Anyone still play NV now that Skyrims out?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 9:51 am

Everyones entitled to their opinion...

I find the story compelling... the whole relationship between the Empire, the Storm Cloaks and the Thalamor... the rise of the Altmeri Dominion and the subsequent war with the empire. The position of Hammerfell on the treaty...

And dont forget... Skyrim isnt over....

If Skyrim releases some DLC with memorable characters, meaningful choice, ect, then I will forgive it for all of its sins. ;)

Well for me it's basically like this, I enjoy playing different games for different reasons.
When I play an RPG I want action and consequence, I want options, I want dialogue and I want great writing.
But when I play an action/adventure game I just want some dumb fun.
Like in Borderlands, I basically just ran around shooting Jason Voorhees and looted weapons, it's not the most intelligent gameplay but it's fun.
So Skyrim? I just play it for what it is, not as an RPG, I don't consider it an RPG at all.
I play it as a dumb fun game, dungeon crawling, combat, dikeing around, that's what Skyrim is all about to me.
It's plot? I don't really care about that.
It's characters? I don't really care about that.
It's combat heavy design? I don't really care about that.

I just roll out with a character and kill stuff for loot.
Very basic, very simple and very enjoyable.
as far as consequences, there aren't really any consequences in new vegas any different than skyrim, actually in skyrim there are more consequences, like if you help mardock kill the guards in markarth, you'll be attacked the next time you go there, so thats a consequence, there's all sorts of consequences in the skyrim quests, depending on who's side you're on or who you help, so not sure where you're getting this no consequence stuff in skyrim, if you're talking about the story, well in new vegas the story ends after the battle at the dam, so the only "consequences" are just in your imagination after the game is over. so the game itself really doesn't have these consequences you talk about, whoever's side you take, the game plays out the same and nothing anywhere changes.

Memorable characters like the ones from Oblivion and Morrowind? Who were they? Seriously... because I dont remember.

And I dont remember any meaningful choices to make in Oblivion.... were there...?

EDIT*

I know this sounds like sarcasim, but I'm serious.

Another comment on The Elder Scrolls overall: I hate the names.
Dungeon names, shop names, character names. I've played 200+ hours and I still can barely remember anything.
I guess it's about familiarity.
Was a couple of months since I played New Vegas and I still remember El Dorado Dry Lake, Searchlight Airport, Harpers Shack, Mick And Ralphs, Grub And Gulp, Ghost, Anthony, Davidson et cetera.
I've forgotten some stuff since it's been months.
But when I play New Vegas I remember things.
In Elder Scrolls games I barely ever remember things.
Cause while dungeons are better designe this time around they are still a repetitive mess, and remembering random Draughr dungeon 2's name and random Draughr dungeon 25's name and what separates them is not easy.

Worst though is Orc names. It seems like they have a limited keyboard with a certain number or keys that fit in an Orc name, then someone slams their hand down on this keyboard and whatever is typed in is an Orc's name.

Names just seem way too random.
Like Bethesda doesn't even care about naming their characters anything memorable.
Maybe it's that nothing really stands out for me to care about their names.
But I've been traveling with this Orc girl for a while and her name is... Bur...gakh? Burgakh? Burkagh? I mean, she's been with me for like 30 gameplay hours and I still can't remember her name really.

Alexander1023, You're kidding me right?
In Skyrim a lot of quest NPC's can't be killed, you can join every faction, you can pick locks with a lockpicking skill of 1.
In New Vegas the reputation system will work against you if you kill faction members.
If you help Powder Gangers in Goodsprings then Doc, Sunny and whatsherface dies.
If you kill the Great Khans in Boulder City then they'll kill you at RRC.
If you side with Legion you cannot help BOS.

There is a [censored]load more AnC in New Vegas than it is in Skyrim.

In terms of meaningful choices, no there really weren't any. Because the writing svcked then too. (Although Morrowind had great Faction quest choices)

But in terms of characters:

Morrowind: Divayth Fyr, Yagrum, Vivec, Almalexia, Caius Cosades, King Helseth, Gentleman Jim Stacey, hell even Fargoth. (I spelled a lot of those names wrong)
Oblivion: Ocheeva, Lucien Lachance, Mankar Camoran, The Emperor, Owyn, hell even the adoring fan in his own little way
Skyrim: Delphine

If I were to do the same with New Vegas, there would be paragraphs of names.

I agree with this actually. After Oblivion completely ignored politics despite being set in the seat of the Empire, following the assassination of the Emperor and during the crowning of a new one, it was nice to see some political intrigue in Skyrim. I'm certainly interested in seeing where that story goes.

There weren't any, but Fallout 3 had Ashur so it's not like Bethesda is incapable of creating memorable characters.

And I dont remember any meaningful choices to make in Oblivion.... were there...?

Not really, deciding on how to kill the Adoring Fan was the most meaningful choice I ever made in Oblivion.

I dont find any of the characters any more or less memorable than the ones in Skyrim.... and Almalexia and Vivec live on in Skyrim as they will in every Elderscrolls game to come... theyre a part of the Lore.

I think ya just have some pretty rosey glasses for Morrowind and Oblovion... and thats not a bad thing... Theres alot of players who started with Oblivion and think its the greatest game of all time... the ones who started with Morrowind feel the same way about that game.

A list of memorable characters N.V. v.s. Elderscrolls would be pointless... thats one of the areas that N.V. excelles in.... hands down.

Epic world, lore, character design and roleplay are where Elderscrolls excells.

Theyre both great games.

Agreed, they're both great games. And I also agree that TES has the best lore around.

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED MORROWIND, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PUT STUFF IN SPOILER TAGS

But isn't Almalexia dead? And Vivec missing?

I really enjoyed Oblivion which has so far been my only journey into the lore of the Elder Scrolls, but from my relatively brief 100+ hour view I'm going to have to disagree with that last sentence. I found the lore to be really over the top even for a fantasy game and it really just throws it all in your face so it makes the beginning of Oblivion a sink or swim moment. It's actually one of the reasons why I started and stopped Oblivion right outside of the first cave the first time I played it. I got used to the lore, but there have been others that have interested me a lot more, that's my opinion anyway.

Oblivion has always been the worst TES game (besides Skyrim, although the quality between the two is debatable). If you want an Elder Scrolls game with good lore that you might enjoy, try Morrowind or (if you like older games) Daggerfall. Great dialogue, lore, and back-stories which expand the world. Oblivion is child's play by comparison.

I tried that approach, but I just couldn't handle the repetitiveness and the feeling of futility.

I have to agree (with a couple of previous posts) that the political aspects were indeed interesting, though. Too bad it felt mostly being on the surface, or at times, too much at the side (and never really in the middle of the focus). The game would've been so much more interesting if it had revolved around the civil war and choosing your side rather than yet another god coming to destroy the world.

Well some repetitive things can still be fun.
Like in Borderlands, what kept me going there was the unique weapons to be found.
In Skyrim it can become repetitive but it takes longer for me than say Oblivion did.
Bomberman for example is very repetitive with it's gameplay, it introduces some new powerups and enemies in the singleplayer after each couple of maps but the multiplayer was mostly repetitive, but it was still fun because it was handled in a way that made it challenging and unexpected.
Skyrim... I don't know why it keeps me going. I guess I just like the whole viking setting. Like I said, dumb fun.

But, I can't stand Dwemer Ruins, they are Oblivion dungeons, so incredibly boring, tedious, long and repetitive.
