Anyone still play NV now that Skyrims out?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 10:49 pm

Yeah I still play NV. And honestly I'm already tired of Skyrim with just a month of playing it. But as of right now I'm going to take a break from NV and wait till the Ultimate Edition comes out and I'll pick it up for PC. I imagine the game + all of the DLC + mods will at least last me 1-2 years (or more). Or until Obsidian makes a new Fallout game.

... when Obsidian asked Beth if they could do a FO game ...

Slight correction here. Bethesda asked Obsidian if they had interest in making a Fallout game, not the other way around.

It's hard to say skyrim was "borring" when I put over 150 hrs into it but, it was boring. I feel the only thing that made ne even pick up skyrim in the first place was due to a lacking of new fallout material. It seems that I would always conquer through that one more quest in hopes of it actually giving me that sense of accomplishment like I got with Fallout NV.
I really hope the next fallout grabs my attention like NV did, seriously 6 complete characters that all easily hit the 75hr mark...... That's a FREAKN GREAT GAME!!
Oh and another thing that's been bugging me(not related) is all this console bashing. How the he'll is it my fault that things are wrong with Bethesdas games due to the fact they made it for a console and not just PC?? Iv read more than a few times ppl saying they had to "dumb it down" and such nonsense to make sure the "console users" would be happy? I personally would love to have a more intriguing conversation with my npc buddies. I just don't understand how putting a pc game on console changes anything except graphics(which are soooo sixy on pc)
Either way I really hope the new fallout(whenever it comes ) grabs my attention as New Vegas did. Such an amazing game*

Well, the Obsidian director of NV was openly saying Beth's engine is the cause of all the issues that plague both NV and Skyrim. That generally doesn't bode well to work together in the future. Not to mention Todd Howard specifically stated that when Obsidian asked Beth if they could do a FO game he said it had to be out west so it wouldn't interfere with their version of the franchise, which makes it sound like FO4 will be fully internally Beth. Also, and I'm not sure where they got this info or if it is true, but the FO4 FAQ at the Vault states FO4 will be made by the same team that did FO3 and won't include any ex Black Isle/Obsidian team members.

You've got that all backwards.

Sawyer said the freezing was due to an issue with the size of the games, the engine and how the PS3 works, and Bethesda went to Obsidian and asked them to make the title. That they had to do a game on the west coast? That's exactly where they'd want to do it...

Yeah pretty much all skyrim has going for it is eyecandy. You can get almost the same effect with a modded NV. (Hi rez textures Enhanced shaders etc. etc.)

skyrim is a way better game...right off the bat, new vegas is a desert and not many buildings or dungeons in it...none of the enemies respawn for the most part..and when they do its the same 2 geckos or powder gangers with lead pipes, hardly any super mutants to fight or any good human enemies for that matter, there's not really any good battlegrounds in new vegas either, its just desert, no place to hide or stalk enemies...FO3 had all the city areas to battle it out in, hiding and sneaking around etc...but the new vegas game world is just too static, boring and not dynamic, no random patrols or random encounters to speak of...there's not even a comparison....as far as open world games, bethesda wins hands down every time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but combat in the open-world of Skyrim typically includes:

1) Bears
2) Sabre Cats
3) Bandits

Like 90% of the time that's all you're gonna see, so I find it odd you're criticizing NV's enemy variety when Skyrim literally only has ~12 enemy types roaming the open world. Bears, wolves, sabre cats, ice wraiths, spriggans, human enemies, skeletons, fire atronachs, trolls, ice trolls, dragons, those centipede things, 90% of which become one shots that can't hurt you. Not to say enemies don't become one-shots in New Vegas, but New Vegas feels smarter in the sense that AT LEAST, the enemies can one-shot you back. You have that free sniper shot to one-shot them, but if you screw up, you're done. Skyrim you just take the weapon and armor perks and eventually you're Jesus Christ.

First off, are you saying that Skyrim is a better game "Cause desertz are boring"
If that's the best argument you can come up with for why Skyrim is better than New Vegas then apparently you missed the whole quests/dialogue/morally grey choices/interesting factions/balancing/memorable NPCs that really defined New Vegas.
Skyrim either lacks or screwed up all of those, and while it has "more than just deserts" it doesn't have the elements that make it a really memorable game.

snip

This is true as well, even the exploration in Skyrim can become repetitive and dull.

