Anyone wish it WASN'T Skyrim?

I voted for Valenwood. They could have an enormous variety of types of forest (Swampy, jungle, temperate, spooky, rainforest etc.) and the terrain is fairly unknown so there's plenty of freedom with that. High canopies and cities in trees means 3-dimensional gameplay, going up as well as along the base of the map, lots of interesting Bosmer culture to explore, ape people with unique culture, moving trees. It sounds very cool.

well i was playing oblivion the other day and i saw that the dragons would have fit in better where the orcs live in becuase of the name, i can't remember the name specifically but i remember that it had dragonsomething in it.

Orcs hail from the Wrothgarian Mountains, Dragontail Mountains, or Orsinium. Of which Dragontail Mountains is in Hammerfell, and the other two in High Rock.

I've always wanted to see the spectacular and magical Summerset Isles. I would rather they save it for the last province, because I could wait until technology improves. In the past the Nords were my least favorite race, but Skyrim's savage and I dare say viking culture is powerful and intriguing. I'm excited no matter what province comes up! It's going to be great!

Black Marsh can be a very interesting place. And of course much bigger than it was in the third era.

Well, I'm depressed from all the snow we had this winter (still have where I live), so I would love to visit the tropical beaches of Summerset Isle :P

Nor did I say they would. The executives and accountants set the deadline, the budget and requirements for projected sales. Those things limit what the designers can do. They have to churn out a product on schedule, under budget and with guaranteed mass-market appeal. That precludes a complex and creative representation of a startlingly new world and guarantees, instead, a streamlined and relatively generic representation of a comfortable and non-challenging world.

Sadly, I have to agree. I wouldn't be surprised if this trend follows. Like it or not, a game set in Black Marsh or Elswyer might be noticeably less marketable than one set in Cyrodiil or Skyrim. Hell even Hammerfell may be a bit to foreign for many people. Im sure Todd realizes this.

First off, I'm really happy that they choose Skyrim and I think any province they would have chosen would have turned out great. That being said, in the hypothetical sense that it wasn't Skyrim, heres what I'd love to see.

1. A multi Provincial game. The best choice I think would be Elsweyr and Black Marsh. After the end of the Third Era both these Nations leave the empire, seeding a great political plot. Elsweyr would be the largest portion of the game, with it's lush forests, jungles and arid badlands. Black March is more difficult because of the terrain and the limited settlement. Most of their towns are nothing more than small settlements, and hardly anyone other than Argonians are able to live there.

2. The Black Marsh. During the fourth Era, the Ministry of Truth ( the big rock floating in the sky that was stopped by Lord Vivic) crashed and destroyed most of Vvardenfell. The Argonians then invaded, claiming the Morrowind mainlands. Depending on the scaling, this could be great Black Marsh Game, with the mainland area and broken Vvardenfell islands offering areas with larger cities and different races. Or this could just be an expansion for a larger game, like the one mentioned above.

3. Valenwood would be a great game imo and I think with all the moves towards more realistic trees, wind effects on limbs ect that had Bethesda decided to go with the Bosmers instead of the Nord, it would look just as awesome as the Skyrim screens. There was a lot of plot hints dropping about Valenwood, like the return of the Thalmor who conquered the area, and the migratory city not moving and the conflict with Elsweyr after the end of the Third Era to provide a backdrop for an epic story. A few people say the high Canopy might prove a design challenge, but I don't think so. I have no doubt that a TES will never be a "platformer" so jumping from tree to tree probably wouldn't happen. Instead I see sections of the Canopy, or even sections of the forest floor as loadable areas, like dungeons. In forests where the trees are so thick you can't move, its not hard to see a grove as a dungeon, instead of a cave.

Just my thoughts.

I wanted the game to be in the Black Marsh it was the most interesting place in my opinion. The Elder Scrolls V: Black Marsh sounds cooler and more sinister than "Sky" rim.

Well, you can look at it this way. Black Marsh can be done in the future with better tech.

