Anyone going to miss the "feel" of Oblivion?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:46 pm

I for one am going to miss the magical feel that Oblivion had... I remember when I first played Oblivion and created a mage-type character, fighting spell caster NPC's ( mainly necromancers and the conjurers of the mages guild in the imperial city ) was just so fun. I really enjoyed seeing the random huge summons, random damaging spells, and of course the mysticism spells. Of course I would die in merely 3 seconds of engagement, but it was truly a magical experience. Like every game, as you get further into it and play for a longer time, the magical effect wears off, but this really did make an impact for me like no other. I'm sure Skyrim will give some sort of mystical effect, but with the way it looks, it won't be as grand. Maybe it's because of the viking-like theme ( a theme I usually dislike for gaming ), but I don't think I'll immerse myself into Skyrim like I did Oblivion.

From the pics, it really looks like skyrim will have the same "vibe" as oblivion IMO.

No. Skyrim appears to be miles ahead of Blandlivion, so I'm expecting to get that feeling all over again like I did with Daggerfall and Morrowind. ^_^

Seeing how skyrim is "lower tech" when compared to cyrodil, i'm sure it will have a more raw barbaric vibe, and sing magic in that kind of world where it seems to me, is less common place, i think it will leave a stronger lasting impression.

im normally a nice guy.. but are you [censored] in the head? :brokencomputer:
perhaps you not seen the trailer.. im sure you can go find some top dog battlemages and fight them with some even more awesome magic if you so wish.. im pretty sure it will give a much grander affect then OB

I saw the trailer, the things I really liked about it was the Dragon-Yell ( Tud'um or something? ), the fact there's spiders in the game, and the use of fire-aoe spells. But from what I've read and seen they're really getting into this whole barbaric dragon killing vibe which I'm not sure if I for one will enjoy.

Please say that to one of the Morrowind addicts.

When Skyrim is out, I wouldn't be surprised if those of us that love Oblivion will start nagging how Skyrim messed up in some parts compared to Oblivion.

I'll give Oblivion one compliment. The first five minutes I spent in an Oblivion gate, which was within the first hour of gameplay for me, felt epic. Of course my assassin's sneaking efforts were all in vain, due to the light levels, the amount of dread it instilled was awesome. And then I realized a lot of things which ruined the game, but that one moment was awe inspiring...

Im sure our first encounter with a dragon will be similar, and I won't miss any other feeling from Oblivion.

All we can do is compare it to what we know so this will happen lol.

So the feel of the game is now the ability to use mysticism spells or some other Oblivion spells? Uh... they weren't really that interesting. I was thinking more along the lines of environment/culture/style when you say "feel".

I'm not going to miss the "feel" of Oblivion one bit. The game gripped me for about the first hour, and then it quickly lost its novelty. By contrast, I found Morrowind to be a very dull game at first - but after a few days, the world began to leave a resounding impression and charm on me and soon I never wanted to stop. In some ways, Morrowind still has this magical feel to me even without mods - just because of how many little touches the developers left here and there that we tend to forget. Oh, and my first experience with Oblivion was on ancient hardware - so let's say the experience wasn't exactly a pristine one to say the least.

Whilst it's nice to be reminded of past games, every Elder Scrolls game should have a unique feel to it. I don't want to be walking around Winterhold feeling as if I'm just playing a heavily modded Oblivion. I mean really, even New Vegas feels like Oblivion in some ways to me just from how the game "moves". Very odd. Although actually if anything, I'm getting a very strong Daggerfall vibe from Skyrim's locations. :celebration:

I knew it! The reoccurring prophecy is already being fulfilled. You are the first Oblivionite to walk the path of "*sigh.* I miss Oblivion* soon you and your ilk will usurp the Morrowinders as they did the DAGGERFALLians before them.

And so just like in Tamriel itself, the cycle begins again.

dragon fights will be huge and rightfully so for a game based on.. Dragons
but it wont be the only thing, not everyone in skyrim will be barbarians or dragons

Not at all, I still have my copy, and will still have it when Skyrim goes on the shelf next to it.
As for wanting the same feel this time around, no thanks, I would rather have two different games than the same one parts I and II.

I agree with OP.
Oblivion had an amazing feeling. Jeremy Soule's music <3 and the cozy athmosphere.

I'm sure Skyrim will have its own uniqueness. Bethesda seem to be masters of this. I have fallen in love with every single game I've played from them.

oblivion was BOOOOOOOOORING. it improved greatly with mods but that can only take you so far. if the combat and magic are anything like dark messiah and what theyve shown in the trailer, then i will be happy and it appears that they went for a more realistic and gritty look like conan rather than the fancy-dancy, whirly-twirly skip along and sing songs under a rainbow of skittles mood that oblivion had.

As far as I can see, comparing the feel of Oblivion with the feel of Skyrim is kind of like comparing a blank sheet of paper with a carefully made, and detail-rich oil-painting. Maybe blank sheet of paper was a bit exaggerated, but close enough. Skyrim just seem to feature such a fantastical and unique landscape compared to my backyar- I mean Oblivion.

I can't see from one end of New Jersey to the other (no matter how bad the weather is) from my backyard. You must have quite a view up there!
