They would've basically looked like Altmer. Work from that.

There is a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Ayleid_Guardian in the Hall of Epochs, though I'm not sure how much that would help you.

Do you have an image? I didn't make it that far in Oblivion.

I believe there's a story, which gave a description of what they currently look like. If I remember, they look like altmer, but with tanner skin.

It's in 2920. Problem is that 2920 takes place quite a while after the fall of Ayleid civilization, and while the 'Ayleid' encountered is a descendant of the Ayleids, he may not be representative of what they looked like in their heyday.

well when ayleid became ayleid not altmer. they donned their tan skin. if i was to say judging from the descriptions in 2920 and other references. imagine a cross between a chimer and bosmer. if you dont know what a chimer looks like imagine an altmer. a bit shorter, stockier, a bit more athletic like. basically imagine a dunmer just with golden skin and golden eyes

Best we got, however.

Is there an order of divergent sub-races to emerge from the Aldmer? In short, did the Ayleids or Bosmer develop first?

I thought Mankar actually was part Ayleid. We know not all the Ayleids died.

Go look at an Altmer...

There you go. There is your Aylied. Aylied wasn't a race, it was just a group of Altmer.

Why are they called wild elves when they actually had a large empire and were quite civilized?

Because after Alessia and Pelinal usurped White-Gold from them, they fled to the wilderness of Cyrodiil and formed a tribal society based on hunter-gatherer bands.

Ayleidoon Cyrodiil was a collection of sovereign city-states ostensibly owing fealty to the King of White-Gold Tower.

Also, wild parties I guess.

Thought Ayleid meant "Heartland High Elves" and only become "Wild Elves" after the Alessian Order carried out purges.

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/wild-elves

More like, Wild Elves only became Heartland High Elves after Oblivion. But yeah; White-Gold is conquered, Ayleid nobles remain extant, then the Alessians coup, make Ayleids illegal; they leave for Valenwood and High rock save for a small number who remain to fight in the Battle of Glenumbria Moors and apparently retreat to a tribal culture in the wilds afterward. If you believe Kier-Jo Chorvak, that is, which I'm not sure I do. Could be mild propaganda; it was only early Second Era.
