Anyone Notice the Downhill Slope of Movies Lately?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:18 am

IMO, ever since the lord of the rings, and pirates movies, it seems that movies are just beng made as fast as possible. I remember when it took forever to make a movie, and the actors actually had time to perfect their lines before it was shoved on to the big screen. It seems now that they introduce a movie and then a month later it is out in theaters and they totally svck. I have thought a lot of movies were going to be great, such as the Green Hornet and the newest harry potter but they were badly put together IMO. The best movies so far for me have been "How to Train Your Dragon," which I thought was going to be a silly kids movie, and then there was "The Eagle." Even The Eagle wasn't all it could've been. Whats going on??

I honestly loved The Expendables, but I know its no great piece of cinema. Yeah I agree. Comedy for sure has gone down hill.

Noticed the decline in the mid 90's. Movies now adays are being done faster digitally and hit dvd release within 3 months of being out in theaters.

What do you mean lately? This has been going on since the 80's. Crap movie after crap movie after crap movie. Now it's crap remake or sequal after crap remake or sequal. Hollywood has nothing Original anymore. Just like WWE wrestling, it's all the same story with different characters.

While I like to see sequals for some movies, somethings should not be touched like Bladerunner for example.

Holding judgement 'til BioShock is out. I mean sure, they could have BUILT Rapture by now with the kinda money they're using and the time it's taken to make the thing. But still... BioShock... movie... without Euw Bull at the helm? Could be good. Me thinks too many freaks in suits on huge salaries are trying to urinate on the premise, and change things, and get a hand in to appeal to some non-existent audience that died out or grew up in the nineteen-bloody-seventies or something. Parasites the lot of them. Parasites trying to mess up BioShock the movie, I reckon that's why it's taking so long! 'What is the difference between a man and a parasite? A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?' A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbours think?' A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God... '

Those crappy 80's movies define the decade... Especially the lax ratings of the time nudity in PG-13 movies??

Sturgeon's Law strikes again!

Aye, folks always react like this when they get old enough to realise how true said law is. I'm actually kind of amazed how well people have forgotten about, say, horrible 80s comedy movies. Ever heard of Hot to Trot? Yeah, thought so.

There is something to this, but it's not what most people think. There's a couple of factors at play (plus no doubt several more that I'm simply not thinking of). First is the simple fact is that, as the industry has grown, so too has the number of movies produced. Given a relatively constant and proportional rate of gold to dung, there will indeed be a bigger pile of dung. Second, and not to be underrated, is the Hollywood marketing machine. What movies does it most heavily promote? Not (necessarily) the good ones, but the ones it thinks will make good money. And those tend to be vacuous, insipid popcorn flicks with lots of explosions, fart jokes, and impalings (though usually not all at once, unless it's a Wayans brothers movie).

Cartoons are where it's at. Every one of those "Pixar" style digital films I've seen has been fantastic. How To Train Your Dragon, Tangled, The Incredibles, Wall-E...all of them great movies.

Edit: I even liked Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. :P

I've just seen Black Swan and The King's Speech so no, I haven't noticed a decline. I do notice much nostalgia in the OP however. And seriously, if you go to Harry Potter and expect a good film than you're bound to be disappointed.

I'm very selective when it comes to movies. It takes something on the level of "Avatar" or "Titanic" to get me to a theater.
OK...OK...My wife wanted to see J. Depp do the "Mad Hatter". I obliged.
I can even wait for "True Grit" to come out on DVD.
The rest of the current films.....meh.
I can't think of a single other one that even interests me.

Saw kings speech and thought it was meh. Saw inglorious Basterds and while i REALLY wanted to enjoy it, i was utterly bored. Its more of a preference than anything but the general quality of movies has gone down.

Really no, there have always been crappy games, and there have always been good games, you just forget about the bad games quicker.

Pffft. There haven't been any good films since the Seven Samurai. I don't know what you are doing thinking anything past 54 was good.

The style of comedy has changed, which isnt bad, its just different. Also I don't like how instead of props most horror/action movies just get lazy and use CGI....well, not all of them.

Aye. We will never reach the same level of craftmanship as Manos: The Hands of Fate, Laserblast or Plan 9 from Outer Space.

I don't know what you're talking about, I find good movies all the time. Did you actually see anything this last year or did you just look at the trailers and decide that everything was worthless?

When you say pirates, you surely don't mean the Pirates of the Caribbean, do you? Johnny Depp has captured yet another soul with his wit and charm. They're on what, their fifth installment now?

Aye. We will never reach the same level of craftmanship as Manos: The Hands of Fate, Laserblast or Plan 9 from Outer Space.
