Anyone worried about the auto-targeting system?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 1:44 pm

Anyone enjoy just blocking with your shield and swinging with your sword? I enjoyed it a lot. So I'm worried about the Assassin's Creed targeting they have in the game. They mention they would have one similar to AC. I don't want any kind of help, for example if I swing my sword, and it auto hits a certain body type. I only want to hit what I'm aiming for. I hate the idea. They also said to have finishing moves which sounds really cool.

There is no auto-target in Skyrim. There is a "slight magnetism," which is very different. An obvious example of the slight magnetism was when the Dragonborn turns and slashes the dragon on it's side while it was flying by. It's only meant to make combat more engaging and intense, but not meant to take away or cripple the player experience. A lot of FPS games have a magnetism to a degree just to keep things fun and competitive.

They said slight magnetism, not lock on or reticule auto-aim.

"Slight" aiming magnetism in most games is usually a small change in the trajectory of a bullet/object so that it hits an close target. A handy tool implemented in console games that require aiming due to controller limitations.

I'm guessing it will slightly adjust your slash angle if you are close enough to a mob, since you can't directly control your weapon paths until we get advanced motion control :D

I don't remember them ever saying that... Slight magnetism is what they said. And no, I'm not worried. The old control/attack system was loose and messy. With a magnetism such as what they are suggesting it allows for much more variety in how you attack and how it all animates into a believable battle. And then also you get finishing moves too as you mention.

I think auto-targeting is a good feature, as long as it can be turned off. It will be helpful to players with bad aim (and I'm not one of them), but still want to play an archer or other ranged specialist.

I don't think that the "magnetism" would exactly being the same as auto-targeting. And I guess its inclusion had more to do with the supposedly more sophisticated animations than an intention to hand-holding the inept players and all that jazz.

Not worried. And I don't think PC *version* should be the factor, but rather the controller you play with. Or better yet, fully customizable. I can't help but imagine that aided hitting also results in dice rolls for success.

I have to admit that im a little worried. I know they wont make it like some cheap Call of Duty cheat that makes you turn 180 degrees at an enemy but im still worried that they make it too much.

If the combat svcks in the game, then the game itself will also svck if you ask me, so yes i'm worried :P.

I read something about having auto-aim in sword fights, but i really can't see how they would fit an assassins creed fighting style in a first person singleplayer game. I'm really clueless to what it'll turn out to be.

auto-aim in melee is whats being discussed here, im pretty sure there wont be any auto-aim for ranged combat on pc version of the game

If by "auto-targeting" means "I won't hit the stupid of my companion if he puts himself between me and my enemy", I'm very glad of it in fact. I'm definitely TIRED of idiotic/suicidal companion behaviour.

If it means otherwise...I'd be certainly worried. I hope at least it's optional.

I think this is a great idea, mainly because melee fighting in fps needs some streamlining to feel "real". If you are fighting in real life you instinctivley keep your opponent in view and movement and attack is combined so as to be one action. In a game movement and attack are separated and you do not instinctivley keep an oppnent in view. The game mechanics need to compensate to some degree for this. In my view the best way of compensating is a magnetism to attacks so that they will automatically hit as long as the enemy is within a specified range and does not make a dodging move. I would also like the game to designate a current target (without any visual cues or reticule targeting or anything like that) and smooth out your camera movement to help you keep the enemy in view. This to avoid the problem in oblivion were you would "lose" an enemy if they moved to the side in a close melee. The camera controls are not so instinctual as to make it easy to keep an enamy in focus when he circles you, which is bad.
So, to sum up, some autoaim for the weapons (lets say auto hit if in range and within a 100 degree arc in front of you) and some camera magnetism so as not to lose sight of the enemy you are fighting.

It's becoming amusing how people agree to every breaker Bethesda adds =D
I hope there's also some kind of indicator showing who you're targeting.Probably followed by "next target" and "closest target" buttons.Did I mention no friendly-fire?

If this could be modded out,I would.

so you think people who like the idea of magnetism are just nuthugging bethesda? because obviously if someone has a different opinion than yours it has to be because of some irrational reasons . . .

magnetism, as i imagine it, would allow for better fighting animations instead of a mundane swingfest

Yes I'm worreid, but that's not to say I can't see it working, somehow. But I persoanlly would prefer no targeted at all, atleast for the PC version. I've never had a problem hitting what Intended with a mouse, but if it's been a n issue with controllers, so go ahead and it to the consoles

Dear GOD!
I hope the 1:41 in the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik1qcYGTl-E&feature=fvsr is not an example of magnetism!!!!

That movement is suspiciously fluid :S I really hope we can turn it off if it's that heavy auto targeting

Personally I find it's more amusing how folks'll draw up these incredible conlusions with very little gameplay footage actually being shown. Heck, it's down right funneh.

I am and I think it's unnecessary. Most of the time I hit allies in Oblivion it wasn't because of a lack of an autoaim... I hit them because they just got in the way. And if you have to lead your shots with anything the autoaim (don't get technical please) will make it a lot harder.

Good point now.Perhaps instead of making magic blades that ignore your companion,it should be companions that look out for your blade.

you kind of have to picture how targeting would work with this unique engine, so i'm not worried.

What are you talking about? Aim your crosshair/middle of your screen at whatever you want to hit, be close enough to it, swing. It'd be disastrous if it ever went the route of MMOs and let you just select a target and hit number keys which would land attack whether they are in front of you or close enough or anything else related to ACTUALLY hitting stuff. -.-

its not that simple, with inclusion of finishing moves it may very well be that some level of auto-aim is necessary

whatever it is, I hope it's not like in the trailer, it's TOO powerful, I would never like THAT level of magnetism.
