Anyone worried about the auto-targeting system?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 6:24 pm

Seems we're on opposite poles :)

The only way I didn't hit friendlies in combat was to not participate, so having an aid willl help.

Works pretty well. I doubt the Skyrim system will be similar but it works for OB.

I just played the Kvatch part in Oblivion where you're given some help in the form of 3 soldiers.

Or 8 if you do all the quests to get them.

I don't think that's how it is. They said they designed the magnetism for large fights so that if you have a lot of people together, enemies and comrades, then it would *slightyly* adjust the angle of the strike to hit the enemy only and leave your comrade unharmed. I don't think it will change your camera angle at all.

I don't know if I even like this. Change the AI so your comrade doesn't run right infront of you. If they are targeting the same opponent they could flank. OB's AI was too dumb in some regards. Although this "auto-targeting" might have been the easier fix, I just think it isn't necessary. Just make your comrades not turn on you if you give them a whack until there are no enemies aggroed and make it easier to yield/hug and make up.

Anyone enjoy just blocking with your shield and swinging with your sword? I enjoyed it a lot. So I'm worried about the Assassin's Creed targeting they have in the game. They mention they would have one similar to AC. I don't want any kind of help, for example if I swing my sword, and it auto hits a certain body type. I only want to hit what I'm aiming for. I hate the idea. They also said to have finishing moves which sounds really cool.

You wont be able to block all the time, so the first step in your argument about being worried about auto targeting is flawed from the outset. Skyrim's combat system is completely different from Oblivion's, its been said a lot by the press that has actually seen the game. So the combat is not "Oblivion's + auto targeting".

They said it would be more like magnetic targeting than the full blown AC style. With magnetic, its just to prevent you from swinging off target too often.

It's just something to help you not shoot arrows at your Allie. I like the idea, because in Ob they get in the way all the time :(

The AI has been enhanced to help, but it wont prevent it all the time. Plus, the magnetic targeting lets you hit enemies that might try to, well I don't know, bob and weave (hopefully enemies will try to avoid blows instead of tanking them like in OB)

I'd like to know where this idea of an Assassin's Creed style targeting system came from. I've read as much information as I can find about Skyrim, including odds and ends mentioning the autotarget feature, and never once have I come across anything that even suggested an AC style auto target. Also, how would that even work? AC is designed to be a thrid person game, you can rotate your camera freely to look at everyone around you. Although TES has a thrid person mode, it is for the most part designed to be a first person game, which would make an auto lock on very unsuitable and out of place. That being said, I think that a very light auto target could make a massive improvement; too often have I hit allies in combat when I was aiming at an enemy, if auto target can remedy this problem, I'd be chuffed.

Anyway, sorry to be so doubtful, but I'd like a source for the whole "AC auto target" thing.

At first I was a bit worried, but then I replayed Oblivion a few days ago and found some instances where it was difficult to aim even if you paly with a mouse. Namely during a forward power-strike and when fighting small, fast-moving opponents like goblins. In both cases, when the opponent would get really close to you, their latteral movement would let them enter and leave your line of sight very rapidly (imagine the cone that constitutes your vision, emanating from your eyes - an object moving at a slight distance gets in and out of it much slower than one that's up close). And since where your strikes landed depended on your line of sight, those situations demanded moving your camera around wildly just to keep your target in sight. The target magnetism should fix those situations.

If Auto Targeting will stop dumb AI companions from consantly being Killed because they run in frount of my sword mid swing like they often did in Oblivion it sounds like a great idea

I don't think auto-targeting will be on the PC version because theres no need, so I'm not worrying that much. There will most likely be a way to toggle it off to.

I voted yes, but only because I don't want it to be a permenant thing that I can't turn off. TES doesn't need this feature, hitting allies by mistake was a rare enough occurance. I am not actually worried but imo melee does not need target magnatism, its point and click so I can't fathom why any one thought that it would be too easy to miss an enemy when you are standing so close. I could understand if it was for spells and marksman but not melee.

A little concerned. I'd rather rely on my own accuracy (which is pretty darn good in my opinion).

If damage is the same no matter where you hit them (damage, not the effects on location), then I guess I'll be a little less worried. Otherwise, I'll probably turn it off, unless I'm fighting in third person (which is unlikely).

if it just affects aiming in third person mode to help you hit with melee and such, i won't be bothered.

if it affects your aim in first person mode, however, it'll be the first thing i mod out. it's a decision that's detracted from every fps i've ever seen it in.

I'm not worried at all. This is an RPG, not some action game or FPS.

Yeah I think that sums it up this isn't an action game auto targeting is fine in RPGs

A problem I can see happening is how it would work with enemies dodging me. I'd like to see enemies make an attempt to avoid my arrows and spells instead of just running around taking it all. If we have an auto-aim for that then it will seem too much to be the auto-aims fault if I miss. I'd like to be the one to anticipate where they will move and I don't like the idea of whether I hit or miss to hidden percentages which seems likely.

Nope.

Whatever mechanics they have in the game, I'll just get used to them.

I am not to worried about the new auto-targeting system. I am sure Bethesda will keep it along the lines of the ES series just better and more improved.

I just hope that enemies don't have the AC sort of auto aim. Since I just use companions and such as meat shields, it would kind of ruin it for me.
I hope that they're attacks can hit obstacles (Namely, people who are standing in the way) instead of me.

I actually want auto targeting, I was soo sick of hitting friendly people in oblivion then being punished in some way for my sword missing my enemy by an inch and killing a friendly right behind him. I dont want total auto aim but just enough to stop me missing like in cod (yes -.- i know) you can have aim assist that SLIGHTLY moves your cross hair in the direction the enemy is moving
