Anyone worried that Skyrim will be Fallout with Magic?

Post » Sun Dec 05, 2010 6:49 am

Well, I'll say games look way better now than they did when both consoles first released. So, I can only hope it will continue to follow that trend. And I mean, eventually we really are going to hit a wall where people will be going more stylistic because there will be no more room for graphical improvement. Though I don't see that happening for another generation or two.

I remember when Nintendo was a actual contender... :ermm:

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple jump into the console market. They are already trying, and have a very good share of the mobile game market.

I know that, but I'm doubting there's really much more they can do with the current generation.

You're referring to that ancient dinosaur known as the Nintendo 64, right? :P

How do you know Apple is trying? Do you think they're designing something behind closed doors right about now?

I can't say I'm too worried about this, no. There's more than just perks and a post apocalyptic setting seperating Fallout from the Elder Scrolls. And while Skyrim might have adopted the former, there's still a lot it would have to do before becoming "Fallout with Magic". Besides, I feel that there are some aspects of the Fallout series that would work well in the Elder Scrolls too, so I actually don't mind that Bethesda seems to be taking some ideas from Fallout, as long as, in doing so, they don't end up sacrificing something that defines the Elder Scrolls or bringing in some aspect of past Fallout games I don't think would be good for the Elder Scrolls.

But since you're talking specifically about replay value, then I don't think Fallout lacks replay value, in any case, replay value, in a game like the Elder Scrolls, comes primarily from allowing players to make each playthrough a unique experience, and ensuring that each new experience is worthwhile. And nothing I've heard about Skyrim leads me to think we'll lose that. In fact, at least the new "Radiant Story" thing I could see enhancing replay value, if it's done well. Since it should theoretically ensure that the gameplay experience will be different depending on how you choose to play your character, of course, if handled poorly, it could cause its own share of problems, so we'll see how it works out.

They've both committed to mediocrity, and are holding back the game market so they can squeeze more cash out of the current consoles, instead of competing to make newer and better consoles... Should be illegal, but what are you going to do

It seems to be working pretty well for them, so of course they'll keep doing it until the time comes where it's just time to develop new consoles, and as long as another company doesn't make something more advanced, there's nothing game developers can do about it. It's either release the game for one or both consoles, or don't release the game for either console.

I really don't think "simple" should be taken as an insult, really not. If something is simple it can still lead to challenging depth. It's just more accessible. Yes, that's the word.

My fear is that it will simply be Oblivion with magic.

I was. The Nintendo 64 is still a baller :P

I said they were holding a good portion of the mobile gaming market. With that being such a success I was saying I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped into the home console market. I doubt they are currently developing anything along those lines right now though.

If the best features of Fallout make their way into Skyrim I don't see why we should complain.

Yeah. I mean, I haven't played Fallout : apparently, that new Skyrim stealth system (you know, where NPC have an "alert" stage when you can drop back in the shadows if you're quick enough) comes from it. What am I gonna say ? No please, psychic NPCs are so much more TES ?

*sigh* No it won`t be Fallout with Magic. Skyrim will be Skyrim - a game that won`t be like Oblivion or Morrowind either.

Which is actually a good thing as TES needs to evolve more for the future.

It will be a hybrid of Oblivion and Fallout 3 with dragons thrown in for extra generic-ness.

Sometimes change is bad.
(new isn't always a good thing simply for being new)

**Quick poll (for everyone): What would you rather have? Daggerfall with Oblivion's Graphics, or Oblivion with Oblivion's graphics?
(Granted that Daggerfall sound & UI could be further improved, but for sake of argument... lets ignore that.)

***Edit: Let me rephrase that; How about and/or this [alternatively]...
What would you rather have? Daggerfall or Oblivion, both with Morrowind's graphics & sound?

I'll just take Morrowind. I'm not fond of randomly generated lands. If I was forced to choose though, Oblivion. Hands down.

Edit* also... Old isn't always good just because it was previously the norm.

This is very true, just look at Coca~Cola

**Seriously though, it is true, but [like you said] not always... Sometimes what was the norm  was better.

Now... Just for kicks, watch this clip, and imagine a state of the art random level generator (which this isn't, but just imagine it with Oblivion's(or Skyrim's) graphics).

Wait... wait... How about this instead, which is pretty state of the art...

I agree with that. And that's why I'm saying we can't judge something until we've tasted it. To touch on that Coca-Cola reference. We won't *really* know if Skyrim is good until we've played it. And then it's still relative to each of our own opinions

Agreed... but I have a nagging notion. I guess that I'm cynical; (enough to mention that coke changed to use corn syrup instead of sugar, so it was a fair guess that it would not taste as good )

I expect Skyrim to have mind boggling visuals and atmosphere; and I expect (not long into it) to start noticing things that should be there, but are not.
(and perhaps things that are, but shouldn't be)

Some concepts from the Fallout series at really well done. Nobody can deny that both series work on an extremely similar formula. I don't mind the direction that Bethesda have taken with this ne Levelling System, even though I was sceptical at first.

