Anyone into dream symbols meanings

Post » Wed Feb 03, 2016 1:41 pm

Througout mylife i have had many dreams with symbols or telling me things. religious dreams and also philisophical dreams giving me advice etc

lastnight I had a new kind of dream . I dreamed i was a raven. Now I was not a bird but human form. with arms and legs etc , but also wings and the head of a raven. my skin was jet black and i had feathers.

i cant remember most of the dream but what i recall is that i cared for a woman in my dream and i was trying to tell her. and when she wanted to kiss me i was saddened because i had a beak.

so i opened my beak and where the throat should be was a human nose and mouth...and she kissed me. then i woke up.

i have never had a dream like this but i know ravens have many varied dream interpretations. alot are negative associated with death or betrayal. but on the positive side they are associated with spiritual growth , magic and expanding the mind .but its always seeing a raven...or a raven communicating with you...never one where you are the raven.

anyone out there have any thoughts on my dream? or heard anything similar in other cultures? i will be doing more research into native american dream signs in the coming days.

In norse mythology, the ravens are companions of Odin, named Huginn and Muninn (Thought and memory) and they were his eyes and ears, bringing news from the world, good as well as bad. Ravens were never seen as a negative thing in Norse mythology (you would rather know the news, than not, no matter the message, because knowing your path is strength)

However, I know nothing of dreams per se, other than they are a tool for the brain to work on experiences, thoughts and general well being through symbolic language. In sense, you are "talking" to yourself through images, feelings and situations. Never to be taken literally. There are archetypes within the dream language according to Freud Jung, so maybe look that up?

Edit; Jung instead of Freud (thanks Shoestring)

It was Carl Jung, not Freud who developed the concept of archetypes. In my experience, if you study Jung you'll have Jungian symbols crop up in dreams, and Freudian issues if you study Freud. And yes, never ever take dreams literally.

I look at dreams in a more psychological way. Was it like you were you but wearing a "Raven Suite"? Thats what I'm getting from it.

You cared for a woman. This could mean a longing for responsibility in life or wanting to be someone whom others depend on.

Kissing her could represent could mean that subconsciously your wanting some form of passion. Not necessarily love like with another person but something to be passionate about.

Being sanded about the beak with you within ( the suite theory ) could mean that your outwardly projecting something that is not true to yourself and subconsciously your upset that you just cant be you but since she kissed you, you have hope for finding some understanding.

To me it sounds like your in a rut in your life wanting to try to obtain a role of importance that you feel passionate about but your having to be something you normally wouldn't be to obtain it but you have hope that in the end it will pay off.

Am I hitting any nails?

I don't give credence to dreams.

however there are some dreams I've had in the past that were unnervingly prophetic. I tend to look at these "prediction dreams" as fanciful little mysteries, if there's a cosmic force out there, perhaps those dreams are part of that cosmic force. But I'm not going to bother worshipping or attributing tangible meaning to it.

I am of the opinion that the symbol language of dreams is unique to each individual. A Raven in my dreams might mean something different than a Raven in your dreams. I believe it is up to each of us to interpret our own dreams, if we wish to do so.

You like flying and Edgar Allen Poe, quoth says me, and sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar, no matter who said it, sometimes it is what it is with no meaning attributed to it other than your imagination manifesting itself in your sleep, you could spend your life attempting to interpret your dreams and nightmares, people dont seem to differentiate between them , and realise the one you keep having about falling off a cliff is because your afraid of heights, but obscure ones like this are something to look at more so as you have an active imagination and nothing else, if i had that dream id enjoy it just because its interesting.

I don′t even try to anolyze dreams, too cryptic. But I do know that symbols rule life more than any written law does and I try to be conscious about that.

The best explanation of most dreams is your brain unloading recent thoughts, occurrences, and events into a fluidly changing narrative. I haven't had good dreams in decades. I only have nightmares.

In your dream were you a three eyed Raven? If so, you might have to go north of the Wall to find the answer you seek. :)

I don't know much about sleep/dream research, so take what I say with a grain of salt, buuuut...