Yes but I want it now. I hate waiting 5-10 years.

I voted for Valenwood because I was reading some of the lore for it and found its history and setting intriguing. Would love to encounter all those fantastical creatures, centaurs, hippogriffs and such and there would probably be a lot of Ayleid ruins and artifacts there. Just seems like there is a lot of substance to the place.

For new consoles that haven't come out yet, and for future pimped-out PCs, I'd love to see them finish off the Tamriel storyline with an all-encompassing "Elder Scrolls VI: Tamriel" and then move into one of the other continents and start expanding on the lore for that continent.

I also don't mind waiting five years for the next game. If Bethesda wants to take their time and do a game right, then that's fine by me. Seems like every TES game that comes out revolutionizes open-world RPGs one step further.

My preferences, in order, would have been: First, Black Marsh (Argonia), which seems like the most unique and interesting place for the series to visit. Elsweyr, the Summerset Isles, or Valenwood would also have been very welcome. Hammerfell might be decent, with a mix of stony and sand deserts plus scattered islands, although it's a little bit less "exotic" than the others.

I wouldn't even have minded a return to Cyrodiil if Bethesda went back and did it "right", with all of the shady politics, underhanded financial maneuvering, and dirty dealings that one would expect from the increasingly bloated and rotting core of a vast empire on the decline, yet were conspicuously absent in the last game.

After the events surrounding its near-total destruction, there's not a lot of point in re-visiting Morrowind, except perhaps as an expansion to a game in another province. Orsinium might be of vague interest, but I can't picture it holding my attention for long.

High Rock and Skyrim strike me as the least exotic and most "mundane" locations, and I didn't want to see either of them. Sadly, we're heading to Skyrim.

As cool as it would be, I don't think they'll be able to pull off going to every province. But Skyrim was actually the province I was hoping for. I love the mountains and forests- and now that they are improved from oblivion( a lot) it will really be awesome. Blackmarsh would've been cool, but Skyrim was really what I was hoping for :D :foodndrink:

I believe that the choice of Skyrim as the location for TES V was an excellent one.

It might have been interesting to observe the TES crew sitting around a conference table in their "War Room," choosing the location for TES V.

There are brief moments when I wonder what they might choose to do next. However, now most of my TES thoughts center around Skyrim, and all of its possibilities.

I didn't vote, as I believe Skyrim to be the best choice.

What if I wanted it in skyrim...? You forgot that.

Yeah, please give the option in the poll for "No" or "Skyrim", otherwise it is a biased poll. Survey making 101 :)

Anyway, seeing how I play Nords all the time except my first 2 avatars back with Morrowind....I am very happy it is Skyrim. So happy.

I personally have wanted TES:V to be set in Skyrim for years now. I posted in the TES:V Speculation threads for a very long time, and after the copyright was taken on Skyrim by Bethesda, quite a long time ago mind you, I was pretty sure it'd be set there.

Also, how can you "totally see it" being set in all of Nirn? It's not possible on the current gen consoles or PC's to be set in all of Nirn, that would take like 10 years to make a game set in all of Nirn.

And that would be IF all of Nirn was done in Oblivion's scale and detail level (probably less).

Elsweyr got my vote, largely due to its exotic desert-based setting (sand, Sphinxes, and fuzzy beasties), but I'm certainly plenty stoked to get to go to Skyrim in this next installment.

And that would be IF all of Nirn was done in Oblivion's scale and detail level (probably less).

The major downside to this is that such a game would require simply an INSANE number of man-years to complete, and would significantly delay its release for a sizable quantity of time. No developer wants to lose that amount of productivity (and revenue) in an industry so dependent upon regular, clockwork-timed releases for profitability puposes.

You could easily do a game like Arena, where one inch on the gameworld map equals dozens of miles, but to cover that same amount of territory in painstaking, down-to-the-very-last-blade-of-grass subtle detail would absolutely kill the developers.
