its like being in preschool. :P

I'm 52, so I'm an example of arrested development I guess. I appreciate the moderators of the Bethesda forums and the majority of the forumites for keeping things civil. I have to admit I'm less attached to the forums than when I started in 2005, partly because with no TES V I feel sometimes as if we're all treading water; and partly because I play other games too, such as Guild Wars. But Community still has a few threads worth following for now.

I dunno how old you are, but I'm 21 and I don't feel particularly out of place or even particularly old when I'm here. Unless we're talking forum-years - 7 years is a stupidly long time to have been a member of this place

Mental, mostly. Probably a mix of both. For instance, the people who I'm talking about wouldn't know the Wooderson quote from Dazed and Confused. They'd probably post the LolWut pear.

I'm 21 and I'm just over the typical "my world" mentality of immature forumers. Its like they log in, whine, say "look at me" then argue over whose opinion is right, etc. I'm having trouble putting it cleanly into words at the moment.

EDIT: I guess I'm whining too, so, meh... how does one properly complain about complainers?

Yeah? Well whose fault is that? :P

It's not really a person's age or even particularly maturity that I care about, it's just whether we can function on the same wavelength in general. There are some my age and older with whom I can't, and others markedly younger with whom I can  Ya just gotta be cool!

I don't think its really physical age Masaccio is describing, more emotional and mental maturity, or lack there-of of members of all ages. Though it is more prevalent in younger people than older people due to an overwhelming sense of "I know everything" despite a severe lack of experience.

But I could be wrong.

Haha, I remember when I joined I was in awe at all the members that had joined back in '04, '03, and the even rarer ones before that.

I still sometimes feel new, but then I remember I was 13 when I joined up and have to admit I've come a long way since then.

All in all, 18 is definitely not too old to be around the interwebs.

The example is less about the Dazed and Confused reference and more about the LolWut pear reaction. I'm failing miserably at trying to put it into words.

Yes! The typical internet discussion goes nowhere because everyone thinks they're right, then people spam and post in l337, instead of leaving a thread alone, they'll go in and leave a bunch of flamebait, and then worst of all they walk on my lawn. ;)

I don't, because I'm just 19...but I think that it depends how old you feel in your head really.

I fit in because the majority of the gaming community are people around my sort of age (possibly a couple of years younger) who have more spare time. I've noticed that as I've grown up (and especially in the last 6 months) I have less and less time to game, due to other responsibilties...I guess this happens to everyone eventually, so the forum can at times feel over-populated with young-uns :)

However, I think most of the guys (and girls too) who hang around CD all kind of fit in...doesn't matter how old we are, everyone seems to have a level of maturity (even if it's only slight). I feel a great sense of community here, to the point where I'll see someone post something and think "Pah! That's so Rohugh!" as if I know him! Haha

So honestly? I'm of the belief that it doesn't matter how old you are when you post on this forum because, unlike most (if not all) other forums, there seems to be a level of respect and, dare I say it, love here...everyone wants the community to thrive, so no-one does anything stupid...if they do, the mods weild their might banhammers of doom :D

The internet's always been filled with immature losers though...

There've been people complaining that this forum has been "going downhill" for years and years now. Nothing's changed here, it's just that you're getting jaded or growing up and are noticing it more often than you used to...