In psychology, the psychodynamic approach tends to place a lot more importance on dreams (at least from what I know of the approach - it's not an area I'm knowledgeable on). Things like falling are often proported to represent a perceived loss of control, chasing dreams are supposed to mean running away from a problem, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, the most common neuropsychological/cognitive theories on dreams states that they're caused by the activation of neurons that have recently been primed in the brain. So, say you spend a lot of time during a day thinking about bacon. The neurons in your brain that represent "bacon" or any thoughts/associations you have related to it, even at a level beyond your level of explicit awareness, would become primed/activated via a spread of activation. The effect of priming in your brain would make those associated neurons/synaptic connections likely to show up in your dreams, and the inactivation of much of the prefrontal cortex during R.E.M. sleep is what causes many of the dreams to lack any consistent logic or order.

Essentially, from what I've been taught, most psychologists believe that dreams tend to be devoid of any actual symbolism/meaning, especially considering that during the time in which we're dreaming, we're largely incapable of forming any consistent logic.

I'm sure a neurophysiologist could probably explain the above in a much more terse and biologically in-depth way than I did, but yeahhhhh.

So in short, no, I don't try to decode my dreams, although I do believe they can certainly show one how important a particular thought element is to one's self.

I used to have continuous dreams like that, they would pick up where they left off the previous night and I could have made a map of the dreamscape, in fact I think I still could. Would be fun to model it in 3DS Max.

The brain is neat that way.

I have a theory that dreams are started by the fractalish images that happen behind your eyes and your Temporal Lobe doing p
areidolia* as you sleep and the brain trying to make meaning of that. And for blind people the equivalent of that, whatever it is and the mind makes a story of it.

Sometimes I run into symbols over and over for a while, I don't know if it is that they appear more in my world for a time or that I just start to pick up on it more and they were there all along and I just didn't notice like how the Fibonacci sequence is everywhere you just have to notice it.

Well... I had a proper dream for the first time in a long while last night, it was a bit weird though.

I was being followed around everywhere by some bloke with a goats head. No one else could see him except me. He'd just sort of float around all day watching me go to college and stuff. That was literally it.

So yeah, dunno if that meant anything, but it was pretty cool (and creepy) as I don't normally have proper dreams like that. :D

Wow. I wish I had your dreams. Mine our way normal in comparison

Yeah, I once had a similar dream. Except the jacuzzi was full of naked women, lol.

I have often wondered the meaning behind this one.

My dreams usually tend to be some kind of... adventure-esque dream. The other day I had a dream akin to something from Lost, with a plane crash leading to a few of us surviving, and becoming government test subjects for superpowers and obstacles/tests that we had to go through, in a prison-camp island type setting. I eventually escaped with like 3 others, but the other like... 10ish people died throughout the experience.

I've had a few disturbing dreams in the past. Like, with me driving a car down a really creepy road, with a lot of dead trees, on a really grayscale-esque cloudy day. At some point I see some really creepy, pale dude with dark circles around his eyes and a black mohawk, with the rest of his head bald and... vein-covered, and sharp, long, black fingernails. The person started staring at me creepily, and then lunged at my car door, plunging his claw-like hands through the car door and into my ribs. It felt real and I woke up with my ribs hurting/feeling weird for probably a good hour after waking up. I had another stabbing dream in the past that felt real/weird feeling lasted after I woke up for awhile, but it was just some random person with a knife, and I don't remember too much of the dream.

A lot of my dreams also involve being chased by some group or individual and having to elude them/escape them.

I have books on Jung and symbolism. I think the subject is really fascinating. I try to build in subtle symbolism to foreshadow events in different stories I'm working on. Symbolism in writing is a really great tool, especially when you are working on Fantasy Fiction. Those stories are ripe with symbolism.

Just think about a scene from The Lord of the Rings... The red sun rises, blood has been spilled last night... stuff like that is just amazing in my opinion.

I also remember I had a very strange dream over 20 years ago (sure, sure I've dreamed since then lol). What stands out about this dream is that I recorded it, because I left a lasting impression when I woke up. Your subconscious is constantly bombarded with impressions and feelings that we don't even acknowledge in our waking hours. The mind processes these things while we sleep. So, you could have seen a raven, thought about your first love etc. and it all comes together in a strange mish-mash in your dreams.

We all carry a lot of deep rooted insecurities around with us that we don't even know we have, add to all of this all the baggage of our past, the bombardment of news stories, impressions collected day in day out... no wonder our mind conjures some strange imagery at night.

The brain, with its many pathways, still holds mysteries that we have yet to discover.