So what does that leave for Skyrim?
1. It's a beautiful looking game, Bethesda did a really nice job with the environment.
2. It's fun to play (for a while), with the finisher moves, dragon fights, etc.

Other than that I'm not seeing much to the game. The dialogue is awful, the quests usually involve "Hey, could you go get that sword I left in that cave?" and then you get it for them they're all like "Whoa thanks man, say do you want to be guild master?"

The NPCs in Skyrim aren't that memorable, in fact I'll probably remember my conversions with the Dark Brotherhood's door more than any conversions with actual NPCs.

Yes, I just started a new character a few days ago, I can play this game over and over again, I don't know what it is. It's just fun. I find a lot of stuff about FONV more intriguing than Skyrim. Bethesda has "dumbed-down" Skyrim too much IMO. It's a fun game, but Bethesda's laziness has cried wolf with this title. I can play FONV over and over again and I still get that "Pulled in Immersion" feeling that I only got from Skyrim the first time around.

Skyrim, is a shallow, hack and slash, r e t a r d e d folly.
Pretty faced, air-head.
Aimed at, 8 - 18 yr olds

What I most disliked about Skyrim, was that we had to share it with players that arn't worthy (COD n00bs).
I feel, a hardcoe Mode will serve to separate the wheat from the chaff.
eg.
Skyrim, with; eat 'n' drink, no/limited fast travel, more realistic carry weight, heavy fatigue penalties,..ect
If 'Casual' gamers want to play TES they can resort to Easy mode and spam through the quests or lvls wtvr...
But it's not right to limit 'hardcoe' vets to play a babied title, because others in the gaming community want what they want.
It's ... Communist - mass production. Instead of high quality.

F:NV is the best!

How come, ... The people that 'luv' Skyrim are the idiots 99% of the time..?
(Fan Boys... Ugh!)
Some of the tripe they come up with in an attempt to defend their precious hack 'n' slash is ... Lame.

skyrim is a way better game" Fallacy "...right off the bat, new vegas is a desert and not many buildings or dungeons in it" It's a Nuclear Wasteland... most of the buildings are destroyed and Dungeons went out of vogue in the 18th century - 400 years before F:NV. Said title does have many caves though and numberous vaults, ect... "...none of the enemies respawn for the most part.." Fallacy "and when they do its the same 2 geckos or powder gangers with lead pipes," Clearly you are being unrealistic in an attempt to demean NV... and you don't know what you're talking about. Powder Gangers don't respawn. "hardly any super mutants to fight or any good human enemies for that matter, there's not really any good battlegrounds in new vegas either, its just desert, no place to hide or stalk enemies" ... "...FO3 had all the city areas to battle it out in" What does FO3 have to do with Skyrim?? how does the fact FO3 is urban make Skyrim better than NV?? ", hiding and sneaking around etc...but the new vegas game world is just too static, boring and not dynamic," as oppossed to Skyrim... LOL wtvr... "no random patrols or random encounters to speak of" Assassins "...there's not even a comparison.." I agree. Skyrim is tripe. NV is The Daddy! "..as far as open world games, bethesda wins hands down every time." Fan Boy!
F:NV is better than anything Bethesda, has done.

To come here and troll the message - Skyrim is best!
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

The quoted individual gives no reason for Skyrim, being better, they just tried to nit-pick F:NV.

