Anyone going to miss the "feel" of Oblivion?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:42 pm

No. Stop throwing out your personal opinions as facts.

Then there were all these (they can't all fit in one post, so it's divided). They sure made it clear that these were only their thoughts, eh?:

Seti, no offense, but in a medium such as a forum (or a medium such as speech or any communication in general), it is or should be automatically understood that whatever the user communicates, it is their opinion. To have to preface one's post with "In my opinion," or "To my way of seeing it," or "Through my subjective world-view" is totally and completely redundant. We, as subjective human beings, do not speak Fact and Raw Objectivity.

If somebody says, "Oblivion was bland" (or hell, "Morrowind was bland," or "Triple-chocolate-peanut-butter brownies are bland"), then they have put forth an opinion.
If you or someone else says, "Oblivion was not bland," or "Morrowind was not bland," or "Triple-chocolate-peanut-butter brownies are not bland", then you or they are putting forth an opinion.

In neither case is one required to specify, "Oh, but this is just my opinion," because that is implicit by the very definition of what it means to open one's mouth (or extend one's fingers to the keyboard) and proclaim anything at all.

I never got that feeling with Oblivion, and I'll be glad if the feeling I had will disappear when I play Skyrim.

Very well said. Requiring people to say "in my opinion" every time they speak or you get massively butthurt is just, lol. Just hilarity.

Oh, my, another meta-debate about Morrowind vs Oblivion. It's starting to feel slighty embarrasing to be a part of this community.

When I first played Oblivion ... I never had that feeling before. I felt so good, so magical. It became my favourite game ever since, and after so many years, feelings are gone.

When I first played Fable 1, I had similliar feeling, but never had it with Fable 2 and Fable 3. So I hope that Skyrim will have that good feeling.

I hope when playing Skyrim, I miss the feeling that it will crash at the most inopportune times. :toughninja:

I kind of feel like this. OB was my first Bethesda game, and I'm pretty sure it was my first open world RPG, so it was completely amazing the first time I played it. Now, I've gone back to MW, played other games in the same vein, so I'm pretty sure I won't have my mind blown to the extent it was when I played OB for the first time. I reckon SK will still be great though, even though I know what to expect (to some extent anyway).

I didn't care for the "feel" of oblivion, so nah, not gonna miss it. SKyrim's harsh, cold and brutal setting suits me far more than oblivions generic middle age feel.

I will miss it at some point in the future like now I miss Baldur's Gate, Fallout (1) or Planescape: Torment. I don't have enough time to replay older games. Oblivion is too fresh for me to miss soon, but yeah, in a few years I could totally see this happening.

I for one am going to miss the magical feel that Oblivion had... I remember when I first played Oblivion and created a mage-type character, fighting spell caster NPC's ( mainly necromancers and the conjurers of the mages guild in the imperial city ) was just so fun. I really enjoyed seeing the random huge summons, random damaging spells, and of course the mysticism spells. Of course I would die in merely 3 seconds of engagement, but it was truly a magical experience. Like every game, as you get further into it and play for a longer time, the magical effect wears off, but this really did make an impact for me like no other. I'm sure Skyrim will give some sort of mystical effect, but with the way it looks, it won't be as grand. Maybe it's because of the viking-like theme ( a theme I usually dislike for gaming ), but I don't think I'll immerse myself into Skyrim like I did Oblivion.

Don't spit it out without even having it in your mouth once :) .

Well Magical feeling of oblivion vaporize too fast in compassion to Daggerfall and Morrowind,
less generated landscapes and NPC faces, templated dungeons and interiors better leveling, better quests and dialogues, large numbers of small features can expand Oblivion make thats magical feeling stay longer.
Skyrim seems much more better in saving of thats Magical feel then Oblivion at last in trailer, screens and previews.

I hope the game doesnt have the same feel as Oblivion. in my opinion i thought morrowind had a better overall 'feel' to the game and a much cooler atmosphere, especially the political atmosphere (you had cities run by the imperial guards, then the 3 great houses all with different guards and different kinds of buildings for their cities). Plus from what ive read/heard/saw (in the gameplay trailer) mage on mage battles look like they are going to be waaaaay better then oblivions, especially with the way spells work now. It sort of looks like an upgraded version of bioshocks' plasmids, and battling other people who can do the same thing just seems awesome to me. I also think that "magical" feel that you're looking for is going to be upgraded and much better in Skyrim, just for the fact that there are more kinds of spells, then just spells cast on target and cast on touch. (Oblivion had a pretty cheesy magical system, especially in comparison to Morrowind's). Also, they brought enchant back as a skill, so that right there tells you that its gonna be a better and more detailed enchanting system then oblivions' dumbed down enchanting, plus it give more diversity for mages.

