I keep Daggerfall installed on my laptop and still play it. My favourite all time TES game by far, although Skyrim may just topple it now Nah, still not toppled :P

Dungeons were freakin` HUGE like the world, sounds were terrifying, when you came face to face with an Ancient Lich or Vampire, you RAN for your life!

Good memories :D

Heck yes I still play Daggerfall.

Still the best game in my opinion. Bigger world than is even possible with modern games, infinite character possibilities, intriguing and challenging main quest with multiple endings, and interesting, deep, rewarding, and numerous factions to join and work up through the ranks.

Occasionally, yes. :) Dungeon crawling is still more enjoyable in that game than in any of the later games.

If you played Daggerfall you'll realise Morrowind was just as much "dumbed down" as the recent games.

I've dowloaded it pair days ago and trying to get used to the graphics and system (well, I'm a big fan of Might an Magic series, so it's not that hard for me).
Although, while it's a bit offtopic - is there a way to launch it on windows, without dosbox? or with better graphic/resolution/fullscreen mode (like in this video. (well, xcept for lowering my screen resolution in windows to 640x380)

I've played it, and still play it. Currently going back to play it in the evenings as part of research on old classic RPGs with procedural content.

I think Daggerfall is the only game where I have managed to die, often, in the first dungeon. (Where you start.) Not really a fan of the glitchy 3D. Nothing like having a bat or something get stuck on your head and locking you in place.

DOSBox.

I tried to play Arena earlier today, however my craptop couldn't run it without lagging. I doubt Daggerfall would be any better.

Yes the original cd version does run slightly "odd" on modern computers but the free full version available for download from Bethesda runs perfectly if not even better with silky smooth framerates on Dosbox.

My introduction to the elder scrolls series was Daggerfall. Love that game. Now just imagine if they could make the world of skyrim as large as highrock was depicted in Daggerfall.

I play it from time-to-time. Still have the original cd and the strategy guide... From a strictly RP/gameplay standpoint, it has yet to be bested, IMO.

Daggerfall remains the one game I play most. It only took about 5-6 months after Oblivion's release before it returned to being the TES game I play most. Chances are good that barring the first week, Skyrim (whenever I finally do get it) won't displace DF.

Daggerfall is the only TES game that really made you relieved seeing daylight after spending hours inside the bowels of a dungeon.

In all honesty, I'll admit that I got some of the same feeling from Morrowind's Arkngthand, though that was really only the first time I played it, and of course, that's but a single dungeon. The rest of the game's dungeons were way too small.

I don't mind sprawling as long as it's 2D with a map that is actually useful.

I will grant that the very, VERY 3D nature of the maps lent exponentially to the ease of getting lost... It gets easier once you figure out the module-based nature of each map, which does tend to break the thing down into much more manageable chunks.

And of course, there are SOME particular 3D portions I'd never give up; some of the very tall chambers yielded much more interesting gameplay than I'd ever see with just flat 2D passages. Though the "spaghetti" sections... Yeah, the game probably would've been less headache-inducing without them.

I'll be starting a new game soon, to try and take my mind off the disappointment that Skyrim has caused me.

You must have a very, very old laptop for that to be the case. My old laptop is a Pentium-III from 2002 and it runs Daggerfall just fine with the correct settings.

Yeah, I still play Daggerfall. I haven't since Skyrim came out because the novelty hasn't worn off, but Daggerfall is awesome for all the reasons mentioned here.

Yeah, but do you use DOSBox? With newer computers you have to use DOSBox to run Daggerfall, and DOSBox can be pretty tough to get running smoothly depending on your machine.

I used to have an old Windows 95 machine that I bought from my old high school for $15 specifically to play Daggerfall without having to mess with DOSBox. Good times. :P

Every few years I re-install Arena and Daggerfall. Ive done so very recently. Quite enjoyable, still have my DF cdrom, but the poor thing doesnt read right most of the time. Arena was borrowed and I forgot to get it back. Thank goodness for free games.

I think Arena's the only free one. Last I checked, Daggerfall wasn't.

Nah, it's free too.

I'd like to go back and try Arena & Daggerfall sometime. Morrowind too.

With newer computers you have to use DOSBox to run Daggerfall,

The good part is that it's MOSTLY OS-dependent. Since I have a partition of Win 98SE on my aging main computer, it runs Daggerfall as flawless as can be expected... Even though the CPU's an Athlon64. The problem, though, is not the CPU so much as the video card; IIRC the Radeon X1000 series are the latest video cards supported under non-NT versions of Windows. (And only the 6000 series on the GeForce side) So anything newer would mean having to have an old video card in there just for running it.

Agreed. DF dungeons are gargantuan, you will get lost and wonder if you'll ever see daylight again. Its a real shame modern TES cant really create that feeling.

I can't play a game without modding it, so Daggerfall's starting to get frustrating. I've done some "customizing" so I can play http://ghastley.org/daggerfall/images/blossomd2.jpg and created some new outfits etc. However, creating new quests has some limitations, like not having a script function to test the player's gender or race. There are a large number of tools still around, but a number of those have stopped working on the newer OS's, so I'm doing more with a hex editor than anything else.

Right now, my Orc replaces another race, but I'm poking around to see if I can extend the number of races. I'll probably fail, because a lot will be obscurely coded into the engine, but it's fun hunting around in the files.

Nice work; looks exactly what an Orc would look like if they're indeed a choosable race in Daggerfall. Professional done.

I also modded mines because I was bored, but very poor in quality. Made a http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee350/Qawsed_Asap/Vulpini_Daggerfall.jpg last summer just so I can play as her like I did in Morrowind and Oblivion (and when the Modding Community flourish with the upcoming toolset, hopefully Skyrim). I think it was dagpicg, but it made it transferring image file from dagpicg to photoshop annoying, not to mention how amazed I was when it work ingame.

That said, I think I should continue her adventure and finish up the main quest by finding that stupid letter before I go the to endgame dungeon, again.
