Anyone worried about the auto-targeting system?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 8:11 am

Anyone enjoy just blocking with your shield and swinging with your sword? I enjoyed it a lot. So I'm worried about the Assassin's Creed targeting they have in the game. They mention they would have one similar to AC. I don't want any kind of help, for example if I swing my sword, and it auto hits a certain body type. I only want to hit what I'm aiming for. I hate the idea. They also said to have finishing moves which sounds really cool.

i'd doubt it will be that close to AC targeting. i think thats just what they related it to because its closest. you kind of have to picture how targeting would work with this unique engine, so i'm not worried. i'm actually excited because i like the idea of not hitting my friends in combat by accident all the time as i did in oblivion.

lol i remember one time in morrowind i pulled back my sword and went through a door. during the loading screen i let go, and when it was finished loading i just killed some poor fellow walking to probably buy some bread for his family or something

"Slight target magnetism" doesn't sound like Assassin's Creed targeting at all. It's just gonna help coordinate the fighting in bigger group battles instead of turning the fight into a huge friendly fire clusterf***. If it's applied right, meaning not to marksmanship, and isn't too strong, then it won't be a problem for me. But if not it could break the complete control of the combat system... Although as I'm writing this post I'm thinking it's probably necessary to have a target magnetism for the finishers to kick in properly...

I think if done properly, it makes the fighting more realistic. when you're really fighting someone you keep your focus on them. If they try to dodge your attack you character's natural reflexes would try to follow your opponent's movement instinctively. It all depends on how smooth they make it feel.

Of course this can be done terribly as well.

if its slight then i'm cool with that. i just didn't want something full on like AC. and i don't want to pause gameplay, place fireball here and boom thing.

If anything your weapon should be able to hit whatever is in its way.A two handed weapon's swing should be able to hit more than one thing, if you use a horizontal strike it shouldn't stop at the person infront of you but hit everyone in a 90 degree arc in front of you.

I'm not worried at all. This is an RPG, not some action game or FPS.

Am not worried about it. If anything the auto targeting might help getting use to some of the play style of the new combat system.

Personally, I hate auto-targeting and haven't played a game I liked it in. You say 'if it's done right' but I can't see how it can be 'done right' without taking away some of the open and free feel I love from TES games. I wouldn't mind too much if it was toggled and/or didn't target too much but this seems like it will just restrict things too much. I liked being able to whack my sword against anything I pleased.

Assassins Creed has completely auto-targeting. Pressing the attack makes your assassin attack to all directions around you, it surely can't be like that, especially in a first person game. The 3rd person view surely has similarities with the Skyrim 1st person, meaning that attacking forward is the only thing having any kind of auto-targeting. If we turn 180 degrees because of the auto targeting, THEN it is like AC. I sure hope the view in 1st person won't turn in combat, it would be too much auto-targeting. But if auto-targeting is added to an Oblivion type combat, it would mean that if you swing at an enemy and he is in range, in your view and miss him in OB, it wouldn't happen in Skyrim.

Edit: I'm not worried, even though I express my fears of what it could be at it's worst, but I highly doubt it will be that bad, if anything, the auto-targeting system will make combat more fast paced and brutal.

Imagine you just finished someone off, but another person in your peripheral vision is about to hit you hard. You tap your attack button, and you're character slightly changes direction and does a quick attack to stifle him. Even though you weren't facing him, and you couldn't face him in time using the old controls, you're character still knew to attack him. IMO it would feel way more real.

as long as it's a slight touch, it'll be fine.

nope, not at all. I fell that the slight auto will take away some of the unnecessary frustration of stupid NPC getting in your way so that all you can do is wait for him to die or to kill what is yours....as long as it is "slight."

I don't think that's how it is. They said they designed the magnetism for large fights so that if you have a lot of people together, enemies and comrades, then it would *slightyly* adjust the angle of the strike to hit the enemy only and leave your comrade unharmed. I don't think it will change your camera angle at all.

hm, well i was just trying to imagine something that works, and wouldn't be too much like typical auto targeting, but what you said sounds even better.

Yes, I'm worried until I see it in action. "Slight" is not a very precise description, I want to see myself how it works, but until then... I can only relate to other games who have a "not so slight" auto aim which svcks badly.

I hope there's an option to turn it off myself. I don't want auto-aim in this kind of game, at least. I suppose I can understand why you might want it in a console game as console controllers aren't that suited for precise aiming, but when it comes to PC first person games where aiming is manual, if I miss, I miss, I don't want the game to help me. If you're going to do that, you might as well just make it a point and click game, that way, you render the issue irrelevant because hitting or missing has nothing to do with where you aim anyway, but I wouldn't want that in the Elder Scrolls, because the first person perspective and control scheme has always been something that makes the series different from many of its competitors, I wouldn't want to do away with that. Admitably, we've been told it's "slight" auto-aim, whatever that means, but I'd rather no auto-aim. If there's no option to remove it, I think I'll download a no auto-aim mod when one is released.

I think that the system is less of an "auto aim" and more of a "auto miss".

I.E. If you are swinging at an enemy and a friendly NPC runs in front of you, the "auto targetting" will cause your swing angle to adjust away from the friendly NPC.

I hope it's a good as it was in red dead redemption!

Doing this in the game was so funny, I had to buy the collector kit to relish the memories..

As long as I can still hit multiple opponents all at once that surround me I'm not to bothered. And I hope that it's easy to pull out of if you want to run or find another target. I don't want to be almost yanking my xbox controller joysticks off trying to get out of the magnetic pull o.O

as Archer stated, I'd like to hit multiple enemies, in all previous games you could only hit one npc with your weapon, thats it. despite the innumerable NPC's around and infront of you, when you swing only one character gets hit.

Im pretty sure we'll be able to turn it off.... I hope. and I really hope combat ai isnt as stupid as it has been in previous games where gaurds for example would basically form a train hitting you in succession and each other.

Not worried at all. What does worry me is that casting ranged magic will be as pointless as it was in OB where if you don't do it point blank anyway everything just takes a small side step and you just wasted time and Magicka.

You mean that I'm worried that I'll be actually able to hit things? Not at all.

I just played the Kvatch part in Oblivion where you're given some help in the form of 3 soldiers.
Oh my god. I could hardly do anything, I couldn't even hit anybody without hurting my companions even with a sword.

After this, yes, I'll accept any amount of magnetism Skyrim will have.

They mention they would have one similar to AC. Never played it; I know of the "magnetic" feature of combat in Skyrim I don't want any kind of help,In mass melee, I need all the help I can get. I always ended up hitting friendlies, which, made them not too friendly :whoops: for example if I swing my sword, and it auto hits a certain body type. I only want to hit what I'm aiming for. I only want to hit what I'm aiming for as well! You know...the baddies ;)s I hate the idea. I like the idea They also said to have finishing moves which sounds really cool. ...which sounds really bad

Seems we're on opposite poles :)

The only way I didn't hit friendlies in combat was to not participate, so having an aid willl help.