P.S. Boycott Skyrim DLC

Hm :) its funny me. I thought it will happen. So i see lot of writes here from lot of players who dont know really what mean rpg. Guess Skyrim is first rpg in their life and they share the mind here.
it is fun really.
Hm i think FNV has about 5-6 different end and FNV has companions who talk with your character and respond your character's decision. Skyrim hasnt one neither.
For example i told a aspect of rpg now. I think. And there are some aspect to tell Fallut new vegas is better rpg than Skyrim.
And Skyrim? Skyrim's npc looks better than FNV sure. Skyrim has fatalities, and etc. But these arent aaspect to rpg. And radiant story? so it is first step only.
Give you quest to go anywhere to steal something and back, for example. you will get tired it after 10 times.
Yeah if you are a new in world of rpg you will continue to enjoy than a player who is old rp gamer. It is a huge different.
Skyrim good game but in lot of aspect of rpg are weaker than Fallout New Vegas.
Fallout 3 wasnt really rpg otherwise. Fallout 3 was a action game with rpg elements but sure i really like Fallout 3 too. I think fallout 3 is better than Skyrim than game.
So in my aspect Witcher 2 is the best rpg in this year. Sorry Bethesda.

And yeah went back to Fallout new vegas.
i hope new addons give more things to Skyrim world. more quest with diversity than quest of redguard women for example. Give companions with story and quest and for example there will be more adventurers in taverns to talk only and etc, etc. or in a stituation you are sitting in tavern and a other adventurer step to your table to ask help him(her), etc, etc.
So then i will really feel the world lives and not only a killing machine game.
Hm guess the problem is Fallout new vegas to brought new aspects in a open world game and it is a evidence so possible to do a open world game to rpg truly.
So the expectations are huge now Bethesda

So to say something positive.. I really enjoyed quest of thief factions i think it was a good story with some interesting diversity unfortunatelly it was linear story a bit. there werent options to choice side for example.

Ah i dont know it posibble to give really meaning to speech skill or character. As it works in Fallout new vegas so you are able to fdo a quest without kill if you have high charisma.

I almost bought Skyrim during the steam sale for 33% off, but I decided to purchase Plants v. Zombies, Orcs Must Die!, and a bunch of stuff off GoG instead.

Stupidly, I succumbed and bought Skyrim in the Steam Sale. I've just uninstalled it.

For one thing it runs like crap on my PC. Low, medium, high - it makes no difference. The only thing that helps is putting the resolution way down, but the mouse still feels laggy when I'm getting a decent FPS.

I got as far as doing the quest to 'retrieve the golden claw'. I'm not sure why it was wanted because the NPC who gave me the quest only had one line of dialogue. I then then proceeded on a hack and slash through a linear dungeon with enemy placement as predictable as Doom 3.

Trying to navigate the UI was just making me angry, the map is entirely useless, and the game crashing was the last straw - so I uninstalled.

Maybe I'll give Skyrim another go in the Spring when I upgrade my hardware, it's patched, and some mods are out, but at the moment I still have a couple of NV DLC to play through (and the DLC I've played so far have been the most engrossing part of NV).

i liked skyrim. it's a very good game. the exploration, the gameworld, absolutely amazing.

but when that luster finally wears thin, there's really nothing left. combat is still horrible. clunky, semi unresponsive controls, poor hit detection, and it simply doesn't satisfy me. sure it's better than oblivion (not saying much), but if dead island has better melee combat something is seriously wrong. people say there is no such thing as balance in a single player game, but there definitely is. and skyrim doesn't have it.

but the major killer of skyrim for me is story and characters. this is the achilles heel of bethesda. oblivion, FO3, and skyrim have the worst cliched stories told by the most uninteresting (at best) or most unlikable characters possible. in no way at any time did i care for the characters or story in the slightest; and that goes for all three.

i'm trying to think of a character like Fantastic or House or Caeser and not one comes remotely close. there are no quests in skyrim like helping cpl betsy (i don't hurt anymore? i can't quite recall) that are short, simple, and emotionally powerful. skyrim has the short and simple part down though. finishing one companion quest in new vegas is more satisfying than doing everything in skyrim. skyrim does have some creative quests, it's just FNV does it a million times better.

that's why i'll be coming back to new vegas. despite the gameworld not being as flashy as skyrim, the story and characters are so good i look forward to meeting all of them again. and steam is having a sale on new vegas and i want to try out mods this time around (ps3). in fact, the only thing i wish FNV had more of was combat and exploration; which is where pc and mods come in. plus i don't mind boosting FNV's sales so hopefully obsidian gets to write another fallout.