Both series will still be very unique in style, and gameplay, but some things will cross. Most FPS's have extremely similar mechanics, however it's the style and content that make some stand out from others. The way those mechanics are applied an be different too.

In honesty I'm not worried. They appear to be taking good ideas and adjustingthem to fit in well.

I personally Loved Fallout , I didn't like much Instead NV , it was boring , boring quests , repetitive stuff and the environment lacked any WOW areas or unique places that made the game stand out , the overall feel was of playing a well done mod... with lots of bugs ... the only good features there that I appreciated where the companion orders hud and the hardcoe mode of survival altough it is made quite simplicistically , where instead I would have liked something more realistic ... Apart that about Skyrim to be similar to fallout , I don't worry much but it is actually a fact that Bethesda with their games are sort of going down the hill by simplifiying thins I didn't like the idea of Beth to remove classes for example , classes are by always a RPG standard thing , it helps also imersion and you to define your gamestyle ... removing just makes you the all out buff hero that can do all .... Instead I preferred do it more separated careers so to replay the game more and more times like Mage , and have the relative path , like Thief with relative path and as Warrior with relative path , possibly with all different endings etc.... Tough from all I am seeing apart the class removal , the extreme simplification of armours and clothing that went from a cool piecemental system to a boring one suit only armour....and the world of the same size of Oblivion I am liking all ....

I am a bit disappointed tough that the world size is comparable to Oblivion , I always felt this was sort of a fishtank where I barely had the space to move ... Come on 6x6 kms area is just too small .... Crysis 1 map was like 16 x 16 kms I myself did a supersized map of 9 times the size for Oblivion and a 8x8 kms island in a Crysis mod like work I am doing ....

When have you not been able to do that in Elder Scrolls? That's what sets it apart from other RPG's. Sure, I picked the mage class (example, I never use pre-made classes) Nothing stops me from wearing heavy armor and eventually becoming a master of that. Unlike other RPG's that say. "No. Only X class can do Y!!!"
As for defining your game style, you really don't need a menu and a statsheet to tell you that. In Elder Scrolls you define your game style. Not the game. That's how it's alway been since Daggerfall.

And you can still do that. If not more so now, because perks and radiant story will make every character unique.
One suit armor works for Fallout. That's in Fallout. That's not going to be in Elder Scrolls. Pete confirmed that on his twitter. (give me a sec to find and I'll put in a edit)
The world size being the same as Oblivion is bad? No. Morrowind and Fallout 3 were smaller than Oblivion. Both felt HUGE. It depends on how they create the world, your character speed, the terrain, etc.

Crysis was also a FPS. Not a open world RPG full of quests, NPC's with intelligent A.I. That had schedules and so on.

Edit* here is the http://twitter.com/DCDeacon/status/24587565612933120 I was referring too. It's not going to be a "one suit"

I don't care.

If the game is fun then that's all that matters to me, if Bethesda chooses to go in a completely different direction, no problem, as long as the game is fun to play.

I'm just worried about magic being linear, if spell making is truly gone. I need custom spells.

If they find a way to make merging spells work, you will basically be able to do "custom" spells on the fly. :D

Crysis yes was an FPS but the AI of the enemies where extremely welldone , some of the best around plus the amount of details everywhere is unbelieavable .... anyway AI shoudlnt have impact or direct graphics as are limited to an around the NPC scan eventually and work locally shouldn't have anything to do with the world size....

As for the size I complain couse I wanted amazing landscape views not fogged out views due to limited size of the space...

about the class systems I do not feel constrained if I am alowed to do everything I want I will do use magic thievery etc ... I think still was best to allow a mixed class among also other speicific classes so to specialize in more and get may be some specializations this is what made me anyway replay Mrrowind but not much Oblivion ....

Not if were limited to a few effects. I make some pretty unique spells and like to name them. I'm afraid that it might be gone. It was essential to a third of my game-play styles.

To be perfectly honest I've never played Crysis. So, I don't know it exactly. But I'll bet it doesn't have a ton of dialogue, which takes up disc space. It took up half the disc space for Oblivion as a matter of fact. So, really the A.I. And amount of NPC's does effect the size of the world. There is only so much space on one disc. That being said, I'm perfectly fine with them making me have a second "install" disc for my x-box 360. Damn Microsoft not jumping on the Blu-Ray band wagon... <_<

Edit* @Xarnac I didn't mean like Fire + Ice = boiling water spell. I just meant the same thing as if you made a fire damage + frost damage spell in past games. Of course there problem is with that, since offensive spells do more than just damage now. Conundrum!