Will I miss the feel of Oblivion? I can't say. I've only seen a few seconds of Skyrim so I don't have any idea how that game "feels" yet. I love Oblivion, but I'm PUMPED for Skyrim. I have NEVER been this excited for a game release before. I'll tell you one thing, what I love about Oblivion is the sense I get of exploring a living, breathing world. No game before had ever made me fall in love with the WORLD it imagined. I wanted to explore every inch of that place.

It's the whole experience that draws me in. The sense of history and grandeur and discovery that makes these games such a joy to play. So in that sense, no, I don't think I'll miss Oblivion because I think Skyrim is going to give me something new to fall in love with. November can't get here fast enough (never thought I'd say that). :)

I think the more people talk about small problems with Oblivion, the more exaggerated they become. I understand people liked Morrowind's atmosphere better, but I think people have gone a bit overboard in their attacks on Oblivion. I, for one, really loved wandering around Oblivion. Am I excited for a new, rougher motif? Of course. However, wanting something new doesn't require us to totally dismiss the old. I just find it hard to believe people spend hundreds of hours in a game disliking its atmosphere to any large degree, yet still continue playing it for that long.

Morrowind was complete crap to me there was no real feeling in it I just got bored to tears becuase I spent most of the game just traveling
Oblivion was way more lively to me and I hope that this is continued in Skyrim

Agreed. I think Oblivion's atmosphere is so much better. I hope that when I play Skyrim for the first time that I get the same "in awe" feeling that I got with Oblivion and Fallout 3. Also, I'm hoping that being on these forums and being surrounded by all the negativity won't tarnish my first playthrough of Skyrim (I didn't know these forums existed when I played Oblivion).

I saw the trailer, the things I really liked about it was the Dragon-Yell ( Tud'um or something? ), the fact there's spiders in the game, and the use of fire-aoe spells. But from what I've read and seen they're really getting into this whole barbaric dragon killing vibe which I'm not sure if I for one will enjoy.

they're called dragonshouts... or "Thu'um"

If you speak of atmosphere, I've got to hand it to Morrowind really.

The sound of the cracking wood at the harbor, that piercing thunder right before rain starts to fall down, the ash-storms, the clash of cultures, the variety in armor-styles, the political map, the ruins of an ancient civilization, etc...
After replaying it after all those years that game still succeed in sending shivers through my spine and let me discover "new" things.

Not wanting to jump on the Oblivion-hate wagon, but I think Skyrim will make most people forget about Oblivion.
Even though I had that same feeling of awe when I played Oblivion the first time, I really don't see me playing that in 8 years.

No. Skyrim appears to be miles ahead of Blandlivion, so I'm expecting to get that feeling all over again like I did with Daggerfall and Morrowind. ^_^

Couldn't agree with you any more.

probably make people forget more about Morrowind. I asked my friends what they thought of Oblivion, they said it was a great game. I said what about Morrowind? they were like what?
I think a lot of the hate from Oblivion will be gone and directed towards skyrim, thats kinda what happened to Morrowind and daggerfall, or so I am told

If i was to throw my 2 cents.
Oblivion was weak on the settings like uniqueness and epicity if i can say so.
If i am the bet on something, i would bet you gonna have a hell of a surprise. It seems Bethesda is truly trying to recover the uniqueness feeling TES had as a mark before Oblivion.
If so SKYRIM will me much more surprising, epic and grandiose than Oblivion, especially if we take th trailer as reference. Even if cutting the hype of any video as it shows only the best, i hope SKYRIM will surprise me as much as Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind surprised me even on the long run. Many unolved things, many mysteries and wonders of who did that and what the hell for...What happened here, etc..

I also think that skyrim can magnet a lot of flaks but those will probably be directed at the new system not the game setting.
And your friends that where like what about Morrowind didnt play it, or don t care about settings, tales and scenario.