I've played the hell out of F:NV and still find myself coming back, switching between FNV and Skyrim. I just bought a whole bunch of other games though, some good, some not so good (My purchases were Borderlands GOTY edition, Bulletstorm, Dragon Age origins ultimate edition, Heavenly Sword, Hunted: The Demon's Forge, Mirror's Edge, and Nier) and I gave most of them a little try yesterday. Honestly I'm tired from staying up all night to install them all. In addition i've still got a backlog of a few games i've yet to really sit down with.

Wait..is that really you gabe? Not sure if sarcasm.

Sarcasm?
New Vegas is horrible.
I can't do what I want without it having major reprucussions(?).
It's way too story oriented.
Have barely any enemies to kill.
Barely have any dungeons.
And in order to get a lot of perks and make a character that can do everything (which should be possible in an RPG) then I need to download 5 DLC's.

Skyrim still has that [censored] perk system so I can't get everything to become really great unless I use mods.
But at least it doesn't svck! Like Bug Vegas.

The game was poorly optimized, you're not the only one with this problem.

Yup, as usual Bethesda forgot to give the PC users a decent, functional UI for a keyboard and mouse so we're forced to fight with a shoddy, impractical console UI.

I played Skyrim for a bit over 100 hours and half the time all I did as I played was fantasize about FO4. I hope they dont give FO4 the Skyrim treatment. I'd be very disapointed to hear Obsidian isnt making it too. NV is superior to Skyrim in every way except for graphics. I got bored with Skyrim and started a new NV character , as I had never played any of the DLC. Loved Dead money on my old character and looking foward to playing all 4 NV DLC on my new guy. Ill just wait until Skyrim gets a few patches and DLC before going back to it again. It just feels incomplete on some things, and overdone in others, plus no harcore mode? How can you give us that in NV and then take it away? You KNOW its mostly the same people playing both your games , so why take it away? It was optional in NV, why not in Skyrim? Why all the food and recipes, when your character doesnt need to eat and cooking doesnt level up? Why do oponents crouch and beg for mercy, (That you cant grant) just to get up and attack cause their health bar went up some?Thats the kind of incomplete Im talking about. Skyrim just overwhelms you with bite size repetitive content until you just dont care anymore. Its still a great game that I will go back to, but it cant measure up to NV in any way but the graphics.

killing deathclaws isn't combat, there's far more human enemies in skyrim and well over 200 dungeones, there is 1000 times more content in skyrim, over 400 quests and thats not even counting the never ending radiant quests, the towns and cities are way better designed, well over 50 followers you can use,..you don't have the same exact enemy respawning in every location every time, skyrim is much more fluid and dynamic of a gameworld, the random factor isn't even present in new vegas. and skyrim doesn't have some dumb ending where the credits roll after the last battle...skyrim has much better battles than that last battle in new vegas, just clearing out labyrinthian alone is like 10 times bigger than that last battle in new vegas. none of the dungeons in skyrim are small, most of em are pretty elaborate and there's lots of enemies to kill, blackreach cave system alone is more content than all the buildings in new vegas put together. there's also around 500 locations in skyrim. and they're not dumb locations like a wrecked car or a shack.

I don't think anyone would argue that Skyrim's gameworld and locations and dungeons and so forth aren't quite large and expansive and good-looking, with lots of enemies and critters to fight and kill, when compared to NV. But, I notice that nowhere in your post do you mention how much better and more interesting the story and quest writing is than that of NV, with all its great variety of different RPG dialogue choices and different ways of doing the quests, and how captivating all of those followers are to talk to and interact with, etc....

So, agreed it's a great, big open world exploration game with stuff everywhere to see and fight... but is it a good RPG with tons of replayability interest once you've seen all the places and scenery that the gameworld has to offer, killed all the things there is to kill?

Fallout isn't the TES. If you like exploring dungeons and doing "over 400" repetitive fetch quests then keep playing Skyrim and stop complaining about New Vegas just because it isn't the same as Skyrim.

Your argument is about as valid as me going over to the Skyrim general discussion and saying "there's no post nuclear desert survival in skyrim and fighting dragons isn't combat so Fallout games are better"
Fallout and TES are different. And they need to stay that way. So stop complaining that New Vegas svcks because it isn't Skyrim.
