Before he snuffed it (I'm assuming he did), Divayth Fyr was old enough to remember the Dwemer walking around. In real life that would be akin to a man old enough to have known Ramses II. A couple of centuries may as well be two decades. Less even. Sure, that's an extreme example, but then again so are most of our characters aren't they? How many of us have piles of artifacts we can't possibly sell and have completed just about every quest there is? Compare our accomplishments in these games to that of your average NPC. It's like putting a pot-smoking kid working at Wal-Mart against the unstoppable pillar of manliness known as Bear Grylls.
Granted, you'd be limited to playing an elf, but from what I've seen, that's the most popular choice anyway. And I'm not entirely sure on that bit either, as I don't know how long the Khajiit and Argonians can live.
As for me, I'm an Orc and Nord player until I die, so the time gap would need to be significantly smaller (or shorter, whichever it is) for me to do this. Unless I decided it was okay to re-write the lore to suit my playing needs. Or make my character some form of undead, which I'm not into, not in these games at least.
